I played it for a very short period of time at its launch years ago, but didn't really stick with it.

in games where your movement is less relevant, like wow and MOBAs, I prefer ranged characters, and in games where your movement is more relevant I prefer melee. in Lost Ark I mained Gunslinger but my second favorite was Deathblade.

Overall yes, movement is the main thing. Being in a right place, stacking on top of each other with other players, keeping buffs up, blocking/dodging are expected. Especially in later expansions and group content. You can build some classes to facetank, press one button and be effective, like already mentioned necromance reaper or engi mechanist. And couple of others that you need to piano on top of doing mechanic, like thief and especially ele.
The more people you have in one place, keeping up all the buffs, the easier it is to disregard mechanic and mash rotation, only moving together when necessary. In solo or random coop you will be moving around a lot. Some zones and their events require frequent navigating around the map with mounts too.
I see warriors the least these days. Engi is everywhere thanks to mechanist and their green robot. Other subclasses appear from time to time, because they are fun to play and good.

Warriors are strong badass face melters. They're one of the most survivable classes in the game while still dealing consistently high DPS and a straightforward "I see face, I bash it" playstyle. It just works. The transgender/LBGTQ contingent of this game seems to hate warriors more than any other class.

Thieves vary from AFK DPSers (dual pistols unload build) to high investment low return grognard dagger or rifle guilds. They've fallen from grace since the old days due to a decade of whining. They have a support build that has recently been pretty good but I wouldn't bother unless you're into really weird niche stuff.

Elementalists are Wizards, But Not Really. They're plagued with a more or less persistent need to constantly change elements (which increases the number of keys to hit and abilities to remember) and only a few precise builds are any good, and not really worth the finger investment given their overall squishiness and DPS output that doesn't quite seem to match the visual effects. However hey can still be fun sometimes.

"Roles" are an afterthought; being self sufficient and blobbing with fellow retards spamming all buffs is the overall structure. If your IQ is anywhere above a starving bloated ganges river corpse, you'll be able to figure out which traits are "good" for your chosen class and won't need to beg for a URL to meta builds in map chat. Protip trait text tends to be written like this: "Option A: Do 20% more damage to everything all the time. Option B: Once per hour make an enemy miss one attack sometimes if the moon is full and it hasn't eaten breakfast that morning."

Most ground target skills are good and there are multiple control options to tailor it to how you want it to work (e.g. auto fire where mouse cursor or toggleable action cam is pointing, or lock to current target, etc).

Engineer grenade spam is annoying and kitshit is outdated but people still use it because theoretically their spreadsheet says it does 0.01% more dps in a perfect rotation against a training golem. Engineer's non-core builds are great, but you won't have those if you're avoiding expansions for now. Mechanist is infamously braindead because your robot pet does almost all of the work, the downside is it looks pretty gauche having a big green gaybot stomping all over the place right next to you all the time. Huge miss not allowing customization for that thing, instead they wasted asset investment on.. skiff skins. Lame.

Given that you don't understand anything about the game yet, you're getting ahead of yourself trying to second guess yourself on what will be fun. This game heavily encourages and rewards creating multiple characters and there is no cost to switch between them at ease. In the time you've been worrying about this, you could have completed the tutorial on 3+ characters.

I will never understand this "afraid to play the game" zoomer mentality. I don't know why they need to watch youtuber ecelebs explain things while they shiver in terror at the thought of "having a bad time" and not getting everything right in the first 30 seconds.

Most people who play this game have at least one of every class, many have 20+ character slots. If you're not having any fun just try something else.

In that case you want PoF and mounts because that's going to matter 99x more to world completion than the class you pick. You're going to be playing like it's 13 years ago and everyone else zooming past you on mounts is a higher life form intersecting your plane of existence. That's the other thing, this game strongly encourages you to keep replaying core tyria, even at level 80, because you just auto scale down anyway. Assuming you want any legendary/skin/cheevoslop at all. If you want to do it the slow way the first time around that's fine, but again, the class you pick doesn't matter because you're going to suck until you're 80 and know what you're doing anyway.

It's a shame there was just the summer sale, maybe another around Halloween? The normally-$100 Dragon Saga complete pack is insane value at $50 on sale. Gives you the first 3 expansions and all the "living world" psuedo-expansion stuff between them. Secrets of the Obscure, Janthir Wilds, and Visions of Eternity aren't part of that pack, I'd probably consider grabbing (one of) them if you're looking to keep playing before the next sale. That dragon saga pack sale price is just that good in my opinion, worth holding off on it and its contents until you get it on sale.
Also the deluxe edition of the expansions come with an identity repair kit which lets you change your name, might be worth checking out the other deluxe bonuses to see if it's worth it to you.

