Legends Arceus and SV were easily the most ambitious games in the series, a huge step up in terms of story and some great gameplay innovations, like making exploring and interacting with the world using your Pokémon seamless.
They're badly held back by bad technical performance and visuals, but the Switch 2 version of SV completely eliminates its performance issues, and there seems to be actual improvement on the development end with ZA's Switch version not suffering from SV's crippling problems.
Gen 10 will be the first games that have not suffered from the three-year dev cycle in over 15 years. If they can just deliver a game that looks and runs "good" and keeps going in the right direction it could easily be the best game in the series (and earn the sales to match).

I'm barely a pokefag and I only ever buy them at 40 bucks or less but a store near me had the switch 2 edition physical for 60, put around 40 hours in it, and I still haven't finished (that means getting the shiny charm). By the time I have Mega Dimension will be out.
The battles are fun, the characters are cute and the Pokémon real time combat is well realized with some clever things (detect and protect being parries)
Sure there's some questionable graphics but the eye adapts fast.

The simple fact is that almost all of the flaws it does have are superficial things that don't matter as much for the genre like graphics and framerate. Dexit was probably the biggest issue with pokemon and that's something every monster tamer does anyway.
On top of that, as gimmicky as it may be GF are still trying new things that other tamers generally don't. I mean, I like SMT but mechanically there's not much difference between 3, 4, 4a and 5, it's all in setting, story and roster.

They did good with the story part of Violet but the game felt so empty and region so bland. They didn't try at all to make the cities/towns fun. Gen 1 and 2 had more lively towns with actual things to do in them. The only sidequest I remember was the one where you break the seals. They really needed to focus on fleshing out their regions and adding fun things to do. If they had done that with Violet, it would've been a great game even with the bad performance.
