I think when people say "Sunbreak fixed everything", I think it's usually because their idea of Sunbreak includes the finished base Rise with all the TUs.

Base Rise was a piss easy, anemic game. Not quite as easy as Wilds, since monsters did more damage in comparison, but the monsters really were no match for how mobile players were and how many counters they had. People meme on Wilds for no Elder Dragons or endgame, but Rise only had two EDs on release and one was stuck in the tower defense mode. The endgame for Rise, on release, was grinding Narwa, a fight a lot of people don't like because it's boring, or doing the tower defense game where you watch visual vomit for 5 minutes before the Apex monster blows up all your defenses instantly and then you smack it for a bit with super inflated numbers with minor changes.

Sunbreak introduced a lot of monsters, adjusted them to have ways to keep up with player mobility and counters, and put in a real meaty endgame where difficulty keeps increasing for a long time.

Base game was fun, but no one I knew stuck with it through the TUs and just got back into it with Sunbreak.

No, not really. I was just commenting on why a lot of people say "Sunbreak fixed everything". I think new players that come in to Wilds at the start of the expansion will think it's better, but I don't think it'll win over series veterans that bounced off it like /mhg/.

I personally like Wilds and play it a lot, but it's a bit too compromised in its design. I would have actually preferred it if they swung for the fences for the "open world emergent hunting experience" game that they alluded to in all the pre-release stuff. Instead, they have this wishy washy middle ground where they were too afraid casual would bounce off the more old-school gathering and crafting systems, so everything is marked and you can spider-man pull it up from a mile away and your bird takes you exactly where you need to go without any input, but they also leaned away from arcade-y classic monhun with "realistic" big open environments, muddy visuals, and reeled in monsters and fights.

It's not like they're going to have a TU where they suddenly fix the 2 good maps looking like shit 2/3 of the time and the other 3 maps looking like shit, and playing like shit, all the time. It's not like they can retroactively unfuck the awful on-rails story experience people had to sit through. Also, Focus mode is too big of a divide for people, I think. I don't mind it that much, but I openly admit that it does take away a lot of the old monhun feel when you're just spinning the camera and character around midswing. It's just the fully evolved version of some of the shit Rise did, but I think it's so baked into the gameplay that they can't untangle it and it will always be there and alienate the people that don't like it.

It’s likely the former. In HR, we have to hunt an Arkveld since the frenzy virus infected it severely due to biomagnification, so it stands to reason to assume that the Arkveld species pre-extinction fell to the same fate.

Jin is the only one I don't think Arkveld could handle, mostly due to the fact that Jin is absurdly large and covered with incredibly strong armor. I don't think anything we've seen in Wilds could remotely handle Jin. The other three though? Arkveld clears. As you mention though they seem to be particularly susceptible to Frenzy so while it could maybe kill a Gore it likely is going to get Frenzied in the process and be fucked after the fact.

I want a cool up Gore Magala subspecies (not variant like Chaotic) that turns into something completely different than Shagaru. Maybe have it tie into guardians somehow, like in trying to make a Guardian Shagaru Magala they fucked it up and made a brand new evolution it can go through. Maybe they tried to mix it with some of the other Elder Dragons to fill in the gaps like Velkhana, Valstrax or even Rukodiora, the guardian concept has so much potential for cool shit that has been pretty much wasted so far.

I always assumed that was due to the whole Guardian thing, at least how it managed to lay eggs without reproduction. Those eggs then maturing quickly I think is just hand-waved by the game as an excuse to have a reason to hunt them. Also I'm thinking about it now and they could have easily fixed both Arkveld and stupid brown boy's story by doing the following:

That maxes out WEX, Agi, MM, 1 Burst and gives me a few 1 slots for utility to max out Divine Blessing or Bleed Resistance. Also not seen is Shockproof

Removal of the stake mechanics from gunlance. I have no idea why the fuck they thought it was a good idea to have one of the least mobile, most unsafe weapons have a giant chunk of its DPS be tied to one of the most awkward mechanics in the game.

I'm honestly surprised they haven't experimented with it more since it's such an old idea. I guess the earliest example would be switchaxe with locking your big boom behind your grave but most people probably think of IG first since your moveset changes so drastically. Imagine a HH that totally changes moveset when all your songs are up. It would be strange.

My issue is mostly with normal gunlances. In iceborne, normal gunlance was incredibly unsafe to play. In order to do damage with it, you had to get out full bursts. The issue is that the combo to do full bursts was very slow and the monsters in iceborne are fucking spastic. They added the new wyvernstake mechanic where you could load it using slinger ammo, stick it into a monster, and hit it with shelling in order to do an extra burst of damage with each shell. In theory this makes normal gunlance the strongest of the three types because you do big blasts of damage with each full burst, but the stake was extremely cumbersome to apply.

The animation to stick it takes forever to finish and the hitbox on it is a little small so if they wiggle over a few inches it'll miss, drop your slinger ammo, and then you have to grab it again, reload the stake, and re-attempt to stick it in before you can do damage. The monster can also still move around and cause you to miss the stake with your shells even if you're still hitting it. You could go wide gunlance instead as the poke-shell-repeat-reload combo was a lot safer than fullbursts, but you still have to deal with the shitty stake. And even then the damage just isn't great for the amount of effort you have to put in even compared to other lower DPS weapons like lance and HH. You have to really know monsters intimately compared to other weapons to properly utilize GL in iceborne. I still have issues with Wilds GL as it basically only has one combo you want to spam forever, but I prefer it to Iceborne still.

The drill is the focus strike move to break wounds. It has issues too. If you miss you have to wait a moment to put it away and you basically have to be up a monster's ass to hit with it. Arguably the worst focus strike in the game, although the damage is okay if you hit with it and you aren't stealing a wound from another weapon type that might need it.

I'd recommend giving it a shot. It does feel good to play and you can still do the old full burst combo loop if you don't like the new double stake combo. Full bursts are much easier to get out as well as they aren't as slow and you can combo into them from perfect guards too.
