I was thinking about how the City people basically faught to guarantee their own deaths. The only people that benefited from Origin being released were the Kevesi and Agnians. The City people just ceased to exist after they won.
The story could have played with this idea, but they completely left it out. If Shania's betrayal was to stop Oroboros to save the City from being wiped out after Origin was reactivated, she would have been a much more interesting character.

I don’t see how that’s a negative. It fits the setting and works well within the context of the narrative. You’d have a point if the decision felt arbitrary/forced within the story, but I think 3 does more than enough legwork to justify it.

If anything, Xenoblade 3 is one of the few games where it makes complete sense for the world-saving band of heroes to be comprised of teens.

Besides, it’s not like this is the new standard. Future Redeemed went right back to the series standard having a party consisting of a multi-generational cast.

Youth has been the Blade series’ narrative shorthand for progress since the first game. Zeke even directly acknowledges this fact at the end of 2. It makes complete sense for a game about stagnation within a series with such a shorthand to utilize it at its logical extreme (trapping youth [progress] in an eternal death spiral and exploring how they endure/escape it).

A big part of why they're boring is because they all have the exact same backstory. They're all child soldiers who lost someone close to them (Noah lost Crys, Mio and Sena lost Miyabi, Lanz lost Joran, Taion lost Nimue, etc you get the idea)
It's hard for all of the characters to be interesting when they share too many similarities like that.

They come from similar backgrounds, sure, but the way they process their grief is what makes them unique. At least for me, seeing how people of such similar upbringing can find their own identity was one of the most interesting and poignant parts of the game’s story. I struggle with self-actualization a lot and found Sena to be the most personally relatable.

To address your point earlier about the party being “un-Xeno” again, I think the series has always been about finding commonality between people. While prior games focused on people of extremely varied backgrounds working towards a goal, I really admire how 3 illustrated how people with so much binding them can still find ways to hate one another. It’s a neat expansion on some of the ideas that has been initially presented in X (which 3 was clearly derived from).

I think a big problem with the game’s story is that a lot of character development was relegated to quests/side stories. I think the writers were trying to fix the issues X had with its narrative/quest balance but didn’t quite get all the way there.

On my initial playthrough I mostly just blitzed through the main story and was left pretty unsatisfied for reasons you’ve already stated. It really wasn’t until I sat down and played it cover to cover (and all the side content) that the game and characters grew on me.

I remember Lanz’s side story and Segiri’s hero quests being particular standouts for me. While I do agree that there could have been more done within the main story to tie the party together, I think the heavy lifting in other areas of the game really elevates the whole thing.

Xenoblade games seem to waver pretty heavily with party interactions. Overall I still think 1 is the worst about character dynamics and synergy, but each one has their fair share of missed opportunities.

You're assuming that scene is chronologically what happens after FR, but it makes more sense if that's what happens right at the start of XC3.
Aionios is clearly complete throughout the entirety of FR, so it doesn't make sense for it to come into existence after Origin crashes into the planet.
The after credit scene of the prequel setting up the beginning of the main game makes a lot more sense in this case.

She wanted to be like her dad sister because that's what her mom wanted. Her dad was literally the only one to want her to find her own way. The characters are written very maturely

X had promise and room to grow back in 2014, 3 was always the hype and momentum of two other much better stories falling flat. XDE is also the result of 3’s rash creative decisions, so everything that can reasonably be disliked about the new content can effectively also be blamed on 3, the great series unifier that is somehow the most divisive entry.

The game was done for months before then. Nintendo tends to sit on games for a while before releasing them. Moving the game up a few weeks changed basically nothing.
