I'm playing AoS right now on a whim, IDK what I'll do next. I just beat Bloodstained but I feel like I have more to do in that game. A recent thread made me want to go back to the 3D games because "dude they're totally better than you remember" but /v/ has gotten me with that before. Then again what's the worst that could happen? I can think of worse things than playing mediocre spooky games in October.

Recently beat the patched Dawn of Sorrow with all the QoL shit and bugfixes (haha luck). It came with the auto-glyph patch, which was something I didn't really plan for but I didn't miss having to draw them in myself, so eh.
Replaying it, I still enjoy the combat and most of the mechanics, but I forgot just how "Metroidvania" it really was, it seemed like every time you get a new traversal skill, you'd unlock one new path to progress and like 5 optional rooms, and the mandatory path would often be crammed into some tiny corner somewhere, so you'd always have to go scanning every tile of the map to try to find the place you're supposed to go.
Also the weapon/equipment balance was pretty fucked, half the weapons are useless, and you get one of the best armors in the game like halfway through the game.
I plan on playing SOTN next, I think.

Be warned, the "4 is easy" meme only applies to the early stages. In the later stages it gets genuinely challenging. If you want an easy Cv with save files, stage select and general QoL then you can't go wrong with Rondo. Just don't play as Maria because it makes the game far too easy.

I think LoS' biggest mistake was divorcing their version of Dracula from Vlad the Impaler and the novel. Those would've been great stories to tell, oh, and an Alucard game since the DLC was cool.

>Vlad the Impaler and the novel
Doubt it. While Stoker borrowed the name Dracula, he adapted only fragments of the historical figure’s backstory. For example, some passages suggest a connection to Vlad III’s exploits, but they leave unclear whether Dracula is Vlad himself, merely a British royal families descendent or symbolic representation. Only readers interpretation.

1999/Demon Castle War
Julius for the Belmont mode, playable from the start, full power move set
Alucard for Iga-like mode, gradual leveling/power gain
Third mode is Dual mode, maybe the extra two figures in GoS - it would be interesting to have a mix n match system between the PoR pairs.
Fourth mode allows you to switch Julius and Alucard's modes (start with weak Julius/strong Alucard for example)

CotM isn't that clunky, right-left and left-right also work for running, you don't need to double-tap the same button every time. The level layouts are also spaced out more than usual, in order to accomodate for the controls. Also, you largely shouldn't worry about the card combos mechanic on the first playthrough, and there's no reason to grind the cards since beating the game unlocks an extra game mode with all the cards already unlocked. It's broken in the most fun way.

Yeah, OoE is a weird experiment of a game. Some of it works, but most of it really doesn't. The hybrid-ish level design is truly awful and in a way it feels like you're getting the worst of both worlds. Most of the bosses are excellent, but then a few of them are just terrible.
I will say that it's a beatiful-looking game, and even though it's not a story-heavy game by any means, it has the best story in the series by a wide margin.

You haven't played Belmont's Revenge. It takes a lot of cues from Mega Man, in a good way. The level design is super creative and memorable - I haven't played the game in years and I can instantly recall several of its level design set pieces. Like, there's a part where you get to the spike crusher traps from Cv1, except you finally get the satisfaction of breaking those fuckers with your whip. Awesome stuff.

I'm with you. I haven't played it or Lecarde Chronicles but many of the sprites are poorly drawn with awkward animation. The relationship between the foreground and background also looks off sometimes. I will grant that the game has a nice sense of color, though. It commits in a way that's genuinely atmospheric.
I wouldn't mind giving it a go, but I don't want to spend $20 on it. I'll try the demo at some point.
Reminder that it's fine if you don't like Classicvania, but if you shit on them for the controls then you're just revealing yourself to be a filthy casual who got filtered.

And the rope skeleton enemies, and the conveyor ropes, and when they switch directions, and when you have to shimmy down the long rope to avoid the fuckhueg spike wall. BR alone did so many cool things with ropes and there's so much more potential in the mechanic. Stairs' only function is that that they gimp your movement against medusas and projectiles, that's about it.

Look to Elden Ring or Silksong to see examples of games demanding positional awareness while actively engaging the player.

I have almost all the equipment now, except for the ring slot where there's still a good half dozen missing. No idea how I could miss them, I have near perfect map completion and 92% bestiary but there's only 1 ring I can farm from enemies.

I doubt it, to act like positioning is irrelevant in Sekiro betrays you bad. These games boil down to reading the opponent then judging opportunity cost and action economy. Soulsfights are games of inches and spacing is just one skill to be mastered in Sekiro, while it's all classicvania's boil down to.

