Kinda funny how with the Index controllers, they made a big deal out of being different from and supposedly better than Oculus Touch and the more standard VR controller design- you wear them instead of holding them, finger tracking instead of grip buttons, and so on.
And now with the Frame controllers it's basically

4k 120hz can require UP TO 48gbs, with the actual requirement varying depending on the bitrate being used. USB 4.0 can handle 40gbs. The VR screen is only 2k though, and it has that eyetracking thing to optimize the bitrate, so the USB is absolutely not going to be a bottleneck.

Maybe valve's strategy is to make a cheap standalone VR headset and then releasing HL3 in VR to bolster the VR market
Currently the biggest problem with VR is that the market is bad so good devs don't make games for it, since statistically you'll just make a lot less money making a VR game than a regular game.
Anonymous No.725660389 [Report] >>725664036
Unfortunate that they seemed to lose all interest in pushing VR forward. This feels like a headset that could have come out 3 or 4 years ago with the way that it just barely matches the Quest.
I don't know where you guys are getting black and white passthrough from, but I seriously dread that being the case.
Top of the line passthrough could have absolutely made this thing essential. Imagine having a full-fidelity tether to your PC, running downstairs to take a piss as your headset switches to on-board graphics, and coming back to your room where it seemlessly switches back to PC power. That alone would have been a big enough step beyond the competition to be worth while

It's a PC. It's them 12 years later righting the wrong they did with "Steam Machines" (even sweeping the old Steam Controller aside and not naming their new controller "Steam Controller 2[.0]").

The old Machines were third party stuff that was VASTLY overpriced and not Valve mandated (so all of them could have different GPU/CPUs and price costs).

This is Valve taking the Deck's lessons (low price, standardized hardware under them) and using it for a "round 2" attempt.

I think this may work for getting console gamers on-board if 1) the price point is good [Valve takes a bath on the Decks and has stated they're ok with that] and 2) PC ports finally get a "Deck" (and thus a Machine) optimization setting(s). Something stuff like Cyberpunk 2077 eventually patched in.

That last one will be the game changer if Valve is able to pull it off, because PC gaming then becomes "you need the minimum of XYZ hardware to reach PS5-6-7+ console generation hardware minimum for 30FPS" which would be HUGE for PC gaming in terms of getting developers to finally optimize their shit again and PC ports being somewhat better.

My only problem is that the formfactor means the machine isn't upgradable (the old machines were but the ITX sizing meant it was a PITA to do). But since this really targeting Deck and conole-gamer audiences, that won't be a huge deal if Valve is able to do an upgrade on the hardware in 5 years like consoles.

Desktop mode will likely be similar to Steam Deck, where you just switch sessions, and the improvements will likely just come from using more powerful hardware connected to a larger display.

It might convince more developers to release flatpak of appimages of desktop software. They're already a must have for full-screen software thanks to Deck.

I just watched the Linus Tech Tips video on it, apparently the dongle uses 6GHz for faster data transfer to eliminate latency (and avoid the 2.4 and 5GHz bands used by wifi routers), and the headset has dynamic resolution scaling based on the eye tracking, so it will put maximum detail wherever your eye is actually looking but the rest of the image will be lower quality (because your eyes aren't focused there anyway), and apparently it's RIDICULOUSLY GOOD at this

Of all the things to criticize Valve for, I don't think their engineering is one of them, they have the best people for pretty much everything because they are a private company that makes ludicrous amounts of money and therefore only hires the best, so if they say they've figured out some black magic technological breakthrough that makes a wireless headset with a medium resolution panel look good and have no latency, then I believe them

The mini PC console thing doesnt anything a shitty costco gaming laptop can't do, the controller is a straight downgrade from a $50 gamesaar, and VR is still a meme. Is it bad I'm more hyped for HL3/HLX whatever they're calling it after all the references they made?

I hope so too, I only started playing with Linux in the last couple of months, and it's a bit of a headache having to negotiate severeal different ways to install software and with no unified installer (or commonly accepted standard)

some things are on the discover store, some things are flatpak only and require you to install the repositories using the terminal, some are just a .deb file that you can install like an .exe, and it feels like every company or developer just picks at random which one they want to use.

