The thing about VII is that it IS boring, it is drawn out, it is filled with a bunch of random individual island arcs that have nothing to do with anything alongside actual plot important ones. But that's also VII's identity; it's the kind of game you go in for a rich and dense world but a super tedious and rather goal-absent adventure for the majority of the experience. You start changing and tuning that, and you lose that essence. The 3DS version did good and bad things in trying to tune that, and yet it's pretty much universal among those that have played both versions that you lose a bit of that adventure and depth, no matter how shit it was, when it gets either completely removed or turned into a basic fetch quest in a game filled to the brim with them already.

The best case scenario for Reimagined is to cut content and remove things without it FEELING like there's something blatantly missing. Because the 3DS version was kind of so awkwardly slapped together that you could feel the cuts and weirdness. It's being built off of the PS1 structure with elements of 3DS and beyond, so we have to wait and see a bit longer, but this can be either at least a solid experience that makes the game palatable for new players and something interesting and properly condensed or "rewarding" for veterans, or a butchered remake that simply loses VII altogether in favor of trying to be so palatable that it's no longer going to be VII proper.

Yuji Horii has spoken in retrospectives about how he's regretted making 7 as long as it was. DQ7 is the least cometed game in the series

Just the main game is crazy. They took a 20 hour game (15 hours of which is grinding) and made it as long as DQ4 or 5. With no grinding unless you want to do optional post game stuff. Every time I thought the game was getting close to the end, there was another story arc or thing to search.

In the 3DS remake, there's some dialogue where Maribel basically lets it slip he likes her. A few actually. She just plays them off as a joke later. And some NPCs comment about how they're such a good couple.

It's the typical Tsundere shtick. And telling the player they're going to get together without explicitly showing it. Hopefully the next remake will do even more. But more importantly, hopefully this new remake won't fucking take her out of your party for 30 hours.

There's lots of areas where they could refine the dialogue to be shorter. But the problem isn't actually the dialogue. It's the formula of the game. You have to go to the past and solve whatever the islands problems are. Then go back to the present and solve yet another problem in the same area. And many of these story arcs are the longest in DQ history, until Dragon Quest XI came along.

The problem of the game is pacing. If you total up all the dialogue sequences, it's probably only 10-12 hours. Out of an 80-100 hour game. That tells you how much backtracking and repetition the gameplay has. I mean, you don't even get your last two party members until like 50-60 hours into the game. And then you have to grind them for hours to get their jobs up...it's just bad pacing.

Old DQs (and 11) typically went like this

>go to town
>shit wrong, can't get shit you need
>fix shit, fight boss
>get shit you need which helps you get closer to the big bad, usually leading you to another town to repeat the process
In 7 you're never truly moving forward narratively, you're making a lot of lateral narrative movements that conveniently give you more fragments to repeat the process. To that you might say big whoop, it's all the same but the key distinction here is that in old DQ and 11, you're accomplishing specific feats and getting certain items to gain more power and influence to eventually fight the big bad, while in 7 9/10 times you're just getting more fragments with no real narrative pull, and it's also handily the longest DQ which makes the whole process feel even more dragged out.

The problem is 11 feels like you're moving ahead. Only for each act to regress everything. Not even to square 1, but even farther back then you were before. And then dues ex machina fix everything halfway through act 3. So it's really not much better than DQ7. In many ways, I'd say it's worse.

If the side events in 7 were paced better, it would be fine. It would be like Dragon Quest VIII, which most events are narratively separated from the main quest. But the stories are interesting on their own. And don't make you backtrack/repeat stuff for 10 hours like DQ7 does.

I played the original PS1 release (no 3ds remake shit) and I loved it. At first it felt like a slower DQ6 but unlike that game were most of the towns had no connection when shit started to get interconnected I was like, HOLY SHIT THEY TALKING ABOUT ME!