I like Sekiro, I think Genichiro is still one of the eastiest bosses in the entire game and the Wrathful Demon or the Rematch bosses are the hardest but at the end of the day the main method of play is the same, if you master the parry it's your get out of jail free card while also hurting the boss every time, there's not much else besides some simon says prompts that you have to deal with. The fact that you could get into Sekiro but got filtered by Classicvania is extremely telling, Classicvania tests you on your basic movement options and reading telegraphed attacks far more than any Sekiro boss or most modern games that use a similar parry system.
This isn't even considering subweapons which in Classicvania are almost essential to survive and complement your basic kit to Sekiro where they just trivialize the game entirely and allow you to ignore certain mechanics

The Owl fights revolve around it for example, Ishiin's phase 2/3 its crucial, you can bait several different attacks with slight differences in spacing. I'm not sure I'd rather play the N64 games, but at least those feel a little inspired. Lament of Innocence is a chore. Unless you're extremely attached to the soundtrack and the Gothic atmosphere (the former is great and the latter is letdown by some crummy character models) the game has nothing going for it. Curse of Darkness irritates me even more for various reasons.

They don't have janky controls, you simply suck at them. C64 doesn't have the same kind of responsive controls or dynamic enemy placement that Classicvania has either but it's worth noting that C64's controls were actually AHEAD of their time with the ajustable camera controls
>>723758303
Because they aren't janky. They're limited in places, but they're responsive and do exactly what they're intended to do and add to the game, working in concert with the level design and enemy behaviors. Rondo of Blood would not be half as good if Richter moved like he does in SotN.

I think there's valid criticisms to lobby against it, its being unfaithful to Rondo being one of them, given how it was presented. I personally see it as more of an extension of Castlevania 3-style level designs and I enjoyed it greatly for it. It's also some good ZSNEScore from back in the day that I may have a certain fondness for on that merit.

Making a game easy allows the player to choose a variety of playstyles. The more difficult a game the more forced a player is to 'play the correct way'.
Then you get copycat games that only have this one way to play without any options and wonder why everyone thinks they are shit.

This is just the most cancerous shit. It actually explains nearly the entire normalfag psychological makeup. The reason for the overabundance of irony is because as is well-known here, normalfags operate on a mentality driven by consensus and social status, not on whether or not X proposition is true. Irony is therefore the safest behavior for them because operating on a logic-based worldview runs the risk that somebody might not like their opinion, so they use irony to avoid having to genuinely hold opinions. But if you can't genuinely hold an opinion that says this or that is good or bad, you can't distinguish worthless slop from good content. That's why every community normalfags infest becomes shit - because of irony. Death to irony.

Man, I don't know. I think a magazine said he died under mysterious circumstances, too.
Would be nice to get some answers on that. When this timeline came out I pictured Gerhart as living to adulthood but dying on the job due to some monster. I don't see Soleil being a murderer.
A pre-release IGN article named Reinhardt Schneider's father as "Gelhart", which sounds like a translation of "Gerhart". Reinhardt was supposed to have the Belmont surname at one point in 64's development. I could maybe see Gerhart as a Belmont who came in the 19th century and died because of the family's skills burning out.
But he's clearly a son of Christopher in this family tree, and Reinhardt's dad is named Michael in official sources... which is also a Belmont's name in the Bloodlines fax. The mysteries just keep piling up.

Reinhart was supposed to be Michael Belmont, the guy who leads Eric to the Alucard spear IIRC.
And Michael’s father was Gerhart.
But that would make Gerhart several hundred years old at the time of Michael/Reinhart’s birth.
Which I guess could be possible if he were a vampire.

He didnt halt it, he severly damaged it and scathered it (OoE) and screw the family out of the whip for centuries (Bloodlines, PoR).
Youd know this if you actually PLAYED THE GAMES.

Nah let it rest, I dont want CV threads to end like Silksong or Deltarune threads, the reason the threads are good (besides the fact that the usual suspects are not here) is that they are infrequent, and so it lets people to come up with thoughts to share.

They never put the blame on Richter or explain why the Belmonts couldn’t wield the whip until 1999.

PoR explicitly states that Richter was the last Belmont to be able to use the whip

This, I remember the resident schizos that popped up back in 2020. It wasn't a fun time.

yes, that doesn't mean that richter is at fault for that. it was said that they were saving up Big Belmont Energy for the big fight, you just invented your own headcanon
