it's moreso because it's hard to do. idk how ng4 is, but all the ng games are VERY hard to get a grasp of the combo system, how to reliably be defensive and land counters, ect. It is very easy to over commit in ng if you dont know how to do shuriken cancels (the game doesnt really tell you) or just knowing the movesets in and out.

Comparatively, souls games have a much laxer combat system. You focus way more on just reacting to boss attacks/patterns, which is probably way more approachable for new players even if I personally think modern souls games suck.

The only good modern action game game is Nioh 2 because it's an action game that incorporated Soulslike features people enjoy.
People were happy spamming the same 2 overpowered combos to kill enemies 20 years ago but now things have changed. People want the enemy NPCs to be competent, people want to learn attack patterns, people want to react to stuff happening in the game.
Action games do not do any of that. You run around blindly so nothing can hit you until you find an enemy, you combo him, you start running around again. This is not fun gameplay.

I'm sure all action game fags bought it, going from the peak players, it sold around 150k on Steam, but it's a niche genre.

If they want these games to sell a lot, they really should look into making the learning curve better for new players, have 6 or 7 different difficulty levels, so you can please both the casual and hardcore audience, and make the transition smoother.

At its core melee action games have the best combat systems in any genre but really lack in approachability, any game from any genre starts easing you in into its mechanics while slowly making things harder, but action game devs are so focused on making a deep combat system they forget about some of the basics.

Hell, look at Monster Hunter, it was treated as a very difficult game to get into until World actually overhauled the new player experience, and it's now Capcoms best selling game ever, and even then, by the endgame, it also had a few of the most difficult fights in the franchise.

If traditional action games didn't want to get overtaken by Soulsslop they shouldn't have filled themselves with the most absolute rank dogshit level design known to man. Sure they have deep combat systems, but when I think about the most godawful annoying sections I've played in games, 90% of them are from action games that tried to add more "variety."

It's probably not as bad now but in the 2000s games like DMC, NG or Bayo would constantly throw you into shitty swimming sections, horrible boss fights against giant foes that just played keepaway the whole fight, tedious puzzles or janky arcade shooter bullshit. Characters in NG1 have heaps of personality. If you mean that they're not constantly yapping to express that personality, or going through insistent theatrics or having flamboyant personalities, its a critical part of NG for that not to be happening. Ryu is super serious professional ninja. Its nuanced. When he's talking to Murai you can see if not suspicion, then at least a tiny bit of impatience when murai questions him about the dark dragon blade. Its all in the body language. Its in Murai changing the subject slightly effusively when he realises he touched a nerve. Ryu's "he never seems to be satisfied with the power he wields" he expresses about his father also has a touch of impatience. The way he interacts with characters is just always impatient. Its that confidence on the brink of arrogance that comes with the territory of being insanely, obscenely competent at what you do.
He runs into Doku the first time and he immediately goes into ninja mode, what are the threats. What can he do. Probably not much only thing is to fight. He sees fiends and he just puts up his guard and stares them down because why would a ninja talk to a fiend? It sucks, but it's their own fault for pricing it this way. That's 3.5 Silksongs, or 4.5 Silksongs if you count the DLC. I'll get it when the deluxe edition is at 30 bucks a month from now. Something that helps DMC is since 3, it focused a lot more on it's stories and making the characters entertaining. Even Agnus is very funny. Also, it has pretty boys AND pretty girls. Haybusa is usually covered up by his mask, and even Yakumo is still has his mouth covered.
