the level design feels like it was designed around memorizing it for speedruns
just playing through the level normally feels awkward and you're constantly being stopped by every single piece of terrain; it doesn't flow very well unless, like previously stated, you have the layout memorized and can fly through everything

I only got through like 5 levels before dropping it

Did we play the same game? Levels are so smooth that they pratically play themselves. You can finish Wasteyard or Pig City with your eyes closed. There are some of them with annoying interruptions, mostly the ones in Vigilante's floor and Oh Shit! but if you only got through 5 you shouldn't have found any of them.

i think my dislike for the gameplay is mainly because of how Peppino moves and how the level design is built around that.

Idk if it's a hot take, but the way you move feels super restrictive

there are so many movements that feel sluggish to combo or take too much control away from the player

like for example, the piledriver move used to let you move horizontally while falling to adjust where you landed, which made it very dynamic and fun to combo. But in the final version of the game it just throws you straight down and locks you out of moving until it's done, which is super lame.

A ton of other moves and mechanics suffer from this, like yeah i'm MOVING fast, but the gameplay is not responsive enough to feel agile.

I do not know about the piledriver, but I know for a fact that the body slam can be controlled left-right if you press down and a direction at the same time (you can even bind a macro for it). Makes traversing downward far more fluid.

I loved it. Got all P-ranks and Quick as Hell/Holy Shit with Peppino, then did it again after the Noise update. My only disappointment was that the 2-player mode wasn't really true co-op.

Found it really fun, levels are smooth and you dont have to memorize the levels if you dont care about the Penis rank. The Noise update was pretty cool too, found many of the changes funny.
Anonymous No.723754083 [Report]
The speedrun like design is because of how much momentum the movement has, which makes it flow very well when you know what you're doing. But when you don't know what you're doing the high speed you can get and how much momentum jumps have and such don't make it less confusing if you're already confused.

I think it's a very high quality game, but I can understand why it frustrates some people and I definitely think it shouldn't be anyone's first platformer.

Yeah I feel like speedrun games work best if the levels are open/have multiple paths, I think that's why 2d sonic is fun the first time you play them
Anonymous No.723756140 [Report]
i would suggest you fucking niggers in the thread to play alpha beta pre release builds of the game. The movement and level design are at their peak in the final product, at least considering from mods that actually tend to lean toward mentioned above "designing for speedrunning" shtick and multiple laps and etc. at least that what i've seen.

Levels are designed well enough to get them first/second time if you understood the main gimmick.
Anonymous No.723756348 [Report]
>>723751065 (OP)
I think my favorite part of the game is that the levels were designed with just enough leeway to let you recover from mistakes. It took a really big fuck-up to ruin a P attempt to the point that a well-timed taunt couldn't get it back on track. Most games with a speedrunning slant demand you follow a script.

It was a lot of fun. The music was great, the boss fights are fun, I love the artstyle and the final boss really nails that "shit has hit the fan" climax you love to see in a game. Pepino as a character hits that same kind of thing Doomguy has going on that I really like. Normal dude motivated by so much stress and fear against overwhelming forces and dire circumstances, the pressure weighing so heavy that all those emotions are condensed into a blinding white-hot rage of pure performance. The enemies reflect this well when they shit themselves seeing you max charge them and later when Pepino just straight beats the living shit out of the bosses as the music swells.

It's one of my favorite character types and I'll always hate nu-doom for spitting on this by making you the big scary chozen one of legend by default.

Pizza Tower is one of the few games to really have a good read on how the player feels and reacts to what is happening in the game. The animations, music and sound effects all work together and it is damn near perfect.

When you first enter a Lap 2, you are greeted with a loud siren and sheer confusion. You quickly figure out what is happening but then it dawns on you - the countdown didn't reset. Cue a frantic race to the finish.

The Death I Deserveoli perfectly caputues the progression:

>What the fuck is happening
>Oh shit, better get a move on
>There is no way I'm gonna make it
>...I'm gonna make it...
>I'm gonna make it
>OUT OF THE WAY, FUCKERS YOU CAN'T STOP ME NOW
>Oh shit, this is gonna be close
>I'M NOT GONNA MAKE IT

10 out if 10. It hits every time.

unironically the best game ive seen for reactions is pic related, once you have played it a lot and can just freestyle the hardest levels

i usually score 250-330ms for unpredictable choice reaction for almost all sorts of games, but when i measured it, this game constantly has me scoring 160-230ms choice reactions against shit i have literally never even imagined before it showed up on my screen. almost every avid action game player i measured seems to react much faster than usual for this once theyre fully used to the full moveset

