During SHB there was an argument FFXIV was the most populated MMO out there. It peaked in popularity. Disenfranchised WoW players flocked to the game, as did a host of new players stuck at home in the pandemic. Yet for all that new found income, the game never adjusted. There was no more or less content, the patch cadence wasn’t increased, it actually decreased, I know that was result of the pandemic, but the extra resources could have been used to hire more people and mitigate or reverse that effect.

There is nothing wrong with FFXIV’s content, I loved it 10 years ago, it’s what hooked me, and it’s still fun. It’s just that after 10 years it’s stale. Patch notes and live letters don’t excite me because we can predict with 99% accuracy what we are going to get. For all its popularity and new revenue a few years ago. The game has somehow stayed stagnant and managed to not only lose the new players it gained l, but slowly bleed long time players such as me.

This, but also the changes made to jobs during shadowbringers were a delayed time bomb. Quite a few people sounded the alarm right away, but then everyone got lost in the excellent msq and similarly excellent post patch story and content.

Endwalker's patches being what they were meant people had to reckon with the game fundamentals absent exceptional content or story for the first time in a long time. Additionally, many of the sprouts who joined during the post SHB hype had been playing awhile at that point, so the fact that jobs, the vehicle through which you experience all battle content, had been hollowed out, made stupid proof, and drained of any flavor, started to be noticed by essentially everyone.

I'll never not be able to say this: DT had the ONE job of getting people hyped to see more after the closure of EW and it did the absolute opposite of that.

And even under the presumption that they thought they were doing that.. they still closed the story? The only sequel hook of the MSQ is "we got a key thingy now"?

I unsubbed a bit after that so no idea what the patches did and.. I don't know if I'll ever be back. I would like to, most definitely. But I need to hear some good stuff first and, even checking here regularly, that's not really the case?

Xiv was never dominant over WoW, even during the period you're on about. It was enjoying a flash of people trying out something else, spurred on by streamers and a few missteps by WoW.

Most of those players and streamers are now all back playing WoW and have been for a while now.

It was a very short period of increased activity and there's no way to quickly adjust to that, you have a roadmap and things already long in production that you can't just pivot off to try make something else. Plus if you do try, and you do make something else to keep the new crowd you risk alienating the original customers who liked the game the way it was.

Endwalker doesn't get enough hate in my opinion. Not the MSQ or the raid story but the actual patches were consistently terrible from 6.1 to 6.55. The time between patches was long, the content was not good, and the entire expansion fell into a rut of mediocrity with the end result being the most popular feature of endwalker was Adventure plates and Portraits. (which worked better in their beta)

They had the largest player base they ever had, and fumbled every single content release and took a damn long time to do it too. And they rewarded the loyalty of those who stuck around with the Dawntrail MSQ, then whoever managed to trudge through that was rewarded with the absolute shitshow of Occult Crescent.

So yes, I do think they squandered their opportunity to keep the game growing.

At level 50 you unlock a sphere grid, but until level 100 you only get one sphere per 5 levels. It's linear at this point just to introduce the system. After level 100 the entire grid unlocks and you earn another sphere every time you fill the exp bar again, in addition to unlocking special spheres for completing pieces of content that provide significant changes. The MSQ wasn't even bad. EW, DT, and ARR all had worse MSQs. But the important thing for SB's MSQ is that there was a sense that the world hadn't been completely conquered yet, the universe wasn't subservient to the WoL, characters still had lasting arcs, and there was more to explore. EW's "end everything, the universe is now barren and dead, every plot is now over" wrap up shouldn't have happened while SE was still planning on releasing more expansions.

FF16 should clue you in that as long as Yoshi P is in charge nothing will ever improve again. He actively hates player freedom and choice. The game should've been his time to flex his creative muscles but he just shit out another slop to taint the FF brand with.

All of Endwalker's content, pre and post-patch, is genuinely some of the worst content the game has ever had. It's insane to me that people praise it as much as they do, even if they do enjoy the story. Personally I think everything past Babel shits the fucking bed story-wise too. And no I'm not a Garloid.
I can understand hating DT's story though, but I at least had SOME fun with the MSQ content itself and the expert content was really fun and energizing to too.

There is still a real feeling difference between the classes like the draw system letting you flex as a gunbreaker until you are ready to spin to win versus being an unkillable vacuum dark knight. machinist have their ranged solo stuns or their sit still for 3 seconds as you snipe somebody compared to summoners shitting out AoE on everyone. I haven't played since 7.0 so they are in general a bit hazy, but the classes feel like the are actually filling different gradients in the holy trinity, instead of where you stand (optional).

