Anyway am I the only one noticing how fucking retarded this matchmaking system is? I'm in Legend 8 and nearly everyone around me is Legend 5+ and I'm just getting absolutely smoked every race. The real answer is it depends. On the final lap, it's much more important to keep it up all the time. If you have a shield, you can ignore it entirely and use your max speed time trial line. If you get wrecked and are in the back, same deal. Respond based on the items you have, how ahead you are, how risky it would be if you did get hit. The difference between 80% uptime and 95% uptime doesn't always matter.

Getting hit is more punishing. At best it's a 3 second time loss, compared to (on average) a 1 to 2 second time loss each lap due to Ultimate Charge making your line a little worse. Don't go without the shield unless you're 100% sure you can get away with it, the risk is rarely worth it.

The only time I'll bother to be greedy is before the first item box, on lap 1 if I'm behind, or if I have two shields or shield+wisp with a break away lead.
