Yes, friendship resets at the start of a run. When picking what to train that day, friendships are on the right. Get them to 4 of 5 bars filled, and they will "rainbow circle" train for you, if they are training their preferred style.

For type of racing, above an umas stats you will see a preferred growth rate. Pacers are speed and stamina. Long racers are speed , stamina and power. So make the call yourself.

If they are B in something, screw it unless you can inherit their skill up to A. Not worth the debuff.

You can't do runs to target a specific red gene or green gene, that's decided by which horse you raise. You can do runs to target a specific white gene, but even if you get it if the other sparks are 1 star it's useless.
Blue genes are the only ones during a run that a player can actually focus on to get at the start as it requires 600/1100 in the stat and hoping to RNG.

White genes are only the focus now because of the Tachyon events that can "fix" white gene heavy parents that have good inherits but low blue/red/green stars.

To get long to appear you need to do optional races.
Gold ship mandatory races are 5 medium 4 long, so two long side races gets her to long finals.
Special week is 3-3, rudolf and super creek are 4-4, so an optional long will get you it.
Rice shower has 3 medium and 4 long mandatory races, but you almost always end up doing a medium to get fans early on, you can throw her at mile OP/G3 instead to get the fan count up to avoid hopeful stakes or other optional medium distances.
Or do hopefulstakes and a long side race later on.
Mayano topgun does long by default as long as you get the initial 10k fans doing only one optional mid race, meaning doing no more than 3 mile ones if hopeful stakes isn't enough keeps her on track.
