There will be no console like the PlayStation 2. It was the second addition to one of the most culturally impactful consoles in Europe, it was, for a time, just as culturally relevant. It was big in Japan, it was big in the US, it hit every market.
Sony at a time once tapped into something special, now they're really just the only "sensible" option a lot of the time. No one's buying an Xbox.

I'm a Nintendofag through and through (hell, my favorite console is the Wii U, so much that I own 2 of them). Stop pretending the DVD function was the main draw of the PS2, it wasn't. The PS1 install base was, everyone that had a PS1 wanted to upgrade to the PS2. I used to work on a brick and mortar game ship back in the day, customers didn't gave a shit about the DVD functionality, never even had someone asking me about it. As early as 2004 you could buy a cheap DVD player for half the price of a PS2 (the PS2 was still definitely a better deal still).
I'm not saying no one bought it because of the DVD, but some people are fucking insane throwing figures like 25%, which is fucking retarded.

I wish Sony and Microsoft would take a page out of Nintendo's playbook and stop competing in the hardware arms race. They should release consoles with underpowered hardware that are cheap to produce and cheap to purchase. Cutting edge hardware isn't even being used to its fullest potential anymore, now that the bloated, drag n' drop mess of an engine UE5 dominates the market.

Underpowered offerings across the gaming industry would be the kick in the ass publishers and developers need to produce innovative and inventive titles again, by working within the limitations of the hardware. I don't know if you guys have taken a look at Intel's latest budget laptop chips like the N100 or even the Zephyr APU from AMD, but they're impressive considering their power consumption. Why can't we have cheap sub-$300 consoles based on those kinds of processors? Or better yet, an ARM console based on a Snapdragon or Rockchip CPU?!
