BR2 is more well-rounded. It addresses some of the first game's weaknesses and I'd argue it's a better game overall, but it's also less unique and ambitious. BR2 has a superior plotline with better pacing, better side-characters/character interactions, and snappier combat (also just plain better combat on the higher difficulties, but those are locked until you clear the game for some stupid reason.) If it's something you care about, BR2 also actually does have yuri elements, unlike the first entry.

It has a Steam version and a PS4 version. The PS4 physical copy is difficult to get and if there is a listing on eBay, it's very expensive. There's also a PS Vita version only released in Japan if you want to play it in Japanese for some reason or if you have a hacked/moded vita to download the fan patch and play it in English even on PS Vita.

You can but it's not necessary. They pretty much tell you the major events that happen during it. There's a couple of characters from the gacha as well and they do a pretty good job of bringing up the major story beats so you never feel lost. I've heard of the game crashing on PC, assests not in 1080p and just 720p and also a lack graphical settings, it's supposedly a decent (at best) port of the PS4 version and not much else. It doesn't have cut content of course, it's the same content as the western PS4 version, which means that if you get DLC and can access the model viewer, the camera is restricted, other than that, the game is uncensored on PC and it has the same translation, scenes, etc.

It's alright as far as I'm concerned, I didn't much like the second game. It lacked what made the first game so unforgettable and moving. I also think the reflector designs were awful and it also lacked the sense of intent and purposefulness that the first game had. Like, the entire first game was about Hinako's journey to learn how to cope with loss and to find a reason to keep on living, and every artistic aspect of the game revolved around that idea; To reconnect her with a world that she has long since disconnected from.

If Gust ever returns to this series I'd like it to have at max three protagonists, like Hinako, Yuzu and Lime. The first game technically had its own world-ending threat going on, it was just more out of focus since the game was more about Hinako's personal struggles and development. I do prefer BR1's approach in that regard, though, and I wish it wasn't so rare to have more character-driven stories rather than always having the protagonist reacting to a particular threat. That's one thing I like about a lot of the Atelier games: the protagonists have their own personal goals they're trying to achieve, and that's the focus of the plot rather than some disaster or villain.

I played most of BR1 but fell out of it eventually. It felt like I was playing a VN and I am very rarely in the mood for that. The OST is probably what kept me playing for as long as I did, I think I got about 20 hours in? Unfortunately, I can't go back to replay it because I pirated it and the save is almost certainly lost from when I reinstalled windows.

On the one hand, BR2 is a direct sequel with some returning characters. On the other hand, the protagonist of BR2 is a new character that has no knowledge of prior events, and everything the player really needs to know gets explained when it's relevant. I think it's fine to start with BR2 if you want.

Personally, I'm actually more fond of the first game, as it's more unique and ambitious and has higher highs than BR2. BR1 does have more serious flaws, though, and BR2 is a more well-roubded game that's easier to recommend.
