I'll shamelessly consider Dungeon Keeper-series as an RTS.
In that vein I'll also shill War for the Overworld as the spiritual Dungeon Keeper 3.
>>724906221
I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in right near the start of the thread.
Was this game really not that popular?
This seems like as good an opportunity to ask as any, I bought these in a bundle over a decade ago but does the Anniversary Edition contain the expansions or am I supposed to install them separately? The store page implies it contains them

I played this in 2001. It was developed by some Taiwanese studio. In the game you have two maps - local and global. You send the troops to the global map to enter "strongholds" either occupied by the AI or neutral. You conquer them so you have many local maps where you get to have the gates and the walls preventing the enemy from entering until they are breached. There's also cool stuff like research and rituals in the temple that give you all sorts of boons.

This game is kinda shit but it had one really cool mechanic, you could lob limbs off your opponent's mech, steal them, bring them back to base, reverse engineer them, and use that component for your own mech.

There's been several attempts at it. Like World in Conflict, and that Red Dragon game. The irony being that the abstraction most games use to make their gameplay work could probably benefit a modern warfare style RTS. Worked out well for CnC Generals.

Most obvious cause is that the genre fragmented and split heavily, with more and more prevalence of 4X games, different types of RTS like Total War, MOBAs, eventually colony sims popping up to fill the "gather-resources-and-base-build" desire, and so on.
The real reason though is just that actual PC gaming died. Essentially every fundamentally PC genre died over the course of the 00's. CRPGs? Dead. Space Sims? Dead. Arena FPS? Dead. And so on.
The only things that survived lived through being small enough scale for the indie boom in the early 2010's, or by a couple of individual huge games that carried their genre alone.

the sheer amount of expansions, spin-offs, clones, mods, bootlegs, let alone illegally released copycats (*cough* Red Ice *cough*) is mind boggling. And that's not even including Nival's plagiarized pseudo-3D copycat - Blitzkrieg.

My theory is it was impossible to monetize.
Look at sc2 for example. The game + expansion format simply doesn't work when you could instead sell loot crates to whales for 4 million dollars. A whale in an rts can only spend as much as a regular gamer.

no it's different. I can't say if it feels the same for someone else but for me it doesn't. The original Sudden Strike game was actually a third installment of Russian language WW2 RTS developed by a bunch of people who finished some fancy electronics institute in early 1990s or so. Blitzkrieg came much later and was just one example of Nival's shady habit of stealing other people's ideas.

This is all generally correct, but missing the core issue. People became extremely insecure faggots due to self-esteem educational models eliminating social competition from life, and RTS is one of the quintessential competitive genres. That's ultimately what caused the splintering. If people aren't looking for competition, other genres do what single-player RTS does, but better. In the online RTS games still alive today, the most popular modes are co-op compstomps and team games.
The FGC likely only survived by grace of the genre's approachability due to its extremely low skill floor. Competitive FPS has only become more team-based over time. MOBAs became more popular not just because they're far simpler with a character focus for people like this
>>724918704, but because they are fundamentally imbalanced and team-based, allowing protection of the ego in almost all situations. Compared to RTS, most 4X and sims are entirely constructed around a more relaxed single-player experience, have a much lower skill floor, and have more depth and content.
There's also the contributing factor that, being inherently competitive, RTS is stressful, and the vast majority of people aren't looking for more stress in their lives right now.

I'll add to this that the genre is saturated, just like FPS.
There are so many existing titles with variations in mechanics and themes that I'm not sure what a new RTS could do to differentiate itself. Speaking personally, I can't imagine what would get me to stop playing AoE2 (other than continued dogshit expansions, but then it's back to Voobly). Microsoft tried with 4, but that was basically AoE3:2 and only supplanted that less popular entry.

It’s a cool idea in theory but in practice the mechanic isn’t really all that fun and becomes anachronous once you move beyond the Napoleonic Era.

>It’s a cool idea in theory but in practice the mechanic isn’t really all that fun and becomes anachronous once you move beyond the Napoleonic Era.
It works if an NPC controls the vast legion of mooks and the player is just one unit in that vast sea of mooks (see: RUNNING WITH RIFLES) and some PvP FPS game I can't remember the name of where it's another player putting down buildings and making NPC units and stuff, but I think at that point you're entering ASSFAGGOTS territory if you have to make the player characters unique from the NPC mobs.

