Well shielding is tricky because you have to keep in mind that your supports can heal you faster than the shield recharges, so use it sparingly. You should animation cancel with it if there's no one in range too. Jumping forward and shielding lets you keep your momentum, which is good when you're pushing up. If there are hela daggers in your shield, do not put it down or else they will explode instantly. Things that destroy your shield instantly like 100 charge emma and witch-strange team up are your counters

I've stopped playing Mag and Strange completely after nonstop solo tank games in GM1. I'm only playing Thor if forced to solo tank and playing him like a dps. Actually walking this back a little, the flight time nerf is actually a buff in disguise. Assuming the cooldown isn't extended it means you get more uses out of it given the cooldown doesn't start until the speed ends. And you don't really use it for the extra speed unless you're pushing point to spawn, it's mainly for the quick dodges and bonus health.
