You can collect the King's crowns in levels now. There are also powerups called freebies that help you with rolling shit up too. And also King tokens that I'm not sure of the purpose of yet. You can also make a completely OC donut steel cousin of your very own by mixing and matching bodies, faces, and colors. Aside from those, it's just more Katamari man. More of the same but the locations are very unique, it feels like another We Love Katamari, as in lots of interesting visual places and rolling objectives. The music really is great as well. Soulful cutscenes drawn and animated in the we love katamari style.
To me this game really feels like a proper "Katamari 3", because all the games from the X360 onward were tremendously similar to the older ones. This one actually feels and looks fresh while holding what made the original gameplay so enjoyable, which is really all I ever wanted out of the franchise.

If you want more Katamari, boy is this the game for you. I'm not saying that like it's a bad thing. It's a Katamari game that's fun along the lines of the first two and not tedious along the lines of the games that came out after the first two. Replaying levels for crowns might get old, but that'll only grate at you if you're a completionist.

If they had a dedicated Switch 2 version that'd be nice, but they don't - that extra power is only going to keeping the framerate at a solid 30 and if you primarily play in handheld, it'll max out at 720p on a 1080p screen. Looking at recommended specs, it should be a solid 60FPS, 900p on Deck.

Saying this as a Switch 2 owner as well.

Only played the few couple hours of it but I got S rank on every mission first try. There're powerups to make it easier and one is a magnet that automatically sucks in everything around you for 10 seconds or so. Using it at all pretty much instantly wins you the mission. Also if you replay any mission to find collectables you missed they give you a scouter that shows you everything on the map.
Maybe there's some harder missions later in the game but I can't see anything baring Cowbear as being challenging in any way.

The second one actually got a lot of new content too, with We Love Katamar Reroll+ Royal Reverie also having both new Namco Stickers to search for and even special levels where you play as the King when he was young (and you get to meet the Emperor, the King's dad and Prince's grandpa) which have their own story. Well worth it.

I also suggest buying and playing them in order, on Steam. The original Katamari Damacy is still amazing, and then move to We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie, and then to the brand new one.

Been out for like 3 hours. Having played an hour and a half, I can tell you its a new Katamari with no reused levels (so far). Power ups are a decent fit into the game, don't feel obtrusive to the gameplay. Presentation is generally fine. Music is good but if you REALLY HATE idol music composition wise you might be pissed off by Katamari on the Doun I guess. I love it though.

got to the third area just now and turned it off, its definitely a katamari game. right from the beginning, the stages all feel so densely packed and full of stuff this time, its nice. i like the powerups, didn't realize that if you dont use them they stay on you and go into the next level, that can be very useful. i miss having a jump button like in that one game, i think the ps4 one. not impressed by the music so far but i've only got about 4 songs. overall a very fun game, i can tell i'm going to enjoy this for a while, which is amazing because i didn't know it was happening and have almost zero games i'm looking forward too right now

Man, played 4 hours and this game is so much fun. Not sure if it will be my favorite but it's looking good.
It's so nice to have a Katamari game that isn't recycling as much content. The color customization is fun. I like that all the achievements are tied to crowns and not S ranks that I'm probably still going to do anyway.
How do you do the online multiplayer? Played it against the CPU but I don't quite see where to do online.

I played Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari in 2023 and 2024 on Steam. Great games, though I am the kinda player who plays a level once and is satisfied rather than 100%ing all of it. I like the ones where you start tiny and get big enough to roll up entire islands and stuff
What will I have thought of this game once I marathon it?

Are the one stick movement, one stick camera controls worse this time around or is it just me? I played We Love Katamari Reroll for hours before the new one came out and the game controlled like butter, very responsive turning and easy to move around the levels. This new game the camera movement feels much more finicky, like if you are off just a few degrees in your camera input you will not move around smoothly at all.

Damacy had more difficult movement, you could get stuck more easily, and you generally had to use the "roll up the side of something" more often even to just explore. You also had far larger time limits.

We Love Katamari made the movement easier, you could just roll over anything that you'd get stuck on previously. It's almost comically easy.
Both games had you start out fast, then by the last level when you get a giga sized ball you are really really slow even with dashing. The levels were more focused on speedrunning, ie. you couldn't just dick around exploring and still get the high score like in the first game, the time limits were far tighter and you needed to actively know which parts of the stages you can use to grow fast, in order to make high scores. Far more puzzle elements to it.

This game seems to start you out moving super duper fast, even too fast to roll precisely. The levels so far seem to be very "busy", there are many objects and tight places and you grow very quickly, so it's easy to get stuck. I still only played the first few levels, it seems you slow down a bit on later levels.

Changing shape seemed like a good gimmick to me, and I wish the Rerolls added it, as in KD it would help fit in narrow gaps/avoid shit, and WLK would be improved with the ability to pick up shit faster quite a lot of the time (would certainly improve the fucking roses level). Whats mainly missing from his new games is there's no real challenge or resistance. In katamari you can actually fail every level, and sometimes have pretty strict/annoying challenges. Replayability is also heavily encouraged as you plan out better routes and go for better scores.
Learning to roll feels like a unique skill you actually learn, and I can't think of many other games that do that.

The ranking being onscreen at all times is really a nice touch. It's great knowing how big/fast I gotta make things to super clear the level. Just a shame there's no knowing how fast you have to go for a meteor on large as possible levels.

I'm probably in the minority that liked the Vita game, but I also picked it up at a heavy discount, which I only recommend, because it's about as short as the original game, with extra content locked behind a pay-2-not-grind wall that I didn't bother with outside of the Pac-Man level, and the other one I can't remember.

The game feels a lot like WLK 2.0 so far, which makes sense if the devs worked on rerolled. Curious if there will be gimmicks from BK or Forever showing up. I think my favorite levels so far has been the dinosaur one and the pirate ship. Best song is the one in the level with the guy eating.

I thought it was the opposite, the original game sold moderately well in Japan but was constantly sold out in America

I am a bit of two minds about adding the extra collectibles and challenges, on one hand it makes for a more complete game but on the other it feels like it goes against the purity of rolling the katamari in various sitatuations and that the final message of WLK was to stop playing and go touch grass.
