Yes, we just got a burst of powercreep (VSK9 and Yummy) that invalidated the previous burst of powercreep (Ryzeal and Maliss) which in turn invalidated the previous burst of powercreep (Snake-Eyes and Tenpai).
In more recent times, you are more likely to have your deck just become worse than the competition than actually get hit. (Ryzeal and Maliss got pissy little hits like getting semi-d before being powercrept basically entirely out of the metagame).
The problem is that most decks just simply cannot handle Turn 0 gameplay being done to them. Yummy beats this by having some of the most retardedly safe play patterns mixed with outrageous damage.

I tend to pick up decks and really like them, take my time to learn them, enjoy the game... then they get support.
The support usually makes them an order of magnitude more complex and usually a lot more viable, but for some reason I really struggle learning decks like that in this game and then building upon the knowledge, expanding my horizons etc.

This has happened to me so far with sky striker, branded despia, labrynth, centurion, white forest, vanquish soul, mementotlan just to name a few off the top of my head.
How do I un-brainlet myself and just keep learning and expanding?
Maybe it's because honestly, ever since I returned to the game I just learned from other people and netdecked.
Sky striker new quickplay? I can't even grasp what it does even after playing it and seeing it resolve.
Branded despia was simple on master duel first wave. Just summon tax dragons and juggle stuff with the red and white jesters.
Labrynth without Lady and the second trap.
Centurion before the 8 synchro.
White forest runick, without the azamina stuff.
Vanquish soul before Hollie and now K9 idk.
Memento before the sheep and the king.

The last deck I truly built myself was in teledad era and then later some evil hero brew I used and blackwings/batterymen that come to mind...
Back in those days building decent~ish decks was a lot easier, decks were really really easy to learn as well. I could just use 20 monsters archetype relevant, 10 spells 10 traps on average, mostly staples filled the slots.
Maybe I just need to accept I'm either a brainlet or just not as invested into this game as I thought I was.

Idk where I'm going with this, thanks for reading my blogpost if you did. Thought I'd share and see if people have similar experiences since the thread is slow.

A couple of issues. Everyone has a different pace of learning new decks and by what you're saying, it takes you longer to really get a feel for the deck. But you jump from deck to deck too much. A lot of the players who you think play the deck really well either are smart enough to quickly pick up decks or put in a bunch of hours behind the scenes into a deck, to the point of mastering it, to get good at it BEFORE jumping to a new deck.

It didn't even get THAT much more complex.
The 8's entire function is to make Atrii work. Any time you would normally make a 12 (i.e. Trudea+Primera or Primera+Gargoyle), you instead make the 8 a 4 to do 4+4= Primera Primus. Primus searches Oath and Oath places Atrii which draws you a card and makes the 12 anyway.
If you use Oath to start or hard drew Atrii, then you just make the 12 as-is.
The REAL complication is Wake-Up lines, but even then its a single core line to learn

>Wake-Up makes a Level 4 Token
>Wake-Up banishes to mill Phalanx
>4+4=Primera Primus, search Oath, place Atrii, make Auxila
>Auxila search Stand-Up

>Go to End Phase (If Nibiru-ed here, just use Phalanx to revive Auxila to make your Blazar plays)

I do go to locals every weekend.

Then they release new stuff for the deck and I would have to go back to it...

Somehow I really can't muster the energy and brain power to go back to decks that I already played a lot and then expand, change everything I learned.

Again if labrynth for example came out day 1 with all cards I would be okay with it. Same for WF/Azamina and the rest.
Maybe I'd rather learn a new deck at that point, but I also hate that I can't play my old ones anymore.

I'm also not invested enough in modern anymore despite following meta for the past 2 years.

Do you just casually show up with the same few decks with some upgrades every day, maybe play MD casually on the side?
How often and what level of decks do you buy and on what criteria? How do you engage with product if at all?
(I got fucked by like 80-90€ boxes due to taxes only pulling 10€ worth of junk many times. Had a single secret in a box multiple times too.)

I'm starting to think just showing up every week or every other week that I get to go is the majority of my enjoyment.
I also seriously question if I need meta decks for a 8-10-12 man local where most people are playing rogue with turbosweats showing up once a bloodmoon.

Would love to hear a mature take on this.

NTA but I'm 39 soon to be 40 and I play and keep up with this game just fine. The important factor is to keep up with this game with no pressure. Just do it for the love of the game. For 12 man locals a rogue deck would do you fine. But I'd highly recommend mastering a meta deck per year to really do well consistently.
The important thing is playing as much as you can to learn the matchups and see what HTs stop what decks at which chokepoints. That's really it.

I didn't struggle much in school, I usually passively absorbed enough during the day to get the American equivalent of a B+ I think.
I do not consider myself retarded in a genuine way, but I struggle just sitting down and reading/learning in a focused way.

Depends on what you consider good and it really depends on how much raw sitting down and memorizing it takes.
Simple decks like dinomorphia? Reading the cards and playing out the interactions once or twice.
Something like branded? A fuckton of time because there is way too much to memorize and keep track of and juggle.
Vanquish Soul was mostly intuitive to me, did take a couple reads and I managed to top multiple locals (pre-support) against stuff like fire kings, tenpai etc.

I tend to struggle picking up decks with long linear combos and decks that have a lot to keep track of like branded/labrynth.
I prefer to have a rough overview of a toolset I'm working with and just learning as I go.
If it takes a lot of sitting and learning before I can even start I tend to give up.

VS for me was simple because every card did a set of simple things. I need a target pop? Caesar. I need a bounce? madlove, etc.
Other decks often require a 5 step combo to get a pop for example even after the full setup.
Lots of juggling and busy work for simple effects. If you add that level of complexity to your deck, then how do you do when there is an opponent doing their own song and dance?

My biggest problem is that they clearly had this shit planned out but it was so delayed and scattered that the deck just sort of floundered until the new cards came. Cards were just doing shit for seemingly no reason until THE REASON came later.

I tried by building old shit decks and their retrains, but after a while I realized that to me at least it is a stupid money sink.
So now I spend that money into actual old cards I never had.
Slowly building a "nostalgia collection", just to look at, not to play. Not like there is a chance to play those types anywhere anymore either way.

There is actually, with GOAT and Edison formats that are becoming more popular lately. They're small communities of yugioh players who prefer older formats and of course the use of old cards.

I do collect old cards just for the sake of collecting. So if I see someone with an old card for trade I'll just straight up ask for a trade, but I'm not actively seeking these old cards.
Look into GOAT and Edison though, you may prefer playing the game that way.

First of all, I'm a SEAnigger, so I play OCG, and it's way, way cheaper than TCG, which is why it's way easier to keep up with the game.
