I looked it up and answered my own question, Transformer models compare each token with every other token in the window, which means compute and memory scale quadratically with context length.
doubling context length quadruples compute and VRAM demand, small models with 128k tokens already take 20gb VRAM, so for the billions/trillions of tokens needed for a consistent game world would require petabytes of VRAM and unimaginable compute.

so with this current approach it's impossible, they'd need to invent a whole new way to do it that isn't transformer models.

There are lots of ways around this. I get what you're saying but it's not a big a deal as you think. You can break up tasks instead of needing 100gb vram. Like local models generating minute long clips on a single gaming GPU, going by your logic that's impossible but it's not. You just have to set up your tool properly.

There is and we've seen this happen many times in the past 5+ years. It's also not some exercize of faith. It's inarguable that more hardware = more capabilities. When they have more hardware to work with they can experiment more with training runs to figure out how to do something and then train that model faster and bigger and see what pops out.

The speculation is more about when we'll have insane models, not that we will have them. It is obviously coming. People are getting kind of crazy thinking it has to come soon or that it won't come at all or that it is coming soon. The truth is we don't know but scaling up will bring us closer to more breakthroughs because one of the huge limiting factors in progress is the cost of training runs. More compute = lower costs.

The only thing that matters about AI: is making NPCs for video games smarter. Despite having an AI explosion in ai creation I do not predict that machines will work out smart NPC behaviour, or at least in a context of video game development sense, it's easy to generate a very vague framework. That only ever happens when a developer themselves figures out a magic trick with their code to give the illusion of intelligence when they develop dynamic AI. Which is what most of us are looking for generally, better illusions of NPC intelligence.
