Depends on the game, there's not many space CRPGs in the first place. I like claws and bites and fangs and tails so fantasy appeals to me more, usually. But a cool sci-fi setting can be pure kino as well.

Man, any pretence of balance just up and vanishes the further into the game you go. Having only played through the game once at release and replaying it now, I had forgotten just much utter bullshit you can get up to by late game. Especially if you got level 4 of Icon. And double especially with all the Executioner nonsense.

Are you playing on Unfair or just bad?

I'm on my first playthrough of Rogue Trader and was having a great, relatively smooth time until Chapter 4. My team is at Level 36, and I've just filled out the Exemplar talents, and I went to the Winterscale planet to begin the forest mission, only to get immediately destroyed by the Aeldari encounter.

The encounter on Footfall didn't go much better either, I was carried mostly by having every possible ally in the bar and Abelard being particularly resilient. Am I underlevelled somehow or is this just a bizarre difficulty spike? Yesmerrys gave me just as much of a headache.

Space is always preferable to me over fantasy, but there are few space rpgs

I'm running Officer Player character, Cassia, Abelard, Pasqal, Argenta and Idira. I focus on Fellowship and BS for myself, Fellowship and Perception for Cassia, Toughness and Strength for Abelard, Intelligence and alternating Weapon/Ballistic skill for Pasqal, and Willpower/Perception for Idira. When I can't do that, I just touch up other skills like Medicae or Awareness on whoever has the highest.

As far as skill picking goes, does it really affect the difficulty that much? I build Abelard like a tank, Argenta to improve her shooting, my character/Cassia to give more benefits with their Voice of Command, etc. I'm building them towards their Archetypes' strength.

This game is all about the skills. The key is to look carefully at what they do, and respec as necessary by talking to Janris Danrok on the bridge
For example, Abelard should be able to parry almost everything by that level

Bollocks, I must've built my skills suboptimally then. My main issue with the Aeldari encounter was the Rangers overpenetrating sniper shots two-tapping my team, and with the Footfall fight both my PC and Pasqal got minced by the Plasma Overcharge shots from the boss.

Executioner gives you bleed on all your attacks. As for you psyker abilities you should've picked up Biomancy somewhere along the way to get that ability that poisons enemies on hit. Add that with fire and you will literally melt enemies.

Shield builds kinda suck ass compared to running around with a greatsword cleaving chaff and other than the feudal world strumpette getting dragged to my ship to serve me coffee there isn't all the much interesting about the DLC. Hopefully we get a good plotline for the Trazyn DLC so I can try a good Servo Skull build or do a Willpower stacking Priest Bladedancer into Psychic Awakening.

Do psychic awakenings happen out of the blue to grown ass men? Is there a way to RP my character suddendly having an awakening?

It's not. You waste an attack for no reason, as a dodge build (assuming you are one) you're doing a shitton of damage to yourself and you could get bad trauma, you're wasting AP for some extra on-hit damage when psyker already has multiple items that do that, your fire damage on hit doesn't interact with executioner at all.
It's just wasteful.
Blade dancer assassin can already stack damage via lethality stacking and direct damage, arch-militant via extermination, executioner via DoTs. Orchestrate flames is a meme youtubers sucked off on release and thus the 'community' parroted.
Setting a warrior on fire who's wielding a chainsaw is very worth it, because then they get to benefit from the extra damage for their whole turn (and chainsaws burst-fire adding up to a ton of damage), your own bladedancer guy setting himself on fire not so much.
But the game is easy so do hat you want to do.

I was dual wielding and did decent damage, problem is that I was doing a Vanguard run and reactive shield bash isn't an attack of opportunity and counterattack stance doesn't trigger whenever you block. I know all the ways I could break shields they are just boring and don't synergize with the defensive builds like they should.

The bigger issue I had was that I was Exemplar 3 after the Commissar/Malice encounter and fights were stupid easy. I'm hoping they do an exp overhaul in the next 6 months so the Trazyn DLC doesn't break the game even more.

They're just psykers who are unlikely to have a meltdown or explode when using their powers, being reliable and able. The black ships are horrible and the sanctioning process is horrible, but afterwards they're at least proven to be very unlikely to just spontaneously die (with the help of psyker implants and shit also). It's like boot camp.
Astropaths I don't recall exactly what the requirements are, I think they have enough power but not enough control? So they go through the soulbinding process that malcador made to make their power use more secure, then they go do the whole astropath business

It actually makes Vanguard worse at everything except raw defense, Blocking happens before Parry and doesn't count as one so every ability that triggers off Parrying like counter attacking enemies just doesn't trigger and mathwise shield bashing after a block doesn't properly count as an attack of opportunity so I'm doing like 30 damage with a bash while the occasional Parry does 90+ on the counterswing. My character was standing in front of everyone being an invincible ahole while Kibbelah, Idira or ranged Pasqal one shot everything thanks to being so overleveled and it was just pretty boring.