It kinda depends on what you do in the game. Like with world vs world you'll be swimming in them, if you mainly stick to open world stuff you won't get a ton. You can get a good amount from the Wizard's Vault which is just the system for the main log-in and daily/weekly tasks, gives you goodboy points to buy a lot of cool stuff like skins or raw gold.
As far as putting some perspective on gold value, once you've got some basic masteries and mounts in endgame you probably make like roughly 10-15 gold per hour just playing the game, doing dailies, meta-events etc. Good farms get like 20 to like 30 or so gold per hour. Instanced stuff can make you more from once a day/week rewards and stuff, especially fractal dungeons. You can get 90 gold for relatively very little wizardbucks every 3-ish months, basically a quarterly stimmy check for practically just logging in.

Some builds also scale from number of conditions on the enemy. The standard is to put 10 conditions on the golem.
You didn't list food and utilities but I assume you have that covered. Aside from that, leaking auto attacks due to ping or slow button presses can dramatically lower your dps. But make sure you're not cancelling skills. Ping will also mess with your character's model (stops attacking completely) when they land from a leap so make sure you mash your next button asap to keep things moving. Beyond that the last 10% is entirely rng.
Have you ever looked at a weapon and wondered what "Weapon Strength: 950-1050" meant? It's built-in rng so you don't see the exact same numbers whenever you use the same attacks. These speedrun trannies will sit in the golem room for hours doing the same thing over and over until they get good rolls and then post that as the benchmark. Doubly so for condi builds with traits that have a chance to inflict conditions on crit.
Aim for 85-90% of benchmarks depending on the build. If you can get that then you're doing everything right.

The main bottlenecks are Ecto (1200 up front for two prerequisite armor sets, then 600 per piece of Legendary) and the daily material rewards from all three of the SotO metas (5 of each per piece, so 30 days of doing all three metas).
Rift Essences can be a timegate if you mainly get them from doing 3x each type of Convergence weekly (enough for one piece every two weeks), but you can also farm them if you want to go faster than that.

There's a bit of conflicting information in the material they've put out so far, where one source says that the Convergence will be in the first two patches and another says that it's only coming in the last patch with the Fractal. I'm inclined to believe that it's going to work the same way it did in JW where the Convergence gets added in the first patch, the second patch adds another boss to it, and the final patch adds CM Convergences, but that's making the dangerous assumption that they're doing anything that makes sense.

The other thing that's probably true is that they're renaming Strikes to "Raid Encounters", so when they say that there's a Raid Encounter in each of the first two updates, they just mean that they're reverting to SotO where there were two Strikes rather than a single Raid Wing with three bosses like in JW.

The best way to make inferences is to look at it from their perspective rather than whatever they're promising in public.
The SotO convergence came in the same patch with the first part of nayos and happens to consist of nayos scenery. So they weren't content with releasing the convergence until they had finished one part of nayos.
The convergence in Janthir came with the first patch, which also featured the raid. The convergence uses the same scenery as the raid and the same bosses too.

So when VoE releases, I'd look out for big, significant story bossfights. If one of those is going to be the convergence, then they might release the convergence on the first patch. If not, then it'll be later.

This is pretty much what I was thinking, yeah. I think that one of the big pain points for JW's story was that it felt like it had very few boss fights because you didn't get to kill the titans in the actual expansion and when you DID kill them, you ran through all three in the same instance. I think they're probably going to be somewhat conscious of spreading those fights out across the patches.

So my guess about the structure of VoE is this:
- The initial campaign will have an actual end boss that you kill in a story instance
- The first patch will not have story, but will have a Strike(/"Raid Encounter") version of that boss along with a Convergence that uses a more pub-friendly version of the same boss.
- The second patch will have a story about half as long as the base expansion, and will also have a major story boss to help it feel more substantial than the SotO/JW patch stories. That same patch will add the Strike/Raid Encounter version of that boss, and also add it as an alternative endboss to the Convergence.
- The last patch has the CM Convergence and the Fractal, with a story as long as the one in the second patch. They might try to do something like the last patch of SotO (or Istan/Twilight Oasis) where they're able to double up and share some assets and mechanics between the Fractal boss, story boss, and open-world boss.

That's a little less development work (two Strikes versus a three-boss Raid) and spread out more evenly between the patches. It might be alright as long as they don't phone in the open-world stuff as hard as they did in JW.
