I really don't think it has anything to do with younger generations lacking maturity.
Rather, just 2 decades ago the internet used to be a hobby thing closely tied to computers, which at the time were relatively high IQ hobby.
Thus there was both at least some barrier to entry and people on the internet had to have interest in it and so people using it cared about keeping it clean.
Nowadays everyone not only has access to the internet but is even forced to use it for their daily lives, be it school or work. Not to mention really young kids that don't know any better being given full access by lazy parents.
Then they just start checking what else is on the internet just to waste time, they do not see any value in the internet itself so they don't care if they shit it up as long as it's at least a bit entertaining or beneficial to them in some way.
It's not that the IRL population has gotten worse overall, it's that before only people who cared used it because it had no use to anyone else. Now that everyone uses it, the typical retards simply drown out the same type of people that used to be majority of the old internet.
