I would normally wait until a sale but I felt I had to show Itagaki some respect by buying a physical copy at 70 dollars. His interviews always entertained me as a youngin' reading gaming magazines. Yes, I did die at least 8 times to the first boss and yes, I am hopeful we will get another DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball localized. One day.

It's an awesome game, my only real gripe is that the pacing is a bit baggy for a fast paced action game. Some chapters feel like they drag on a bit too long, and holy shit that switch to Ryu felt awkward as fuck

I'm almost glad Ryu only got 4 missions, they felt very tacked on to the story. I almost feel it would be better if the game was a bit shorter and tighter, but I realize I'm in the minority on that

Anyone else think healing items should be rarer/more expensive? Like, i feel like they should only let you buy the standard healing item and the one that heals a lot and the other ones you can only find through exploring because as it is right now i feel like you can brute force through a lot of encounters by using healing items.

My main complaint would be that Yakumo would be in an area for 3 chapters, it makes the location he's in tiring by the end of the third chapter, it reminds me of Sonic 1. In NGII when Ryu was in a new location, he was usually there for only 2 chapters and it felt perfect. I feel like potential Ryu chapters were wasted because Yakumo had to be in a location for too long. He did not need to chase a fucking fish for 3 chapters.

Not really because 4 incentivizes the scoring more and using items is a detriment to your score. If they made healing items rarer then I think they should remove the score detriment as well.
In other NG games I'm fine using items, but in 4 I try to avoid it as much as possible because of how the scoring works.

Words can't describe what NG4 has done to me. I love this game so much, if the DLC fleshes out the game, adds enough new weapons to Ryu, then this will be a masterpiece that will be played for decades. Looking at the reception of NG4, I now fully hate the modern gaming industry. Anyone who truly loves Ninja Gaiden II, will automatically love Ninja Gaiden 4, because Ninja Gaiden 4 is the only Ninja Gaiden game that puts you in the same mental state as Ninja Gaiden II. Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge have a way different approach and mental state with their gameplays.

I never played NG2 (only sigma from the master collection) but all I hear is that that game was UT spam, which isnt as prevalent in 4 I feel. lots of enemies block it, and most if not all instantly do something to kill you if as much as hold the Y button for 1 second

The only thing that I think is bad that Ryu lost is the xy hold launcher that keeps you on the ground. Otherwise all the new stuff makes up for how the combo system has changed, the way you can string things together in 4 provides for way more new combos than the strings he's lost. I think some of the people who complain about lost strings probably aren't good enough at Ryu to understand this yet.
I also desperately miss Underworld drop, but that's just visual variety. I hope it's added in the DLC somehow.

Yes, Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 4 are the only complete games that are polished. Ninja Gaiden 4 is not a Ninja Gaiden game because it materialized the technologically progressive zeitgeist of the decade in its aesthetic by going for a Cyberpunk anime route but abandoned everything that held and made the franchise so dear in its regard.

Combat has become too much like Devil May Cry in which its favored style over substance. The combat in NG1+2 had a strategic layer and depth in which you had to focus on your enemy's movements to see what attack patterns they'll unleash next. Here, it's nonexistent. And with the fact that the movelist showcase is always shown on the left corner of the HUD similar to DMC's also compounds with this case. In short, combat has become shallower than ever.

Second, the story is nonexistent. Yes, we know that story isn't to be expected in a video game; let alone a character action game. But having a story helps gamers invest themselves better by playing it. NG1 had you en route to Tairon to avenge your clan and destroy the dark dragon blade. NG2 had you traveling around the world in 3-4 days to save your clan. NG3...well, the less said about that, the better. But it was still good with Razor's Edge. In NG4, there's nothing going for it. Even without the mention of Ryu, legacy characters like Rachel, Momiji, and Irene are nonexistent and don't bother showing up in the story. Making this feel more like an AU fanfiction entry than the next installment in the series.

Thirdly and finally is the level design of this game. Levels are far too linear, almost like Shattered Dimensions and early 2010s kind of linearity. NG1-3 had at least a semblance of open-endedness in which one path could lead you into three score and you'll still be surprised with what you could find behind what catches your eye. The sewers in NG1 were a great example of this. Here, it's just

The cold, corporate level designs are not much appealing either. It's lacking in color and depth and don't leave much to the imagination. But it's not inasmuch as the level designs being bad because they look bland. But you can look at them and see and compare the lack of ingenuity to be found within the designs themselves. You'd expect to at least find or see a scarab to collect or Ninpo between doors, corridors, and onwards. Similar to hidden walls that you'd find in Dark Souls. Granted, there's enough to go on about but the level design philosophy in itself encompasses everything that's wrong with it in that it just feels too bland.

The NG series, even with its flaws, always had an intricate sense of moral grandstanding and oriental scope that helped capture the feel of 80s action movies and Straight-to-VHS OVAs. But as this series approaches its swan song, I think Itagaki realized that the corollaries between game developers and AI would much rather leave him taking this series to the grave than ever hoping for us to move on with Ryu's story because Ryu's story isn't ever one to end or be mentioned. It's one that is transparent in the hearts of gamers and the heart of the NG series. A heart that yet may beat as much as a newborn as it would for an elderly. But also one that cannot be mended when even its artist dies.

ADHD screen filling lights, colors and effects all over.
NG1 was very grounded and tame compared to other action games, even if you fought big monsters and tanks.
There weren't constant 10 energy blades being swung around.

I have played my fair share of action games, including TN's other titles like Nioh, Wo Long and Ronin, though I haven't played any of Platinum Games, and I think I don't understand the combat. Not saying the game is bad, just saying I don't understand it. I am currently being filtered by Chapter 3's Kitsune Courtesan and I think I need some help.

I'm so used to other action games where I can get a few hit in, run out and position myself outside of the boss attack then run back in for a few hits after the bosses finish their turn. Or in the case of parryslops like Wo Long and Ronin, the enemy attacls (at least the early bosses) have clear tell and rhythm that I can get their patterns down after 3 or 4 tries, but NG4's combat rhythm feels a lot more unorganized so hit&run or parryslop Simon says strategies don't work for me. Master Ninjas, please teach me your way.

Block the rapid multi hit, maybe dodging the last attack, with the slower ones you can block the first hit and go for the parry on the second and make sure you do the counter since it drops a red orb you can use for a UT. Blocking is super strong in this game and in NG in general, you don't have to react to everything.

I have bad news for you anon, Platinum Games can't make good action games, they are too retarded to do this. If you read all the developer blogs and interviews, you would learn that Team Ninja literally kept a leash on Platinum Games, they had to tell Platinum Games to change and re-balance their overpowered autism mechanics many times until it became acceptable within a Ninja Gaiden formula framework.

The even more sad part is that Team Ninja knows what a good action game should be, but they don't have the technical knowhow, programming talent+expertise nor the confidene to make a pure action game.

Ninja Gaiden 4 being this good is because of the unique strength and weaknesses of both Team Ninja and Platinum Games being a perfect fit for eachother and the fact this game was made at all is because Phil Spencer caught wind of the talks between two friends who are higher ups at PG and TN talking about the possibility of making a game together. Xbox has new leadership and direction now, so something like this won't ever get funded again. Many things fell into place at the right time, it was pure luck that NG4 was made. Koei Tecmo has 0 interest in making pure action game and wouldn't have funded NG4.
