So uh, what happened there? Why was there such a mass psychosis regarding this game that has since flipped back the other way? With a game like Braid I can at least understand that it was a lot of people's babby's first indie game, but this was a major production. I don't think I've ever seen a game's general consensus in the public drop this hard without something like a really bad update being released.

My theory is that a bunch of journalists that had never played a game with a heavy emphasis on story before were shocked to see a game doing this, even though there are older games with better stories. A lot of the reviews at the time were rambling on and on about the story while barely even mentioning the gameplay, and that hype wound everyone up into thinking it must be a masterpiece because every big publication was saying it was. After that initial wave of hype had time to cool down, people looked back and took the game for what it really was.

The ending doesn't make sense. If Elizabeth went back in time to drown Booker so he wouldn't become Comstock she would never be born, which is a Grandfather paradox. We know this is true because she vanishes after doing it. But she shouldn't have even been able to do it in the first place

Secondly, assuming there really are infinite realities and possibilities her drowning Booker doesn't matter, because then there would be infinite realities where an alternate version of her went back in time, but didn't drown Booker, there would have to be infinite Comstocks

It's like an Oscar bait film.
It "deals" with racism (by being brave enough to say racism is bad), it features very emotional scenes (like the unprompted guitar/singing scene, the farewell to that mechanical bird guardian), it's got a seemingly deep and meaningful plot (that doesn't make sense, but you get your tragic and deep ending)...
The gameplay was a step down from B1+2, but that was never really praised. All these reviewers care about is how much like a movie the game is, how cinematic and dramatic it can get.
That's also why TLoU is praised so highly. The gameplay is nothing special, but it has great non-interactive scenes!

She kills Booker in the past, but he still exists in the very end. Also, there's another Booker in one of the DLCs. So it just works however the writers wanted it to work.
Problem is that for most of the game they insist that there are rules to this. Constants and variables and all that. And then they just ignore that part to tell the story they want.

Dumb people LOVE plot twists. If they see a plot twist in the end of the game they immediately forget everything that preceded it and call the game a masterpiece. Bioshock 1 and 2 I regard as the best games of all time in the FPS-genre. The story and the gameplay are brilliant. Infinite was just a shooting gallery and plot written by a hack high on his farts. That's all.

Okay, here's a thing that I never really got. I suspect there's no real answer to it, but I might have missed something.
We only really care about two timelines in the game: One where Booker was a drunk and had a baby girl, and one where Booker became Comstock and traveled to Booker's timeline and stole his baby.
One of the twins gets a guilty conscience and they bring over Booker to Comstock's timeline so he can save his now grown-up daughter. So far so good.
But it's made extremely clear that many Bookers have tried to save their daughter before. Where do these Bookers come from? Yes, there are countless Bookers, Comstocks, and daughters, but the twins are apparently only interested in their Booker/Comstock, from their timelines, which makes sense. They can't feel responsible for what another set of twins did to the Bookers in their timelines.
So where are they pulling these Bookers from? I guess they could be pulling the same Booker over and over, like the first is from 15:00 and he failed, then they try again with a 14:50 Booker (since he's still in his own timeline by this point), and then a 14:40, etc.
It would have to be the same timeline Booker, right? Booker-A has to save daughter-A from Comstock-A. If other timelines were involved, they'd end up with Booker-F saving daughter-C from Comstock-C.

It's just a very obvious part of the game to be missing a proper explanation.
But it is very clear that they had certain scenes they wanted and then just ignored everything else.
We need a twist, so Booker needs amnesia. Why did he lose his memory? Well, that happens when you go to another timeline. Does it happen to everyone all the time? No, just Booker that one time.

In retrospect the initial reception this game got is so fucking confusing looking back. The story's a complete mess but that's what it got praised for the most, while the gameplay is just mediocre to downright frustrating. Fuck that fucking ghost boss you had to fight three times Jesus Christ.

It's really simple: Every few years, gamers/games journalists get really self-conscious that they are playing/writing about things that are typically lowbrow, and so will massively boost for some game as super high art so they can feel good about playing serious literature. The issue is, these games are usually midwit-tier pseud affairs, so with time people realize the forced narrative they pushed. It's simple, the hype. People were craving a new Bioshock game for a long-ass time, and that one had flashy and refined visuals as well as the cutest "best sidekick ever" that helped you in combat, which wasn't common. That along with the convoluted story that looks more deep than it is built up a preception of the gamel being any good, again influenced by the lack of a new Bioshock game for a while.
Then time moved on and the rose colored glasses faded to reveal what the game really was, a mediocre FPS with little substance to it. It's all about the hype train. All aboard! Choo choo!