I liked playing some of these games competitively, but not others. I grew up treating AoE3, AoM, and Rise of Nations as Sim City builders in single player mode. When I got to high school I played a lot of Stronghold 2 online; no fog of war meant it was easy to learn the meta before I even knew what a “meta” was. The community also generally played teams and the skill range varied a ton but didn’t have any ultra competitive players because there was no matchmaking service, just a GameSpy lobby. This was funny. By contrast, in the 11th grade my friends all got really into playing Age of Empires 2 and I hated it because two of them memorized build orders and would flatten everyone with siege onagers while we were still in feudal. I love watching Age of Empires II online but I hate playing it simply because the only way to be competitive is to treat it formulaically like chess.

You’re describing cooperative play. You could do this in World of Conflict and (if I recall correctly) Rise of Nations. It would have been cool in Age of Empires 2 since economic management is so much more involved, but in Rise of Nations you usually just set it and forget it, so the other player is basically just another set of eyes to respond to attacks.

Probably the first time I was crushingly disappointed by a game. Like units would not do anything, not even shoot unless specifically ordered to. And when you ordered a unit to attack, it would simply shoot from wherever it stood regardless of whether the target was even in range.

Unit pathing was also broken and I remember this being a thing with a lot of late 90s shovelware RTS games. The units would never go a direct path but move along the edges of impassable terrain like a blind man feeling his way against a wall. And often they would end up getting stuck. 7th Legion is another game I remember having really broken pathing AI.

This and Company of Heroes are definitely peak of the border pushing sub-genre. Not sure if I would call it the best RTS, but it's pretty great. I just wish it had more content for each age and the early ones lasted longer, while middle ones were a bit shorter. It feels like no matter the game settings, you will spend most of the time (and likely finish) around medieval one.

You're wrong because the online multiplayer scene was not the main thing for the genre, Starcraft was an outlier. The internet fucked a lot of genres back in the day, to the point that during the first couple of years of the 21st century it felt like every major game was going to be some sort of online only/MMO type thing. It is precisely the need to compete the thing that killed RTS games. Because the genre was almost entirely SP focused. Empire Earth was kind of a flop because the AI was "impossible" to beat due to it being hardcoded to cheat so it became a challenge for veteran players. People look back at old games and think they are hard because gamers were more intelligent but that's not the case, because the business model was built so you had to buy guides and call hotlines. And the number 1 complaint that devs and publishers received was that games were simply too difficult to complete, and most people dropped them. This was relevant because people who dropped a game were unlikely to buy the next one.

>3rd faction was full of hovering tanks with artillery, mobile shields etc, orange coloured
>very much played like ground control
>could command the drop ship that brought your units for a short time
>could upgrade it to stay longer and have better weapons\armour
Basically it was like if someone made ground control 3. In fact I believe it was hyped as its spiritual successor

Check raw temperature records then and do the tests yourself instead of being an ignorant moron. Pick a nearby weather station such as an airport, they are good because their data is public and consistent.
Go to
https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access
or search “NOAA Climate Data Online.” for instance
Download the daily temperature record (they let you export CSV files).
Plot the annual average for the past 50–100 years using Excel or Google Sheets.
You’ll see the trend yourself, local warming is directly measurable.

Unless you want some fancy book the magazines were cheaper in the long run. The only problem was that you might have had to wait a few months until the guide was printed to give the official guide time to sell.

Zero-K won and understood what RTS truly is. It's not spamming 400 afuses in the corner of map to build the most expensive units on repeat to have endless flashy explosion spam. Zero-K have battles which can have problems you need to solve that you can't just simply out eco of. They properly evolve without completely invalidating the current state of the battle.

Whereby the sequel (2+) is worse than the prequel (3+), even though both effectively butcher and retcon most of the lore established in the original. Not to mention the pruning and shitt friction lesa design that completely neutered the RPG elements.

Earth 2150 is just a blessed mess where they threw in every possible idea they had.
>day/night cycle, can turn unit lights on/off to affect unit visibility in exchange for movement speed
>full range of weather that affects your units, wind, snow, rain, thunderstorms, even meteor showers, one faction can even control these at will while the others get nukes
>units and buildings can be customized by mixing and matching chassis and weapons
>units have limited ammo and need to be resupplied in combat
>units gain experience and become stronger the more they fight
>malleable terrain, you can dig trenches and flatten ground, even build bridges over rivers
>there's a whole another map layer underground where you can dig tunnels
Just to name some. Always wondered what the hell they were thinking while designing the game, but it was cool as hell as long as you didn't care about small things like balance.

Unironically, paying too much attention to balance, because you have to have an attractive and competitive multiplayer, is the worst thing that happened to RTS. Most of the greatest games, like early C&C, have very loose approach to balance.

