Was the leveling experience always so shitty, even in 2004?

Was it this shitty in 2004 or is this a modern phenomenon? I can imagine in 2004, people socialized a lot more with strangers. Things like talking to strangers over the internet were still not taken for granted. Also, open world was a relatively new and mind-blowing thing at the time. I can imagine doing the same reskinned 5 quests over and over again felt more exciting back then.

I've made two classic characters since 2019 and both times I've gotten burned out at lvl 25 just because of how insanely boring it gets at that point. Even when playing it as a "second monitor" game the boredom is mind-numbing. Literally no one socializes. The world feels dead. Might be an EU realm thing because half of the realm population consists of humorless german autistics and rude french assholes.

another modern problem. While WoW admittedly always had some anti-social design, there was never a real penalty to questing with a partner so long as it meant you were killing things twice as fast.

Immersed in what exactly? Killing mindless mobs at a snails pace with the exact same skill rotations for hours. Occasionally some rogue 20 levels above you one shots you out of nowhere and you have to run back to your corpse. After hours of playing, all the social interaction was some player on the same faction hogging quest mobs and refusing to group up. And some guy saying LFM [Quest 8 levels above you] and him not even getting a reply because nobody talks.

Wasn't in 2004, nor in 2020 when classic launched. The novelty of conversing with people online has worn off and thus the social aspect of MMOs has died with it.

Neither of those things are true, provided you are willing to start conversations and help people. I added about 20 people to my friends list after things just in the last month, and that was while playing a mage who spent 80% of his time AoE grinding.

played classic the last time in 23 and i actually had fun time leveling (outside of getting ganked by bored lvl 60s) much better than the actual classic release when everyone was just trying to aoe dungeon farm.
but yes classic leveling can be a bit grindy and not everyone want to talk or team up but i still met some nice people along the way.

i must be the only person on the planet who actually enjoys the WoW world, environment, music, art, etc. That is the genius of WoW. the combat and questing are fun, but it's truly just a vehicle to go see red ridge, or duskwood, or stranglethorn vale, or the pirates in tanaris, etc etc

leveling as a group is unironically better in modern versions of wow compared to vanilla.

vanilla WoW has stupid quest design where the whole party fights over quest turnin items, which just slows everything down, especially since you often gotta wait for respawns of mob camps.

Yes, this was actually ground breaking at the time because most other mmo's had you squat in dungeons or "camping" spots for hours on end, grinding the same respawning mobs over and over again.

The quality of people online has gone to shit. In 2004 the majority of people online were white and mostly well adjusted. They were either people with jobs or teens from well off families that can afford computers and internet.
Nowadays the people online are fucking pajeets, mental cases, trannies.

In the past I met likeminded people online and met girls, two of them became my girlfriends. You wouldn't know what you will get if you talk to a random person online.

Very true. I think a lot of it comes from the fact that people now just talk in discord though, guild chats and local chats used to be a lot more chatty. Even on mobas I used to use in game VOIP to talk to friends, which would result in talking to randoms. Nowadays I would always just use discord or a direct call

Ignoring the changing demographics of online users, a big reason why WoW isn't as fun as it could be is that the game was shit out unfinished and instead of finishing the game they released expansions that simply move to the next bit of content and old content is abandoned.
What sucks is that the side content is bad. Take professions as an example. Shit sucks. You can't make anything of any value until you hit max level when you will be able to craft 1 single piece of gear that is usable for 1 specific spec. The entire point of blacksmithing is that you can make a helmet that is good for a warrior.
The professions are money sinks that require you to buy items from other people, like enchanters being forced to buy overpriced rods from engineers.

You make pure trash you only make to get your level higher, then to make things worse the professions are designed that at a certain point the only way to progress in the profession is to go to middle of nowhere and grind some mob for a 0.5% drop of some shit just so you can get 5 more points and learn the next useless blueprints.
Blizzard had to fix this shit and give you better things to craft. They should have done things like make locked chests more common and have better loot so people who craft keys can open them. If you are a tailor you should be able to craft better cloth than quest rewards.
A lot of the game is like this. There is no point do doing this extra shit. WoW is just raiding. PvP sucks and is pointless. There is no meaningful world pvp. There is nothing you can do with gold.

What's the best way to play 1-60 classic nowadays with no expansion being added? Retail classic? Turtle? Hardcore? I don't wanna start and be forced to turn it into tbc, it's only vanilla for me.

blacksmithing has always been the historically shittiest one that could only be justified by the toppest end guilds funneling materials into a smith.
in later WoW expansions they let Blacksmiths forge belt buckles with gem slots. thats not massive, but its something.

imo the aim should be to be like alchemy. always useful in every expansion and vanilla too. sometimes not massive, but "nice to have". or alternatively like engineering which is a very selfish profession but has tons of fun tools.

When classic released I had a good time leveling and for a time it felt like back in vanilla, sort of. It was when I hit max level and the game had try hard guilds trying to min-max everything in raids like people do in retail that I lost interest.

In 2004 you couldn't get people to shut up in most zone chats even on small population servers.
Everyone grouped up outside of dungeons, even giant introverts like me. Quests were harder because game knowledge was much worse overall.
Classic is also easier because the patch they choose to go live with patch 1.12 which was an end of vanilla patch. It has numerous class buffs and NPC nerfs to speed up progression.

I played WoD leveling when it came out and it sucked dick. NuWoW leveling might be the very definition of movie game even if no one realizes it. You walk from vignette to vignette in service of “lore characters” and that’s it. The world isn’t real since it can’t kill you or provide a challenge.

Never said it was. Vanilla was more difficult than Classic for a few different reasons. Game knowledge being non existent was the biggest one.
Although some quests were "hard" because the drop rates were cosmically low. I spent days in that cave trying to find Helcular's Rod.
You could also solo level with no problems, you just had to skip a lot of elite quests.

Classic and TBC were ambient tracks for the most part. I prefer that style for zones in general, although it's not universally better by any means. WotLK is where you saw the switch to melody heavy orchestral tracks.
Also, WoD was over ten years ago. Not exactly a good indication of retail WoW I imagine.

You just played it because everyone else was as a kid and it imprinted on an entire generation. MMO player populations are migratory. WoW's strategy for keeping them was progression resets and it worked. As much as everyone hated and complained about it, they still kept playing. Its a valid strategy for retention that's only failing now because the content that comes with the resets has plummeted in quality severely.