I think it's kind of the other way around. It's Pizza Time is that looming anxiety creeping in further and further, then you hit a Lap 2 and Deservioli comes in maintaining that high-tension but it's a controlled chaos. The player chose this and they're styling on the stage by doing it again.

just tried the demo, it's very charming especially visually but I think it needs more time in the oven
>ground combo is slow and clunky despite doing the same damage as the air combo which you can spam as fast as you can press the button
>focus on meticulously breaking every background object to get good rankings can slow the game to a crawl, especially when the background objects blend in with the background
>on that note if it's not gross/dirty I shouldn't be penalized for not "cleaning" it
>if they want me to clean stuff random background objects shouldn't require more than one hit, I'm given all these moves to attack while moving but I can only effectively clean most objects by stopping
>I don't mind a heavier combat focus since that's different from what PT/Antonblast are doing but basic enemies are just a little too tanky
but it's worth remembering that Pizza Tower's demos ranged from pretty alright to total shit and the final game turned out great so I'm sure the devs could still make a good game here

It's a great game, well designed with how it's fun to play through casually and becomes even better when you get a grasp on the controls and get P ranks

I think the one problem I can say with it is how long it takes to get used to the controls and movement, everyone I see playing the game the first time will nonstop bonk on the walls and forget that climbing up walls is automated until it just randomly clicks and people can play the game correctly (and I usually see this happen at around world 3 - 5 depending on the person)
When I see the odd Pizza Tower thread with newfags that missed playing the game when it released, they all talk about trying to go for P ranks first thing but I always felt that misses the point of the game as on release P ranks were found as a secret which was part of what made trying to get them fun (just like Lap 2)
Back at release, the average new player's not going to complete the tutorial fast enough to unlock the L2 portals, so people only discovered L2 when replaying levels until you inevitably think "Can I just get everything in one combo?" and then you get the P rank screen which makes you feel cool

The release threads for this game were fantastic, some of the most comfy threads this board's had in years with anons sharing gameplay, secret locations, all the OC etc I'll never forget em

Also Pizzascare's the best level in the game and if you disagree you shrimply have bad taste and Golf is the worst level

Precision platformers like SMB and Celeste are a bit too boring for me honestly. The earlier levels let you reach the goal in different ways which is fun but the later levels only have one specific path to take to reach the goal (Celeste does this way more than SMB) and I just find that boring and forgettable. I'm bias anyway as I think Dustforce is probably the best one of that subgenre.
It's been years after 100%ing SMB and Celeste and I honestly don't remember the levels that well as they haven't stuck with me but I can still vividly remember games like Pizza Tower and DKCR. >speedrun-lite
This doesn't make sense to me. The escape sequence at the end of the level isn't meant to be a speedrun thing, but rather a final obstacle in the level. Time Attacks are a thing in video games and they are different from speedrunning.

really awesome game. tight controls with satisfying movement. really fun to master these levels.
S tier cartoony art direction and funky music. very few games get me to boot up a new save file immediately after hitting the end.

if you dont think the platforming in pizza tower was fun, then I dont think you like platformers.
Why would you even like wario games if you didnt like pizza tower? would you care to explain what kind of platforming is fun or not fun?

celeste is overhyped as fuck because it feels like theres no player expression. they set up these linear challenges than get solved in one way.
I will give celeste credit for its optional content and strawberry challenge, but its hardly the best.

It's the worst looking game since Bloodstained.
The handling is really good, but the first playthrough or 2 absolutely sucks because it's a speedrunning game, so it relies on you memorising the level layouts for it to be enjoyable.

The music is generic and amateur that sounds like some kid made it on his laptop with the default presets on his pirated VST's and loops off an old sample CD that came free on a the cover of a magazine.

Everything about the games visuals and audio is done in that modern, post-ironic "bad on purpose" style.

Wario Land 4 is a much better video game.

Don't know how to describe precisely, but wario feels way tighter and smoother to move around and the gameplay is more laid back. PT feels more awkward to control and rushed/stressful, also with worse level design and gimmicks. Probably just preference. It doesn't jive with me.

I only really hated doing Fake Peppino
His boss is really boring because he's the only boss where you need to specifically wait for him to be damageable for the entire boss fight, no idea why he's the only boss that's like that for the entire fight

understandable. the games don't play exactly the same and the gameplay pace does feels a little more intense in PT even when playing casually.

Pure millennial garbage and this is coming from a millennial.

Zoomers have the wrong idea, they think millennial games are gen X slop but millennial games are indy games that copies of SNES and NES games (in this case GBA iirc) but made on shitty modern engines. That's why Pizza tower, silksong, cuphead all fell like mobile garbage, because they are made with mobile garbage games. Pizza tower is just a mediocre Wario Land