Start with a small change to solo instances, make it so that you don't have to leave the party for solo instances, on top of that allow players in a party to enter the same solo instance so long as:
1. They are near the start of the instance
2. They have completed the prior steps leading up to that instance (Having completed the quest would count here)
3. The solo instance isn't one where you're playing as another character
This begins allowing players to progress the story as a group instead of having to constantly leave the party to progress only to rejoin. This makes it easier for players to bring in newer. In addition to that, I'd rework how level synch functions to be purely a modification of damage. It'd make it so you keep all abilities you'd have at your normal level, but the damage would be severely reduced. Both of these functions would encourage veterans to bring aboard newer players.

It's been mentioned aplenty, but Jobs need a major overhaul. Start with limiting them to level 100 and give them a core mechanic that is essential to the Job that features as their core identity. This should tie into their identity as a job as well. Then you introduce some kind of 'variation' system as other anons have mentioned, allowing the altercation of that core mechanic, changing how that Job feels. I'll use BLM as an example. The entire concept of BLM is a high damage, stationary mage. Now imagine if LeyLines, instead of a basic button you press, was a natural passive that occurs if you stand in one location for X period of time, increasing as a percentage over time, but dropping quickly if you start moving. Have that as a baseline, and then for variants you could have something like the Leyline Buff decreasing it's max % increase, but allowing other casters to benefit when standing in the circle. This creates unique interactions with other Jobs based on the Job's role.

The entire system here needs to be revamped. Let element types be a thing, let physical and magical damage be a thing, let bosses suffer effects from debuffs that aren't just DoTs or affecting damage. Let them get stunned, slept, Taunted, anything. Same thing with the players, allow them to use buffs that aren't just shields or Damage increases. Let there be Buffs/Debuffs to GCD/CDs, let there be protections/weakness to element or damage types. It doesn't have to be useful in every fight, or even in a large amount of them, but giving useless/flavor buttons or skills can feel good. Let PLD have better defense against Astral damage for example.

It's gotten harped on, everyone knows what needs to be done. Make it so bosses leave the rigid A>B>C structure where you know exactly what they're gonna do. You can have fixed mechanics at certain points, but if a boss fight is almost entirely scripted with the only difference being whether the 3rd attack is in then out or out then in, then it's going to get incredibly boring Incredibly fast.

Add stuff to it that you'd never see if you didn't wander around. Let there be occasional, randomly appearing chests that give Dyes or Gil or maybe even a treasure map if you're lucky. Design maps as though you're never going to be able to fly through them, and add small locations that aren't marked on the map for players to see. No quest that takes you there, no fate explaining the lore, just something simple that you'll wander past and think about or take a moment to look at. Also revamp fates, let hard versions spawn like in the phone game. Let players mount in cities, and in general stop designing with teleportation in mind. You shouldn't want players teleporting everywhere in cities, you want it to be interesting/burdenless enough that players choose to simply walk to their destination more often than not.

Final Fantasy XIV was not going to retain the influx of Wold of Warcaft players because people went to FFXIV because the quality of WoW went down not because FFXIV was better. FFXIV main weakness was always the combat system. WoWs combat is faster, responsive and dynamics. FFXIV's combat is slower, more structured and choreographed. FFXIV is lacking in open world content and group based activities. They primarily cater to hard core raiders while ignoring casual progression content. Players have been suggesting for years that every time the developers release savage content they should release open world content as well. Maybe each zone has exploration quests as an alternative form of progression where there is an instance version of the zone like if all the Dawntrail zones were place in a large public instance.

I can’t say for sure but didn’t they move money from 14 onto other projects? Most of which failed miserably to my understanding. So, yes, they milked the cash cow and then diverted funds from 14 into other bad investments which not only failed but ended up negatively impacting their main revenue generator, ie. people quit and are quitting in droves.

I used to love SE. I appreciated the transparency from Yoshi. Not anymore, though. Too many poor choices, lack of quality content, and overbearing cash shop items. These damn greedy companies just keep trying to expand and extract more but end up neglecting their primary sources of success. Thats not specific to SE, but they’re the example that resonates most closely with me.

I loved my Hard version of dungeons before they stopped making them. People try to say Criterion is basically Hard mode but it's not, Variant dungeons are not intuitive and they don't flow well, most people completed the different routes for the variants by having to look at a guide that was the rule not the exception whereas using a guide for hardmode was the exception not the rule.

I'm probably a minority, but I find the idea of just hopping from world to world/shard to shard for expansions really boring and 'episode of the week' esk. I wouldn't mind it as side content like in an actually fully realized not half baked Cosmic Exploration mode, or if they did one expansion in a sort of SB style where we deal with multiple at once, once, but otherwise multiple other-world expansions after ShB feels like a cop out because they've lost all creativity to do anything related to the source.

It is true. Maybe their primary intentions weren't to make the jobs easy to play exactly, but they for sure went on a quest to make all jobs viable and all comps viable in all raids. While at the same time making all jobs of the same role do a very similar amount of damage.
