I downloaded a free to play game on my phone and it's a massive socialization hub. So it seems alive and well.

Launch day MMOs are filled with people looking for a novel experience, hence the burst of friendliness and energy, which the introverts still feed off of, feeling great. Matchmaking. It's a system that doesn't value your time and doesn't value your fun. Because you don't pick your games, you have no internal investment in them, and because it's not drop-in/drop-out continuous play you never build up any kind of rapport with anyone playing with you.

Forcing in-game communication just makes it harder to bond with other people, if that game servers are gone or you or the other isn't interested in that game anymore for whatever reason you just lose communication with that person.

I've met people where we used to play one game, got bored of it but we still chat and play other games or move on to other games.

Discord is visually appealing and works well, it's appearance is why it blew every other VOIP programs out of the water. All other '''gamer''' chat programs were just functional but looked like shit.

I mean I was on fucking Skype before Discord, though this was a fun time for contact threads on /soc/ because this was when there were actually hot women on there and not trannies everywhere.

I feel like we label certain behaviors as "autistic" when it's nothing more than being more observant and methodical than others. It comes out in different ways, but it all is explained by simply noticing patterns and the way people operate and acting accordingly.
The frustrating thing is that we are constantly punished for reading people's motivations and intentions and acting accordingly. Like if you express a negative reaction to something then I would remember that and naturally refrain from doing that moving forward. How does it make sense to later get upset that I respect your attitudes and feelings or act all weirded out that I remembered something that you said two weeks ago? Or if you call something by an unconventional term I'll pick up on it and adopt it in our conversations, and then you turn around and act like I'm the moron because I called something by the term you established just so we could better understand each other and work on a common ground. Again, it just feels like being punished for respecting people's intentions and trying to play by their rules. I honestly just learned to stop acting on these observations because I can tell people get weirded out, like I'm weird for remembering things people tell me about themselves through subtle means of expression. I've never ever been banned from an online game in 23 years of online gaming, even modern games.
I use voice chat and interact with people and don't shy away from trolling and banter.

It's a genuine skill issue if you get banned. I am however pretty good at provoking people into hurling slurs and then reporting them and getting them banned. But that's just a simple matter of self control.

and the retarded gms actually banned them. These guys had been playing the game every day for years. They clearly werent bots on throw away accounts, and they werent doing anything weird to farm gold. they were just hardcore chinese players. It took them 3 months to convience the game staff to get them unbanned, but they finally were able to do so since they werent cheating.

then the game changed publishers, and these faggots did it again. They wormed their way into the community volunteer side of the new official discord, became friends with the gm/jannies, and got their enemies banned a second time for the same made up bullshit.

I can't comment on others, but I think Discord, Skype, etc. were the direct cause of eventual downfall of socialization in games. Part of being immersed in an MMO is leaving your identity behind and assuming another. There's something that's particularly different about communicating with another party purely through text. It is why I have always liked message boards and this site. I have had numerous insightful, long conversations with others in party via text. I knew they were still real people, obviously, but the lack of voice made the conversations more impactful for some reason. After I started using Skype and later Discord with my buddies, group chat pretty much became a thing you only used to bitch at others about when they fucked up. I had two completely different experiences of joining a friend group, both times invited by one of the people in it who I just happened to befriend outside of the group. In the first group, the guy who invited me actively tried to get me to participate. He pinged the other friends and made me part of the discussion and the game sessions. I quickly warmed up to them and sort of integrated into the group. In the second server, our mutual friend just brought me into the server and sorta just dumped me there to fend for myself. It was up to me to befriend this group of like twenty strangers all on my own. Even now I still don't really know anyone there that well. You really do need to get lucky when it comes to joining pre-established friend groups. Even amongst the friend group itself, some friends might be more welcoming whereas others might just bring you in and leave you to fend for yourself

Some of the most exciting possibilities of MMOs and MMO-type games were never meaningfully explored, and the MMO genre in general suffered for various other reasons, never really developing as people used to think it could.
A lot of what people appreciate in MMOs, they rarely if ever talk about. It's not always socializing or cooperation, there's enormous potential for more subtle let's say coexistence that could really elevate and redeem MMOs and games with MMO aspects.
I personally can't stand live service games as they are now, whether they're MMOs or not, but the fundamental concept of it would be necessary for what I'm talking about to really be.
