There's a port of Mother 1&2 to the GBA, which has a fan translation patch for the Mother 1 half, that's the best way to play Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings. The official translation is lower quality. The GBA port has QOL improvements over the NES original.
For Earthbound/Mother 2, just play the official SNES version. Mother 3 is on the GBA and has a high quality fan translation.
I recommend using emulators for all three. You can easily find ROMs on the Internet Archive, last time I checked. I don't recommend skipping Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings, because it sets up story content in Earthbound, but if you find the retro aspects too frustrating after giving it a chance, just drop it and play Earthbound instead.

You know what's peculiar? You play the Zelda game, you end up in a city, with lights, skyscrapers, much like that in the background.

You end up KILLING Susie and Ralsei, to find a a manhole, which you jump into. Much like a hole in the mountain. It leads you to an underground area, with monsters. Monsters like, a yellow one throwing red spears in a room with flowers, pink cats that sing and are generally loud, orange one with spiky heads controlling a grey one from a distance, which then gives up after you destroy the grey one. Before you finish, you end up killing what are probably babies hiding in a room. All of it then leads you to Tenna, hinting that some way this is all real, and then immediately to the Shelter, as if you already passed Hometown.

Very, very interesting.
I think this IS all a game, the Shelter/Bunker IS a Shelter/Bunker, and this is ALL a metaphor for protecting monsters from humans.

at the end of chapter 2 toriel sees the tires and not only does she keep susie home and call the police, she doesn't tell them about it and instead turns it into an impromptu sleepover so they won't be worried about it and tells susie to call her parents so they won't be either, all of which is incredibly perceptive and thoughtful on her part
