Old BFs (pre-BC2) had godawful gunplay where actual recoil was entirely replaced by fucking random spread that was so bad you had to single fire or go prone to hit anything beyond melee range. Besides that and the terrible fog that made planes unnplayable they were great, but fucking up gunplay in an FPS is kind of a big fuckup that should NOT be brought back. Got the FW 189 in the watermelon crate today, and it has to be my favorite lowtier plane now. Truly a German zero. I feel like my aim is "fine", as for basic bitch mechanics I've got a lot of them down. Ranges and angles are not really an issue for me, I know how to kill 95% of the things I face at 6.7++ and I know the weaknesses of my tanks (jagdpanther just gets lolpenned by almost everything nowadays and with the horrid reverse speed you really can't get away with shooting and scooting).
I think my biggest issue is always positioning, I can never get into a comfortable position without getting flanked or bombed into an early disability check. It's always 1-2 kills followed up by getting one shotted.

Dogfighting performance unironically. TVC adds a whole new dimension to it - while planes without it are hard limited by their airframe and its capabilities, TVC allows you to just keep your nose pointed at the enemy regardless of how good or bad you rate or whatever and keep slinging missiles at them till they die. It's really powerful in small-scale engagements and 1v1s if you just get a bit of altitude, it's just that ARB rarely gets to that point so more generally useful stuff like energy retention and kinematic performance matter more there.

However the actual gameplay is very codlike but with a bf skin and absolute dogshit ttk because of bullet damage dropoff. Imagine a smg only hitting for 17 dmg because the enemy was 50 meters away instead of point blank so he has time to react to me only hitting him 5 times in the torso. Also the gepard is an abomination in that game, a2a missles wont lock beyond 1 km. The radar doesnt track enemies and the gun only shoots in bursts of 6 before "reloading" and it takes 3-4 rounds direct hit to kill infantry.

choice is mostly down to what caliber we're talking, but HE ought to do the trick most the time
lots of HE works well enough against most destroyers as they have paper thin hulls and no armor (except mutts, they get anti frag)
if you're firing something really small (4" or under)SAP might be more reliable but theres a lot of fuckery so 3" HE in high enough quantities also does the trick
