To be honest, I never felt the DA2 companions were the "found family" some people describe them to be. You could stay none of them stays in the group because they like it, at least not all of them. Anders and Isabela are using Hawke for their own plans in their own ways, Merrill is an outcast in her own clan and is lonely as fuck in a city full of humans, Carver is begrudgingly family. The only ones I can see truly being part of the group are Bethany, Aveline (because her circumstances are almost identical to Hawke's), and Varric, who genuinely cares for Hawke and becomes your bro.

The funniest part about this scene to me is still that the mother was actually being very calm and reasonable in asking for very basic clarification on a term she clearly had no frame of reference for. But Taash starts freaking out and the music ramps up with her in the moment to push that this is a big escalating conflict.
