I played through Z-A for several days and really enjoyed myself and it's a really good game for a Pokemon game. Have to be specific and note its a good Pokemon game because trying to compare Pokemon to other games is just dishonest cause i don't play Pokemon for competitive battling or tacticool gameplay/graphics i play cause i want to collect every Pokemon which is very fun to me. I finished the Pokedex and was satisfied. Maybe if Pokemon breeding isn't ruined in gen 10 i'll go back to breeding Pokemon for hours on end but SV destroyed breeding for me and i haven't touched it breeding in that game because of it.

With Fairy types being added it has changed a bit. Fairy types got introduced in gen 6 with X and Y but the game does have symbols to tell you whats super effective against what and what doesn't work on what during combat on your moves. After playing Z-A i realized i have nearly no memory of playing pokemon X and still enjoyed it. You really don't have to have knowledge of anything if you're not into it and if you care that much you can just open up a wiki and browse through it for a while.

At least i'm not like the OP i wouldn't ever call this the best Pokemon game of all time but it's definitely up there but it's dragged down by it being only one town and Legends of Arceus being a much more open game in comparison. New combat is cool but clearly this is the first time they tried it and it shows. The way i see it in Z-A while i do have to follow their guided main quest i do have a lot of moments to stop and ignore it while wandering around basically the whole town outside of some roofs i don't get access to. I can just wander around and catch Pokemon on those roofs and ignore the main quest until i feel like doing it or i have to if i want access to another part of town or other Pokemon.

It's just how i remember feeling about the games when i first played them. I've replayed gen 1 and gen 2 recently and i still replay Crystal from time to time cause i enjoy it the most. Gen 4 5 and 6 i haven't played in a while but i did play a bit of Emerald a few years ago. Gen 7 8 and 9 are pretty fresh in my mind still.

I'd say in terms of being guided S/M>Z-A>Legends of Arceus if i was comparing those 3 games. Z-A has handholding but the handholding is mainly just wanting you to finish the main story but you do have time to goof off between missions but until you get to certain milestones you can't mega evolve or you can't catch certain Pokemon and i didn't even get the Metal Coat until very late in the game at side mission 101 which is a while since there are 118 side missions. You have freedom to roam and wander but until you actually get the story moving you do get stuck on how much access you truly have.

This would be a lot higher on my list if wild zones weren’t complete dogshit

From the start, the city is a questionable setting and it doesn't try to justify it. Graphics aside, the city is visually bland, having the same aesthetic throughout the city that makes it difficult to know where you are without checking the map. The wild zones are a strange compromise to include wild pokemon that is confusing since all it means is they're putting aggressive wild pokemon in the city, which NPCs understandably complain about. They kind of try to make the company responsible for this look shady, but nothing actually comes of it.
The battle system is okay, I like how smoothly it transitions in and out of battle, but the system itself is just spamming cool downs and is a bit clunky with how your pokemon have to reposition themselves constantly depending on the moves you use. The movement of that wastes a lot of time that the opponent doesn't have to deal with, especially for pokemon that move slower. The lock on is kind of shit too, pain in the ass trying to lock on to the actual pokemon you're fighting in a group or when there's mega shards around.
As alluded to earlier, despite heaping tons of dialog on you, the story is really very terrible. Nothing goes anywhere. I was interested in learning about AZ but they pretty much just reiterate what was said in XY and then is permanently removed.
The pokemon selection itself is not very wide and the distribution is nor ideal, kept seeing people ask where they can find a pokemon and a lot of them would be late game. I would be more okay with it if you could mount the pokemon, but you can't, there's actually no mount or bike at all in this one
The new megas mostly range from bad to just ok

Ok, let me be a counterpoint, then.

I love the verticality of the construction jungle gyms and the rooftops.
I think the real time battle system isn't as precise, but banks on you panicking a bit when things get tough.
I think the catching system from PLA is still a lot of fun.
I think the monsters they picked were great and give you good team options without flooding you with too much of the same.
I think finding rare or high level Pokemon when youre exploring normal places is fun, like Swirlix hanging out at food stalls or Pansage chilling on a light pole, or having to sneak up on the Abras on the rooftops.
I think the game does a great job at making little mini bosses via level design and certain monster spawns.
I think the game does a way better job than X and Y in getting you to engage with Mega Evolution as a mechanic.
I think, despite the fugly graphics, the actual layout and design of Lumiose is great.

Like, seriously, make almost every Hau interaction into Hau being at the location and having optional dialogue. Boom, a third of the cutscenes are gone. Make tutorials opt out. Bam, there goes another third. Remove roadblocks and replace them with progression flags. Game's fun now.

The low budget cutscenes for a lot of games are just creating emote animations for all the characters, loading the characters on the map, and then setting off a series of flags to have them do that in sequence. Sun/Moon was weird because instead of calling the same Lillie model for each cutscene, the game stored a model for Lillie for each cutscenes on the map. Weird stuff you only really see during crunch when some core function has an issue and they don't know what to do to fix it.

The game is only getting this hated on because there weren't enough indisputably awful releases out this year. Pokémon seemed like an easy target, and while the game's nowhere near that bad on the whole it has enough easy bullet points to punch at that it became a shallow target. Not that far into it yet, but thus far I'd agree with you. I can understand the game being more centric on the trainer battles, and they did a good job with the combat system. Still, they have the loose foundation to have done more with the wild zones. Would have loved to see them go more all-out with the areas instead of generally being awkward chunks of the main city. Only excuse I can really get is the game stating these areas were added somewhat haphazardly, but that does feel like a developer explanation for a half-assed idea. It's an extra shame since the core mechanics behind these areas are a solid foundation.

For what it's worth, it's not like PLA had the most interesting world to explore despite being almost entirely based around wild captures. I had fun exploring it, but it did feel more about the overall experience than the actual environment a lot of the time.

I mean, that snippet more or less describes the game. The weakest element of the game is the lack of visual variety due to taking place in just Lumiose on top of the unpolished textures and models all over the place in general. But the core gameplay experience and writing are still enjoyable. I understand that the game is going to draw ire because Pokemon is the most profitable media franchise in the world, so you'd think this would equate to more effort in the visuals department, but people are acting like this aspect alone makes the entire game unworthy of your time. And that's just not the case. If you can get past the outdated and drab visuals, there's something fun here. Is it perfect? No. Is it good? Yes, it definitely is. It is a good game held back by The Pokemon Company's/Nintendo's refusal to levy more finances into Game Freak because they know people will buy the games regardless of how much they spend making them. The first Pokémon game that I played was Crystal. There's no other Pokémon games with the same level scaling issue as GSC/HGSS, at least not in the same scale. From the half point of the game, all Gym Leaders are around 10 levels below their RBY equivalent. The postgame content doesn't even try to scale with the player's level and everything is underleveled including the wild Pokémon. The singular postgame area in RBY/FRLG (Cerulean Cave) is waaaaay fucking stronger than anything than anything you can find on the Johto games, even the new Cerulean Cave from HGSS got low level wild mons for some reason. It honestly weirded me out spending 70 hours playing Crystal and then going to Yellow and everything scales way stronger.
