>It's just that Khaenriah in general is so fucking important to everything that this approach kinda felt flaccid.
Anon, they've been kind of carving Khaenriah out of the story since Fontaine.
Basically by Fontaine they considered the Khanerian story solved. It was a kingdom that played with abyss like many before it. And like all others, it fucked up and got punished for it. Deshret was the same. Jinnies were the same. Remuria was the same. Hyperborea was the same. Hence the World Formula that Rene created.
They unearthed the last bit of Khaenrian lore with the sinners in the Fontaine-Natlan intermezzo with the sinners, but that was to get new baddies you can beat up. And most importantly, they were split from Khaenria itself by stressing that they took the power and completely disassociated themselves with Khaenria. Warrior went to play Dragon Ball Z in space. Alchemist became a god. Prophet merged with the leylines and became a time-hopper, etc.
Then you get Natlan and it's completely devoid of Khaenrian history despite being a honeypot of abyssal power, tech that can fuck up the gods and stories that explain how to fight them.
Khaenria is not the focal point of Genshin's modern story. It is part of the leftover baggage that already outlived its usefulness but hasn't received complete closure yet.
