None of the places introduced were interesting or stand out aside from Nord, we didn't really need to know about their political stance because the noble vs commoner conflict was more present via Jusis and Machias than it ever was among the general populace, and the "Civil War" is honestly the most disappointing teased plot point in the series bar none. I liked CS3. The gameplay changes were fun and welcome, it handled a big cast well unlike CS4 and Reverie, and it arguably has the most impactful reveals of the entire arc. It sucks that these reveals happen until the last act of the game sure, and the very formulaic approach makes it easy to mock, but I liked the formula and appreciated when they broke it after the Juno Naval Base section.
I do think that it wanted to have its cake and eat it too with the old returning characters, going to Crossbell and in general the change in direction that hinted at more and more legacy characters coming.

Another thing I dislike is like in Reverie or Kai, these legacy characters return but they barely interact with the new party. Zero arguably did it best with Estelle and Joshua even if they don't join the party until very late in the game. At least we see them often and talk to them a good amount. But in newer entries they just are in Erebonia or Calvard doing their own thing. It sucks.

I don't think CS1 did an equally good job getting me invested in every single Class VII member. For example, nothing ever made me care much about Laura, Gaius, Elliot or even Machias despite his sad backstory. Jusis was interesting but relegated to Millium's bf and his brother steals his spotlight. Emma got some really good development, but I'd argue it is spread out throughout CS3-5, at least the best parts of it.
Ditto with Alisa. Sara's somber nature in 3 was just kinda out of nowhere. It makes sense given you're were her father fell in battle, but it wasn't gradual or anything, she just felt like she did a 180 off the bat, but 4 and Reverie balance out her quiet melancholy with the beer-drinking slacker from CS1 and 2 quite nicely.

Rean's main struggle throughout every single CS game is being a martyr, being afraid his power will hurt people he cares about, and accepting people love him. Sure the situations in which these issues are tested can change slightly, but these things are what the writers wanted to explore and it took them 5 fucking games to come to a conclusion to these things.
And to add insult to injury, Rean always, without fail in every game, has a woman basically crying in his arms telling him "I love you. We love you. Please do not put yourselves in harm's way." And he goes "Haha..." and doesn't get it and so we recycle this fucking tired plot point for the 5th fucking time.
Pic rel is a character from a fucking LN, the very thing that heavily inspired CS, and this is one aspect of his character arc that gets addressed early on and resolved, and it is done like 10x better than how CS did it Rean.

To recapitulate, the problem is how repetitive this is. Yeah they could have made this Rean's one thing and built around it. But they beat him over the head with the answer over and over and in perfectly reasonable moments to have this resolved it just doesn't get resolved. Nothing in CS necessitates it being 5 games long.

I feel like a mix of the available data is best. In my opinion,. the reason Cold Steel discussion turned out like it did in the west is because we skipped Crossbell. Not even just Crossbell but Third as well. By the point of Cold Steel, Crossbell had already prepped the Japanese audience whereas if you were following the western releases at the time you went from a shoujoesque story in a steampunk setting to battle harem in a setting that while it isn't a Crossbell was pretty advanced compared to Liberl. I don't think I have heard all the music in Reverie as I have barely entered the 5th Stratum, but honestly I think Reverie has the weakest soundtrack of this arc. The Golden Hills music is probably my favorite. CS1 and 2 had consistently better music, but I think 4 has had my favorite tracks.
