I wonder what in Sony's review system allows this. All of these things release on Switch fine in Japan, just having a problem getting past NoA for a western release because they staff xaars. You'd think Sony would have an issue because Interactive is completely headquartered in caliphpornia and also filled with demonic entities. But they actually get some stuff pretty fine in both locations. Obviously, Sony itself is like the king of fanservice. Most of the great otaku anime nowadays are funded by Aniplex, a Sony underling. Not even Uni has her own game, it's not gonna happen. Another Neptunia game with Rom and Ram as playable characters and costume breaks would be something very daring nowadays, but if there is something that Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed and other games have proven...is the fact that costume breaks aren't too much for a game rated T for teen and 12+ in Europe, if the characters don't end nude like in some Senran Kagura games (they are left in underwear at most) and doesn't push a lot of fan service, a game with that feature can be rated T for teen, 12+ in Europe and CERO C (or less) in Japan. If something like that isn't approved, well, it's what other people have said, it's not the rating boards like ESRB, PEGI, the CERO etc, it's the platform holders and the companies developing and/or publishing the games.

It's hard to say there should be an obligation to platform holders to publish anything legally developed and rated, but they should at least allow the sale of physical copies if they don't want to host "controversial" games on their online stores.

It's telling about the absolutely dire position of Japanese-style fanservice on retail platforms that people have to invent cope about Sony somehow rescinding their policies just because they have a new president when everyone else from Nintendo to Valve has only been tightening the noose further and we have an example from just this year of a game that Sony censored. More likely, they're content now to just let the chilling effect do the heavy lifting now that no one will ever dare attempt something on the level of Senran Kagura or Genkai Tokki on their platform again. Nothing is going to change until we can figure out a way to directly pressure them to drop the censorship or face consequences, because they WANT to do this, they have nothing but sheer, bared contempt for Japanese subculture that refuses to submit to western feminism and DEI.

I think you could even have rear nudity in a T for teen game although it may have to be partially obscured. A lot of games like Senran and Gun Gun Pixies only get M ratings because they are solely about sexual pleasure (and because the weird aversion to touching mechanics). Ratings boards overall are pretty fair though as they take themselves seriously and aren't going to rate something up because of a nebulous thing not related to actual rating guidelines like "respect towards women" or character ages. Such a game could probably release on Nintendo Switch in Japan and maybe Steam if reviewer rng is good. Although there are some rumors they may have fired the bad reviewers after so many people piled on Valve for it, only time will tell if this is true. Although I do also feel it is unlikely simply because there aren't really any games solely about smaller lolis and their fanservice. Even in the "peak" era, there wasn't really anything done like this. Only indie games really have this content. I assume it is an appeal thing, not wanting to make something too "niche". Characters like Neptune can still be popular with nonlolicons because they are big enough that they can sort of deny it. The only reason you get anime like Illya is because the anime industry is filled with lolicons and they have proven to make good money. We need to find a way to flood the game industry with lolicons and show companies that it makes money. Call it LEI, Lolicon Equity and Inclusion.

There are exactly four viable video game storefronts, possibly even only three in the future. It's not too dissimilar from the VISA/Mastercard situation; distribution is too concentrated in a handful of platforms with outsized, monopoly-level influence for them to be allowed to get away with the "muh private company/platform" excuse. Valve alone has the power to decide if a game lives or dies on PC. That power should come with responsibility to fair and neutral, with real consequences for not being so. Consoles are heading toward a Sony/Nintendo duopoly, so it's not any different there, in fact it's arguably worse because there are literally zero alternatives to them in their own space.

We can only guess, but it's possible that Compile Heart and to an extent IFI aren't satisfied with the sales of Neptunia ReVerse for PS5, the PS5 never got remakes or new versions of Re;Birth 2 and 3, also, Compile Heart released PS4 versions of Re;Birth 2 and 3 last year and now IFI is publishing those PS4 versions in the west and, even though people though that they weren't going to do it, they are also releasing the PS4 version of Re;Birth 1 (Re;Birth 1+) in the west. In Japan it was Re;Birth 1+ in 2018 and then ReVerse in December 2020, in the west it'll be the other way around, first ReVerse and then Re;Birth 1+...huh.

Having said all that, yeah, it's possible that ReVerse more or less failed in sales.
