Clever camera angles that put focus on something interactable.
Interactable 3d models having their brightness slightly increased in comparison to the environment around it. Enough that you'll notice if you're paying attention, but not too much to the point it looks distracting.

Happened to me just the other day. I was replaying The Darkness after 13 years and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get out of a room. 10 fucking minutes I spent jumping around, looking around for nooks and crannies. Eventually I looked up a YT playthrough and all you had to do was push some object outta the way with your demon arm. Y'see I thought the demon arm was tap R1 for a slash attack. I don't remember the game ever telling me to hold R1 to grab shit. Would yellow paint have helped me in that situation? No. But a tutorial prompt reminding me how to grab stuff probably would have.

I ended up hating this because the contrails were really obnoxiously bright and you still had to use their awful UI to place markers on a map. I like actual maps that are required for navigating, but game maps are over-depended on despite being useless and making the world feel smaller than it needs to. I think the wind should have been a swipe up to lead you to the nearest primary quest and a swipe down to lead you to the nearest secondary quest and there would be no map, codex, gear menu, any of that bullshit.

The animals that alert you to things were also dumb. The only one that actually fit was the smoke on the horizon letting you know where the camps were.

Fire every outsourced QA tester and replace them with QA departments that actually tell their testers what to do properly. Because that's what this ultimately boils down to. Testers are only assigned specific chunks of each game, so the guys testing the stuff later in the game complain that they don't know what to do if it was taught by the game in the early levels. You can easily teach the player how to properly pick up on cues on where to go, but the testers won't realize that if they're only testing later levels without any proper oversight. So they just slap yellow paint on everything so even the most braindead intern can test the game.

Literally just don't use the color yellow, and integrate things just a little bit.
SH2 remake used the color white to draw attention. Usually white fabric, which might hang loose and flutter in the wind, or be tightly wrapped near a crawlspace. Or sometimes they would use a bright flickering light. It looked fine, and didn't feel like a "hey, dumbass, go here" design.

Maybe it could be toggleable, something like an option to turn 'visual aide' on and off in the settings, or maybe something related to the difficulty setting.

Another option would be to just not do this hand holding,. Give some instructions, maybe show it on the map, but let the player figure out where he needs to go, where he can climb, where he should jump, etc.

for NG4 you don´t need previous knowledge they tell everything in just half a minute in the very beginning after the tutorial but the game is really different to how it was played before, now it´s more like a DMC
now mind you the game is 70$ but the master collection wich has the trilogy is right now on sale, for a beginner the master collection is good enough it doesn´t have the best version of ninja gaiden 1 and sadly it has the worst version of ninja gaiden 2 but with ninja gaiden 3 it´s kinda worth it for that last game alone if you can get it on sale.
the best version of ninja gaiden 1 it´s ninja gaiden black and the best version of ninja gaiden 2 it´s just the normal one , you can buy both on the xbox if you have it , if not again master collection it´s good and if it´s on sale even better. now those game are similar to ng4 but they have a more unique identity to themselves since it was not made by platinum games but by team ninja
the first 3 games are good but don´t go thinking it plays just like DMC or bayonetta or you will leave with a sour taste in your mouth
also if you are looking for a story , on ninja gaiden it doesn´t matter and the story on ninja gaiden 3 it´s pretty bad . personally i think NG4 has a worse story , it has a lot of plot holes and honestly you cannot even just past it over like with the first 2 games since platinum likes having drama in their games and they always try to have you engaged to the story even if that´s a really bad choice, they will interrupt you after every fight to have a codex talk all the time

There are a million ways to lead the player from place to place that don't require buckets of yellow splashed on everything. A lot of them are purely design based, using light, leading lines, environmental clues and so on. Even more of them can be made from the structure of the game where entities and enemies can be demonstrated to move through the environment, or goals can be presented based on landmarks and even explicit signage.

It's just fucking stupid to abandon all that in favor of coating every ledge with HEY LOOK AT ME I'M THE WAY TOWARDS THE NEXT RETARDED CUT-SCENE yellow.
