Steam Deck's 420€ and if you replace the CPU with a much more common 7640U, remove the screen, battery and controls (if it doesn't ship with a controller) you could offset the cost of a bad yield 7600 and 8 gigs of GDDR6. $300-400, might buy depending on what we find out about it.
$400+, it depends.
I'm already pretty invested into steam and the pc ecosystem in general, so it's appealing. Most of my gaming time is spent on /v/ complaining about modern games, so if it can run a browser and the games I already have, then I should be set for a while.
My big gripe with steam deck and the reason I haven't bought one, is repairabity, specifically the battery being glued to the screen. If the gabecube has a similar repairability limitation, I might skip it.

It has 16gb system ram, so DDR4 or DDR5. That's not for games. It has 8gb GDDR6 for games. 8gb wouldn't be so bad if it was a 1080p machine but they're marketing it with 4k buzzwords and there's no way in hell anyone's running the vast majority of modern games at 4k high textures with 8gb. RT requires a ton of vram too. The consoles have about 12gb memory dedicated to games which is far more than 8gb and even then they still use lower texture quality and assets.

System ram and video ram aren't the same thing. One is significantly slower and has less bandwidth than the other. If you run out of video ram and the game has to use system ram you'll get massive performance degradation. And Linux or not doesn't change the fact many modern games, especially at 4k, use over 8gb of vram. Some games don't even expose entire settings in the menu if you don't have at least 12gb vram like indiana jones. Even putting all that aside, the GPU in the steam machine is dogshit and is built on the same architecture that was widely panned as being dogshit when it released like 3 years ago.

I did the math and it would cost me more money to convert my existing PC to SFF than it would be to buy a PS5. I use it as a HTPC connected to a TV. Staring at a giant black brick is fucking annoying. Hauling it around is even more annoying. Even getting to the ports when in enclosed spaces is annoying because I have to lift and turn the thing. At this point I'd rather downgrade and sell it off. I don't use the power anyway and it's only a 4070. Most of my time is spent playing anime coomer games these days. I play AAA very rarely. Even my Steam Deck has enough power for me, I only ever desired more power when playing certain UE5 games like Silent Hill f or MGS Delta.

However, if it's $500, I'd genuinely kick it around as an option for something I could take on the go. The local game shop has TVs you're free to use, and this would be perfect for doing computer game nights there, or a fighting game tourney.

My guess about their strategy would be the following:
>the Steam Deck was made to challenge the expanding PC handheld market that was not that greatly organized
>the Deck probably was on par with their expectations
>now they're marketing this more towards the console audience, as to entice them to join an already big platform (a lot of games are here, and they also transfer from generation to generation of consoles, while Sony, MS and Nintendo work a lot to uphold backwards compatibility)
As PC enthusiasts it doesn't make any sense, but as someone who only wants to dip into the ecosystem, it is much more strramlined and looks way more friendly, and given the Windows shenanigans, this may just as well either put a dent into the Xbox and Windows brand, or be a massive flop. Your build has 32GB RAM (which is way overpriced atm), realistically 16GB RAM is worth $80 which is what I paid for mine 3 years ago. So you can shave $120 off there.
Arc B580 is also a 12GB card and way stronger than the gimped 7600 so shave another $50 off.
Your case, PSU etc are also more expensive since steam machine is going to be rated like 200W (30W CPU + 110W GPU). So those would also come down a bit.
Realistically the steam machine system should cost $500ish, but Valve should take a loss on it if it wants to push steamOS market share which is the main thing they are trying to achieve.

Some kernel level anti-cheats can be run on a linux system, like BattlEye which Dune Awakening uses, but it's not going to be nearly as effective on a linux system from what I've gathered, which is why a lot of devs just don't allow the AC to be run on a linux machine in the first place.
Rockstar is a great example of this, they added BattlEye for GTA Online and refused to add linux support, they straight up lied and said "BattlEye doesn't support Linux".
The point being, if the devs have potential to lose sales/revenue because of hackers, they are not going to make their anti-cheats linux compatible.
Obviously if a large majority of the PC players suddenly switched to Linux however, they would have to come up with some sort of workarounds.

valve already has a category for games that specifically play nice with the deck
all you have to do as a developer is to introduce a settings level that will accommodate playing on the gabecube

>they said that the cost is around entry level PCs
I just read that too. Which really worries me now. No way am I willing to pay like 800 dollars for a severely gimped PC. On the other hand, they haven't announced prices yet, so hopefully they are monitoring the community and seeing what people are saying before coming through a price that seems more reasonable.

Strix isn't cheap because amd didn't manufacturer them in bulk. Rumour is Medusa Halo is gonna be in both next gen console late '26 or early '27. amd is gonna manufacture a lot and they'll be in everything from laptops to handhelds, they'll go down in price. This Steam machine is under powered and in a year a new minimum standard for power is gonna be set for the next 5-8 years because console power has always been the benchmark devs run their games against. Even if this thing costs as much or a little less than a PS5 right now it's a shit deal.

Keep in mind Valve is buying the hardware in bulk, it is 'withered' hardware none of the Windows OEMs wanted to buy.
Also Valve doesn't have to pay the Microsoft tax, either as a per-system fee, or as a performance penalty.

The whole point of the new Steam Machine is to give buyers a cheap point of entry to Steam, and also to SteamVR when bundled with the headset.

they know the next console iteration is going to be a total fucking meme, look at these ps5 pro vs ps5, most normies cant tell a difference. the real problem is that unoptimized UE5 slop that rapes hardware is becoming more and more ubiquitous and this machine is not going to be able to weather that storm but hopefully that forces developers to not make unoptimized shit

Valve is bringing the SteamMachine back?
Fucking why?
Last time it was a terrible failure, do they really think it'll work this time?

>not just a modest cheapish version for 450ish then a high end uber tier at 900

The Steam Machine has a better chance of working this time around to be fair. The market has changed greatly. The only thing they have to do now to land it right, is get it at a reasonable price point. If it's cheaper than current consoles, it'll sell very well. That's a big if of course.

That does seem to make a lot of fucking sense. I've been thinking about this for the last hour and the only way to really enjoy the SM as a console would be if you need it to be connected to your PC. It's not at all positioned to be a competitor to the Playstation.

this might be related to what discussions they had with AMD
you can use it still but just not on an official proton build so you need to install something like proton-ge and put it to the same directory where protons go to in steam and it works the same

its most likely just that AMD doesnt want to get into this situation where someone could advertise that RDNA3 can run FSR4

>Valve is bringing the SteamMachine back?
They already did with the Steam Deck, and actually calling the new Steam Machine the Steam Machine is good branding.
Vulkan, RadV, and Proton were game changers for PC Gaming on GNU/Linux based OSes, and Microsoft has placed their own platform in End of Life.
Also there are only two SKUs the base version, and the version with a larger drive installed.

if its anything like the steam deck, just being able to run almost every emulator is a massive plus for the hardware. it seems like new generations are insanely into older games now. if this thing is already cheaper than a ps5 but offers emudeck its probably enough to get alot of people on board
