it's AMD shared architecture, I dunno the name for it, that works more like a playstation does where RAM and VRAM can work together and somewhat interchange / be shared, not to mention it's not dealing with overhang from WIndows, so it's theoretically capable of punching above its supposed weight.

you should probably shut up if you don't know what you're talking about.
all 3 platforms share components, architecture and design with modern PCs, instead of shit like cell/emotion processing and the like, and they run PowerPC, which basically means Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft (especially Microsoft) are effectively running closed-garden PCs with their own operating systems. the difference between a PC and a Console game is quite literally just release and optimizations/settings. you think they support a mouse and keyboard just because some drivers are there?

the only segregation between platforms is 100% artificial.

If this thing is priced right like $299 or $399 it’ll be very appealing as the ps6 will likely be $599 or $699 with nextbox around $1200. Playing mostly the same games granted at lower visuals but it’ll have mods and allow you to fiddle with settings to get your desired output.

The controller looks awful but that’s a small issue when you can use brand for it. Plus you’ll likely be able to stream through GeForce Now like the deck.

If you're looking for something portable, a laptop will generally always be weaker because they use special laptop-optimized versions of hardware that are inherently less powerful. If you're using a laptop more like a PC that just happens to be cheaper to get pre-assembled, then just get a prebuilt PC or Steam Machine at that point.

You can actually play a lot of games at 1440p with 6GB of VRAM, maybe not shit like RDR2, Cyberpunk, and shit like that, but if you look at the other 75% of games; they're not using more than 6GB of VRAM probably.

devs are pretty much always going to target averages anyway
a good engine will of course use more VRAM than the target, for better performance, but a good engine would also be able to make use of host-visible memory, which is going to be much more performant on an APU than it is on a normal PC, thanks to the shared memory
if it's anything like how they did the steam deck, the delineation between RAM and VRAM becomes a lot thinner

You won't find any issue with most games because they either accounted for it or the engine itself handless the issue.
Basically you'll find countless parts of the environment to either be textureless or they'll pop in extremely near you, it's only a few games where running out of VRAM will tank the performance or straight up refuse to run.

You don't need more for console tier settings.
I think you could make the criticism that it's coming out too late (over 5 years after Xbox and PS5) but then again games will still be developed around current-gen consoles (and now the steam machine) for years after the release of PS6 and next Xbox.

Planning on running AI inference on it or something? 8gb is most likely fine. You have to consider this isn't a high-end gaming system. It's not going to be running shit at 4k 120fps, so it won't need a lot of VRAM to store high-res textures and cache frames or whatnot. Also, since it's an OS dedicated 100% to gaming, the system resources will stretch much further than a bloated Windows install.

I suggest you wait and see. I think it will be fine, though. I don't think they're lying when they said they tested it and it was fine for most games.

Upscaling to 4k is a perfectly viable way to play. The problem is that the GPU in this Gaben system has the performanc similar to something like an RX6600 which is a card that revolves around 60fps in games today.. at 1080p output + when they don't have raytracing. I would imagine that the system uses a laptop styled motherboard with an embedded GPU and laptop styled SO-DIMM memory that can be upgraded and a M.2 drive. Guys, these products are peripherals that are intended to support your current PC.
Anyone who wants Steam-focused hardware already has at least 1 desktop or laptop they play their games on, which is going to be more powerful than anything Valve could logically produce at a mass scale especially if it's somebody's gaming desktop.
They are basically ways to expand your PC gaming in a convenient way.

Let's say hypothetically it IS $300-400. How does this affect the market in general?

If you think about it from the perspective of a parent, it's a lot cheaper than a PS5 or a Switch 2 so there's savings to be had. It's the kind of situation where I feel like you won't truly see the effects of it for a decade or so, as kids who grow up on this thing become teens/adults who then buy whatever followup console Valve makes to this. I don't think it would make too big of a splash now because most people who want consoles have consoles and a ~$50-100 change won't make the difference between buying one or not for most consumers. Then again, it might depend on the "big" games for the console, a parent buying a child a console for their birthday or Christmas would want to get them whatever the next big AAA game is that the kid wants, and if Steam doesn't have that then that could be an issue. I wonder if they released this at the opportune time, or if a few more years of getting huge games on PC would make a bigger difference.

It's a + for VRAM and RAM for a reason, they work to share between each other thanks to how the architecture works. We don't know how extensive that actually is and it probably isn't a magic solution, but 8GB isn't quite "right". Combine that with being able to upgrade the RAM with some disassembly and it might be able to do more than an old 8GB card on its own.

