So, I love playing the black mage in XIV, but I get the impression that in most, if not all others FF, the black mage is not as insanely strong as it is in FFXIV?
If you don't play it, I'm talking... sorta like a one-man artillery piece. Fairly long casting times, deals a LOT of damage, and, in the lore, draws ether from a destroyed reflection to have unlimited MP.

Meanwhile black mages in other games feel more like... well, like in D&D, more like utility support that can adapt to whatever the enemy is weak to.

Mages in single player RPGs are awesome in the middle third of games. In the early game they don't have much MP so you save spells for more powerful enemies / boss fights. And in the end, melee characters tend to have such good equipment / abilities that they can keep pace damage-wise without needing to worry about resource management.

But in the middle section of games, spellcasting / exploiting elemental weaknesses makes mages the kings of damage output. and ethers are common enough that you don't feel the need to horde them.

I kinda wish FF had more elemental weaknesses. Off the top of my head, when I play a "classical" (aka mainline, pre-XIV) Final Fantasy, roughly... half the monsters are weak to an element. And when they are, playing on said element usually oneshots them, or allow the mage to deal as much damage as the physical classes.
I still have so fond memories of fucking with materias so that Cloud would deal Fire damage while attacking. He'd oneshot the local monsters, easy money.

BLMs have fast cast times now.

As far as capturing the bad ass mage fantasy, the first game that comes to mind is Dragon's Dogma. The mages in that game really feel like mages with giant fuckyou spells, but playing a mage yourself is kinda shit since the cast times are long and the enemy AI targets the player. It's best to leave mages to your pawns, or if you play a mage you basically only used the regular attack that works kinda like homing soul missile from Dark Souls. There's also 7th Saga, an Enix game, where Esuna is one of the best characters. She's a mage and you can kinda have infinite MP by using the MP drain spell. I feel like there's a game or two that I'm not thinking of right now that also lets you "feel" like a mage.

Final Fantasy generally doesn't capture the "mage" fantasy imo, because all you're doing most of the time is selecting a differently colored particle effect animation to appear on your screen.

Rebirth's OST is good, of course, one of the best... but it's riding on the laurels of a soundtrack that already existed. Stellar Blade and E33 both have ORIGINAL soundtracks that haven't been done already. There are a lot of new tracks in Rebirth as well, (Bow wowow bow wowow) but it sorta feels a bit unfair to the other games that it won imo.

I posted it here before (though I didn't save the link or a screenshot), but an interview Q&A type deal somewhat had Kitase say, about R=U, that he takes what he said previously back. When originally asked the question that people like to cite, he said "no" because that's not how he personally viewed it, but after some deliberation, he realized that it could in fact be true. Moreover, he did not write that part of the script; that part of the script had gone back and forth between everyone, writing, rewriting, editing, etc and it could have been the original intention of Nojima (the credited writer) for R=U, but that this wasn't communicated to the rest of the people handling the script, and so Kitase didn't "get the memo" so-to-speak and had previously discredited this theory.

The reality is that /vg/ should be "/live service general/", not "/video game general/". Small exceptions can be made, for example the "2d hentai general" is a collective of a bunch of games that are constantly releasing (similar to live service) but each game on its own is not really deserving of an individual thread. The Fighting Game General is another; it's a collection of games that are constantly being played (in many cases, but not all, they are live service) or being patched. Bottom line is that "/vg/" should be dedicated only to games or genres or subjects that are consistently releasing content or are constantly being patched or are otherwise some sort of live service. It's for "evergreen" video game related thread topics. That's why /ffg/ made sense and was somehow less schizo when it was a gacha general.

Ideally, and this will never happen, but ideally /v/ should be for more transient video game threads, like how it sometimes happens now, where there will be "general" type threads for a video game that just recently released, but it is something like a single player game and does not warrant and can probably not even sustain an "evergreen" type thread, so they exist on /v/ as flash-in-the-pan type threads on release, and then disappear except for occasionally when some new person plays the game and wants to create a thread about it. Unfortunately, /v/ is just /b/ but with video games, so this cannot actually happen due to moderator curated "thread culture". Current /v/ is like /pol/+/b/ with everyone dancing around the topic of video games.

I don't really think in this way. I like and appreciate each game for what it is. I like X-2 battle system, but I like the battle systems of the other games as well. You also can't just throw X-2's battle system into a game like that because the "outfits" are classes, and some games don't have classes while others still allow you to essentially create your own class with that game's gimmick system. I'm just going by what I read on places that aren't solely dedicated to shitposting about XIV and XVI. I don't have a Steam deck and I'm not stupid enough to own a Switch 2. The conversations I read also seem to be along the lines of my intuitive thought process that UE is probably much easier to port, work with, and optimize than a heavily modded in-house engine based on an already heavily modded in-house engine.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying that it would likely require a lot of work to get it to run on a Switch 2 at a steady 30fps.

There are several reasons why a game can have a bad rating. Sometimes the port is poor. Sometimes the developer does something controversial (in monetization, political, etc.) and the game gets review bombed as a result. Sometimes none of the above are true and the game is just bad. In the case of Rebirth, its the case that the port is bad.
Remake had the advantage of releasing on EGS before it released on Steam. That allowed SE to work out the kinks of their dogshit port before they got it out on Steam, which results in the Steam version being rated fairly highly on Steam.
Rebirth on the other hard? Bad port from day one, and the rating will always carry the scars of that.
If SE is serious about day one PC releases, they need to get their god damn shit together when it comes to their PC ports, because its never gonna succeed while they continue to halfass the version of their game with the most sales potential.

We once again care more about a game's sales than the game itself, even though I was told that this was never the case.
