Any time anything remotely resembling an idiom or set phrase comes up, it is wrong with alarming consistency, not to mention reading like an amateur's anime subtitling job. The icing on the cake is that this awful, inaccurate, awkard translation was the product of 10+ years of "hard work" that, frankly, doesn't show.

In another similar example as FFVI above, this one tried to fix problems that simply did not exist and wound up creating new problems all throughout by trying to stick "to the letter" to a fault. Just another example of a game that didn't need a full overhaul, but just an editing/cleanup pass to catch the actual errors (and yes, Illusion of Gaia had plenty of legitimate mistakes of its own, but this was not helped by the fan retranslation).

I must disagree, it makes NO sense to hamfist some random accent in inconsistent ways to NPCs. By doing this, you lessen the overall readability and world crafting of the game. The whole point of everyone speaking the same is for the sake of readability for the player. The whole point of having an accent is for regional differences. However, when those regions aren't remotely consistent with where you're dropping the accent, it just comes across as globohomo logic which would make 0 sense in a video game where only so many people travel in an RPG. I can't believe they pulled this same shit in the remake of DQ3 after the complaints of DQIV all those years back, as there were unnecessary and unreadable accents and accents were definitely not consistent with region as some were reused in some towns that were nowhere near each other. Accents are contagious, it makes no sense that a whole continent without accents should have a town with accents. Another good example is Xenoblade 2, having British and American accents together thematically make no sense. Pick one or the other, UNLESS the point is to show off diversity or regional accent, but in that case, it must be regional and not sound like broken English spoken by a Mexican or a slav who is here 'just because' and we "needed" to spice up dialogue. There aren't "accuracy" issues with the critical parts of the message in Honeywood-era Dragon Quest. Technically, they are high-effort, high-quality localizations that clearly have plenty of attention and care put into them.
The issue is that this effort is also clearly misdirected and is pumped into things that wind up being strange localization choices. While it definitely gives each title and its areas/characters distinctive identities, many would agree that it reaches into being overbearing more so than charming.
Things started out OK with Dragon Quest VIII and it ultimately worked well there due to the inclusion of voice acting to help "sell" the accents (which were also not laid on as thick or as badly), but it started getting absurd when characters began speaking in English with Cyrillic characters replacing Latin glyphs.

Yes, anon, this happens when you insert your "literal" script into the game, start playing through it, and realize that often, the "literal" text doesn't read properly against what is actually happening on screen, for one reason or another.
You can write a literal, technically correct translation of a line, then bump into it in-game and realize that something that makes sense in-context in Japanese does not work without tweaking/expansion/alteration in English.
People exaggerate, overblow, and take out of context what Vorlick said in his interview about "throwing out the script" when in reality, you do this all the time in translation/localization out of necessity.