Bizarre but not that improbable, shit can behave weird on different hardware. I timed it, when starting the game up it takes over 2 minuets for it to load the main menu. Loading saves is much faster after that, but there are still some that take unreasonably long and it sometimes just freezes and shits itself for like 30 seconds when it gets discombobulated by random shit, usually to do with the UI.
Crashes are luckily not super frequent, like one every 10 hours on average, and they happen during zone transitions after the autosave, so I don't lose progress, but I still have to go through that 2 minute startup every time.

How do I build Jimmy when I first get him? I'm very fucking stupid and I always feel like I end up making some shit build.

For once I actually agree with her. Starting a retributive war with the monkeys would be really stupid considering you are destined to lose and low numbers of survivors is already a problem for your species. Killing yourselves upon the limitless waves of monkeys for no reason while you are simultaneously complaining about how you're dying out is really funny, and really sends home the point that these people are just plain stupid despite being advanced in many ways.

I have always been of the opinion that humans and eldar should work together, since both of us share the larger enemy of chaos, but they're so dumb while calling us dumb which makes them so hard to interact with.

If you want to build him as a damage dealer:
Warrior into Executioner. Don't take any warrior skills, only new psyker spells. Prioritize psyker talents, you can take warrior talents when you hit exemplar.
Why not Assassin? Because Assassin is much more dependant on assassin talents unlike executioner that works perfectly well without executioner talents, you just need to shit out some dots which he can already do due to being a biomancer.
Psyker talents that you should take asap: Strange Vitality and Biophysical Distortion. You can also give him pyromancy discipline, but I feel it's unnecessary since he's already gonna be shitting out damage.
Psyker Spells you should take: Get Warp Speed asap. After that take whatever you like or think you need - there are no bad spells in Sanctic and Biomancy disciplines. This build will synergize well with your designated flamethrower user if you have one

Ok here is a really funny bug report. It took me a while, but I found the item interaction that is causing it.

I have Solomorne who is wearing the High Spinner chest armor. This chest armor causes adjacent enemies to make a Willpower test when they enter his proximity.
He also has the "Public Sentencing" arbitrator origin talent, which causes him to make an attack of opportunity whenever an adjacent enemy fails a Willpower test.
These two items have an obvious synergy and I paired them on purpose, but the bug that results from them together is hilarious.
The third piece of the puzzle is the "Prepared Prosecution" arbitrator origin talent, which allows you place Solomorne next to an enemy during the tactical phase, the pre-fight placement phase.
During the pre-combat round where you place your units on the grid to determine where they start the combat, you can actually move Solomorne next to an enemy during this placement round, which causes enemies to make the Willpower test from the Spinner chest armor, and he will actually shoot them during this placement round if they fail it. The funny part is that you can keep doing it endlessly, since you can move your guys around however often as you want during this round. Which means Solormorne can actually shoot every single enemy with his shotgun for free endlessly before the fight even starts. Here is a screenshot of every single enemy in this encounter already half health and on fire during the placement pre-fight round because he shot every single one of them. This is one of the funniest bugs I've encountered.

That's a really bizarre comparison when both Owlcat and Larian do the same thing, they make the PCs ridiculously powerful and important. The only difference is Larian does it multiple times with their Origin characters, though Owlcat is really not that far off in RT, considering the general power level and importance of your companions.

So Imperial Knight, other Schola Progenium origins like some higher standing Crusader, Bolter Bitch, Tempestus Scions. Higher standing Administratum guy would fit too, memes aside.

All existing origins should get suborigins at least imo.

I recently was replaying BG1 and 2 and ended up quitting in the Underdark due to burnout and boredom with the point and click combat.

Biggest takeaway is that honestly, the pathfinding is so fucking awful that is makes the entire game a slog to play through. It legitimately fights you at every step of the way, from minute one to the end. Not a single exit area where companions wouldn't get stuck, not a path where one wouldn't go off in the opposite direction. At least once every 15 minutes several of your companions will get stuck inside each other too.

Also BG1 looks incredibly ugly, it really suffers from being the first game in the engine. Wilderness areas can be okay, but as soon as there is a building everything goes out the window.

Aside from Owlcat 40k slop are there any proper CRPGs coming out this year?

I miss when Owlcat at least tried to make good games with stuff like Pathfinder as opposed to catering to the lowest common denominator.

They should bring the character approval system back. It's something that was severely lacking in Rogue Trader

You know one of the biggest tragedies of CRPGs is that the DA2 system was never adopted in future CRPGs or even better, expanded on. Finally a system where you can actually oppose and disagree with your companions, and you can actually build a relationship of mutual respect while still disagreeing instead of forcing the companions to alter everything about themselves to align with the PC.