Lol most normalfags will use upscaling if they need performance. In fact that's what most games default to when auto-detecting your settings, and when you change the graphics preset in newer slop it also alters your upscaling factor.
>>725698684
4k is such an absurd amount of pixels that basically all upscaling looks acceptable with it, and it's way more viable than upscaling to 1080p/1440p. FSR2/3 and XESS are mediocre with it, I'd only ever use Quality or higher (66%+) and even that will still look worse than native. DLSS2-3 is pretty solid at 4k but I wouldn't go below Balanced (58%). FSR4 and DLSS4 upscaling are great with 4k, you can generally drop down even to Performance (50%) without a noticeable loss of visual quality - sounds like bullshit on paper but if you try it you'll see.

FSR4 isn't innately more demanding, it's just that the RTX hardware shit is everpresent on all RTX cards from 2000 to 5000 series so it can run the upscaler consistently across the GPU generations. Whereas FSR4 depends on instructions sets specifically made for specialized hardware present on the RDNA9000 cards but NOT present on RDNA5000-7000 cards, so the older cards have to emulate FSR4 which incurs a cost.

It's a cost-cutting measure, because they want this to be competitive with or undercutting consoles.
Switch 2 which launched this year uses the same architecture as Nvidia's RTX 30-series cards from 2020. Newer would be better, but wouldn't be only $450

okay retard question, the PS3 had OtherOS on it and allowed Linux. Because it used a hypervisor it doesn't really change the argument?
also didn't realize the legal case actually got resolved
>The feature was controversially removed by Sony since system firmware update 3.21, released on April 1, 2010.[2] A class action lawsuit was filed against Sony on behalf of users, but was dismissed with prejudice in 2011 by a federal judge. The judge stated: "As a legal matter, ... plaintiffs have failed to allege facts or articulate a theory on which Sony may be held liable."[3] However, this decision was overturned in a 2014 appellate court decision[4] finding that plaintiffs had indeed made clear and sufficiently substantial claims. Ultimately, in 2016, Sony settled with users who had installed Linux or had purchased a PlayStation 3 based upon the availability of OtherOS.[5]
>The settlement was then rejected in February 2017 by judge Yvonne Gonzalez, citing two problems: the lawyers' high fee percentage, and the users' difficulty in collecting.[6][7][8] Sony responded in September 2017, offering each member of a single proposed class up to $65. This is a change from $55 and $9 payouts for members of two separate classes in the prior proposal.[9]

Stop being retarded.
It innately is not being competitive with other consoles because it's sold on a digital only PC games storefront. If Valve wanted to compete with Sony and Nintendo, you would see this announced at the Super Bowl (hyperbole should be obvious), not via a store page update.

Also it’ll only be sold through said website, they’ll miss out on the in store shelf space that Switch, PlayStation and Xbox have had for decades. Someone out shopping might happen across a console and remember someone wanted it for their birthday, graduation etc. There’s something to be said for having the ability to buy something on the spot when you want over waiting 2-3 days for shipping.

Also is it me or is there no guest checkout for hardware? If I don’t have a Steam account already you are making it very annoying just to get one in my hands.

Indeed this is a machine aimed at people who already have a steam library. It gives them an alternate way to access games they already own and possibly even be an upgrade to their current set up (even if it does on paper cost more than say a PS5, they are bringing a bunch of games they already own). I don't think it's going to be a thing that causes people to jump ship to the PC market if they weren't already interested in it.

>It's not uncommon to see people talking about their Steam Deck and mentioning that they have no other gaming PC.
Consider the biases of someone who talks a lot about the Steam Deck this long after release.
It would almost certainly be someone who uses it a lot. And most of the people who use it a lot would be people who either don't have a PC or are functional NEETs.
The actual market for gamers without a PC that want to get into PC gaming and wiling to make a steam account and buy Steam hardware is incredibly small, and this isn't my "hatred" for the idea, it's that Valve isn't thinking of it as an entrypoint either.
At launch, the Steam Deck was $399. For 64GB. On relatively ancient hardware, ran most PS4 titles like shit, and that was without the Dock, which meant it was more expensive than the Switch with technically less upfront utility, and abysmal storage.
The 'actual' Steam Deck, the 256GB and 512GB models were $529 and $649 respectively, full home console prices. These are not entry level platforms, they are niche consumer platformers for people who are already engrained into the Valve ecosystem.