Not sure where you got that. A sense of balance, as in all of the races have a 50% win rate against any other race, is not necessarily good or bad, it depends on the spirit of the game. In Starcraft I can appreciate how no unit is useless and even the strongest ones have good counters. It serves the framework of the game where the campaign is basically a linear set of scenarios with no game state continuity between them. A sort of a puzzle game with clearly defined conditions.
In Earth though the game style is that of a realistic, immersive sandbox RTS. The scenario is very loose, you only have the end goal of collecting enough money and the campaign levels only serve that goal in the end. Units and money are transferrable between missions too, so in this sense balance is thrown out of the window because you can conceivably transport in 10 high-level air fighters in every level, or anything else you can think of. On the other hand, the game should still be winnable even if you take bad losses in one level. Despite the cavalier attitude to balancing this style more or less requires the game is fun, but the fun comes from different things than in a game like Starcraft. Don't take every comment in such a hostile manner.

If you're interested in the music behind the intro without the sfx, straight from the composer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXMdwdPEV1s
>A fan wrote to me and asked if I had the music for the Rise Of Legends opening cinema without sound effects. Since there was a possibility that the soundtrack might be released separately on CD, I was careful to archive everything from those amazing recording sessions with the Northwest Sinfonia. It really was a pile of cool but poorly implemented ideas. The weather actually had some gameplay effects (snow halves visibility, rain halves ground unit speed, wind slows aircraft.) but I don't remember the weather actually changing ever outside scripted events. I saw a beautiful snowstorm in ED tutorial and that's it.
Half of the game doesn't have any weather left to have. The snow especially lasts only for a few short missions in the beginning, especially since the clock urges you to hurry.

This is purely your retroactive projection. RTS games became a generally popular genre in the 90s because of their fun and entertaining single-player modes (C&C, Warcraft, Stracraft etc.).
(You) clearly care more about compfagging because it makes you feel superior to everyone around you, and that's fine, but you're making the mistake of thinking that your personal, anecdotal experience is the one single truth to the matter.

I remember your units could upgrade tiers like in Red Alert after getting many kills, their armor would turn silver and gold.
You could also play as the Romans on Skirmish multiplayer maps and make Roman cities and shit

>Imperivm: Great Battles of Rome
They have a similar name, but is not the same company.
This shit right here is what I played, what the fuck. It is a game made in Spain, I didn't even notice.
I remember the controls were clunky as fuck, but it had so much SOVL.

The linked article is about "Celtic Kings: Rage of War", known in Spain as "Imperivm: La Guerra de las Galias". It was developed by Haemimont Games, a studio based in Bulgaria.

It was strange, you could lose any number of the original campaign's missions and still be allowed to continue and even win the game if you send enough resources into space. But if you finish all the missions, you lose instantly, since there aren't any resources left for you to mine.

This game had an amazing atmosphere, from the opening and the ost, to the cold color palete and the wind effect on the trees. Coming from AoE2 I was blown away when I realized I could tilt the camera to see the sky, and some campaign sceneraios would even have day-night cycles.
That said, I always felt they fumbled the aesthetic for the later eras, industrial and contemporary looked boring and sterile compared to prehistory, classical and renaissance and space era was unimaginative. Pretty much the only good things about those eras were the sail ships and the mechas respectively. All the wonders being greek or ancient didn't help.
Because of this most of the time I would just stick to prehistory-renaissance rather than go all the way.

What was the name of this game where you were commanding a UFO(the cpu also had one) that could capture other buildings. You had a set of usable strikes and units were being generated automatically.

Am I the only person that liked 2? It had it's flaws bit it was still lot of fun and I liked the new gameplay features.
Such a shame Firefly are incapable of making a good 3d Stronghold and are just re-releasing the original line up, so much wasted potential.

I actually really liked Halo Wars on the 360 back in the day. Used to play 1v1 online all the time when I was a kid. Just wish it would have had a 3rd faction in the Flood.

I finished every campaign.
It's a game where themes and visuals are so unique that I am willing to put up with a lot of clunk.
Didn't like the sequel, there should never have even been one human faction, let alone two. At most it could have been a story of a few human hero units each allied with a different alien tribe. The cartoon-like interpretations of the alien factions didn't help. At least the pixel art still looked nice.

This game is so ahead of its time, still very playable today despite the graphics, mechanically it feels very smooth and modern, you can use WASD to move the camera around, physics are neat and skillshots are fun to pull-off.

Now that's hella cool (and complex.) temporal manipulation as a gameplay mechanic feels like editing a video in real time. I wonder what's their answer to the grandfather paradox though?

You die, if you kill an enemy factory in the past, the enemy should lose his units in the future.
But there's a hard cap on how far back you can go and it's not that long, it's an old game when memory was far more limited, I wonder how far back a modern game could go.