If a big name company liek Valve sets a standard, then it might inspire others to follow and work on their Linux versions more seriously, as well as giving users an easier time of attaining software

It looks like Valve is releasing all 3 at once while trying to make VR as simple and easy to use as possible, so more people adopt it and they also buy something else with it, like the steam deck or steam machine to accompany it, not just 1 steam product.

Maybe the Steam Frame is testing ground for the Steam Deck 2.
It could be like the next evolution of handhelds and VR headsets. Valve has managed to make all of this compact enough to make it work on Steam Deck, Frame and Machine, wirelessly, so now they can turn the Steam Deck 2 into a VR headset that becomes a handheld as well, like the switch, but from handheld to VR, instead of handheld to dock.
A simple frame clip to wear with a strap for the back of the head that you can easily carry on your pocket, and your handheld snaps in place like the joycons. The steam controllers detach form the screen and become like the Frame's controllers, or you can snap them together to make it look liek something similar to the joycons put together or the new steam controller. the screen will be smaller to make it work with the VR headset gimmick and can divide into two screens when it snaps on the Frame. It can totally work, all 3 in 1.

What it REALLY means is that the headset will be super easy to develop for. We will likely have perfect emulators and things on day one, on top of PCVR games that arent on Steam but wouldn't be able to run their exe on Linux otherwise. Probably quest exclusives ported over too if we are lucky

Kritia is already on the Store. There is other Linux software on the store as well, but Steam is for PC gaming mostly and software sales have never been significant on Steam.

In any case, we've been waiting for Steam Arch since the 'Eck launched. "Valve Time™" has been forever with that, since Steam Debian ("SteamOS 1-2") was 2013 to like 2019 and they never released that version for builders or in general.

It's also why the "Holo" community version of the Arch attempt is a thing. I don't expect Valve to release Steam Arch ever and you're going to have to install Arch or the other forks of it (Endevour, etc.) for a Deck-like OS.

I heavily doubt it. The quest 3 is sold at breaking or at a net loss, banking on people buying from facebook/meta's storefront or data collection from the metaverse. Unless valve does orchestrates some wicked scheme beyond planning on people on steam buying VR games, it would probably just plainly be more expensive than the quest 3- basically just being a pcvr headset that happens to be standalone with extra bells and whistles.
I think someone at valve vaguely mention it would cost less than an Index, which doesn't exactly invoke confidence for that.

I huffing copium and hoping that we see at least a couple games coming from them on TOP of half life, along with a third party showcase and Source 2 dev tools. I mean they really should, ought to be false advertising in some way at least.

Switch OLED had a full RGB grid.

You can blame COVID and the lockdowns for that. Every game studio was massively disrupted by that, so nobody started new projects or tried anything risky during that timeframe. That strangled the VR reniassance Alyx was supposed to start in the crib.

No, and it never will be and let me tell you why:
Anime proportions look FUCKED UP at a fundamental level when you actually see it in stereo, like this picture. The eyes and head look utterly inhuman, and the flat skin dissuades you from wanting to touch it. This is why Western VR remains ahead, and you'd have best luck learning how to use Virt-A-Mate.

You can, or you can blame the "PS Vita Effect" where nobody wants to buy a headset because there are no games, and nobody wants to spend money developing games because nobody owns a headset.

Something's got to give. Valve can't wait around for someone to do the job for them anymore. Especially since the rest of the industry is migrating to AR/passthrough quality of life stuff instead of gaming, while this new headset seems to be exclusively for gaming first.

this is important because it provides a widely used spec for devs to target against when making their games

it's been the issue with PC gaming forever but having a "lower bound" of relevant hardware to support has never existed before, this gives devs the ability to say "if you have a steam machine you can run my game" and anyone with a better computer can obviously run it better.

shit on it all you want, but its open architecture and hopefully decent pricing will change how Microsoft and Sony are looking at their PC releases. If this thing is going to run PS5 and Series X games better or the same as these base consoles they are going to start fucking bleeding software sales.

Then they are dumb. There is no high end VR market. Even Apple has poor sales.

They have better chances than the Samsung one that just released, but keep in mind that has OLED and this is the same as the Quest 3. Most people can't play VR without getting nausea. So it leads to short play periods. Plus I think the 5070 ti is what you need for a good experience, so even more money and less of a market.
