Hiding in plain sight isn't really important for the short range engagements that dominate this game. The strategy with bushes usually is to increase your frontal silhouette, especially of the turret, to make it hard to estimate where the turret and/or relevant weakspots begin. The cope cage actually makes good bush placement easier.

Yes, just thought it's neat to have some numbers/graphs to actually back that up.Standoff distance alone won't do much against shaped charges unless the distance becomes ridiculous. Slat/cage armor can only work by either
- disabling the fuze
- deforming the shaped charge before detonation, leading to no/bad liner jet formation
- shifting it off axis before detonation, maybe leading to it hitting a more armored spot/missing
and in the age of RPG warheads strapped to shitty toy drones
- making it difficult to actually aim at something important because you have to guesstimate a line between the cage and the part of the tank you want to hit (and probably can't even see)

The real TRVKE is that markers allow you to strategize and play to your plane's strenghts, and to the enemy's weaknesses, better. If there were no markers, every engagement would be decided before it even begins, but neither side would know the result until they got close, recognized each other's planes and one though "I'm fucking dead to a handheld UFO" while the other though "nice, free kill", at which point there's nothing either of them can do to influence the outcome. It would shift the focus from the pilot to the plane - in other words, make the game less skill-dependent and more seemingly random.

okay, looking into this again now that my daily amphetamines kicked in. made a new controls profile with absolutely no bindings except Q/E yaw, W/S pitch, A/D roll, and shift/ctrl throttle.
planes:
- with no radar bindings, alt + WASD passes through to control surfaces
- with aircraft radar movement bound to alt + WASD, the radar controls catch it and it does not get passed through to control surfaces
- if I have HELICOPTER radar controls on alt + WASD (and completely unbound for planes), alt + WASD does not pass through and just does nothing in planes

helis:
- no radar bindings at all, alt + WASD passes through as expected
- aircraft radar bindings only on alt + WASD: inputs pass through to controls same as no binds at all
- heli radar binds only or heli + aircraft radar binds: inputs pass through to controls, but also move radar
- possibly jank workaround: binding alt+wasd to helicopter trim controls as well as heli radar results in the trim controls absorbing it (and doing nothing if unless you are in full real controls) rather than immediate control inputs. this is obviously suboptimal if you are playing helis with radars in sim for some reason, but as long as autotrim is enabled this seems like a workable temporary fix for the issue.
