Why is Breath of the Wild such an iconic landmark game in Nintendo history? I struggle to think of a game from any other developers in the past decade that was pivotal for them.

The base gameplay and physics of BotW are great, but it gets old when you realize you can only find a handful of different things. You'll never find some cool temple to explore that's completely unrelated to the story, or some other landmark or something.

Actually you do find insanely cool locations, it’s just that it all goes to the same neon blue box puzzle to give you the same health/stamina upgrade you were expecting. Heart containers were far more rewarding in older games because of the various ways to collect them.

It was ign. It was GameSpy. It was game informer. It was every online interview. Nintendo power gave it a high praise.

The most fun I have with Nu-Zelda is wearing the OoT/Fierce Deity/Twilight Princess outfits and wandering the map while I listen to Zelda essays and lore videos. I don't even have any set goals in mind half the time -- I just pick a spot on the map far away from me and make a night out of walking there while I vibe out. It's nice when I want to go sightseeing and take a break from the older Zelda games, but the N64 and GCN titles always bring me back for their dungeons and visuals.

But you're right, there isn't a whole lot in those games that surprises me outside of the main story set pieces.

it just a good game. last game other than old shit that i finished and didn’t feel tedious. totk is tedious though, only got like halfway through it. too much bullshit going on for one game. crafting is tedious bullshit in every game it is in and they amped it up for totk.

i’m a confirmed 30 year old boomer now and will probably never have the time or energy to play through one of these 50+ hour games again so botw was a good note to go out on.

Has there ever been a game that so effectively rebuilt a franchise in terms of not just critical acclaim but also sales? In terms of impact I think only MGS and FFVII come even close to it, and BotW has dominated them in terms of acclaim and sales

autobuild was a solution to a problem a lot of anons complain about, that Nintendo didn't bother to lock in. If players were stuck using autobuilds the game provides in order to solve puzzles, it would have been equivalent to lock & key formula of previous games.

I know it has autobuild, but the meat of the game is still the building. If you avoid that feature it's literally botw. The world also felt smaller since you can launch yourself to anywhere on the map, and I thought gliding already made the og botw smaller than it actually is.
