On my way down the mountain I noticed a gate off to the side of the road. Curiosity took hold and it puppeteered my body into combat with centaurs and ghouls, even as my pip boy's geiger counter began crackling. And my reward? A field of bunkers-- No, not bunkers. Tombs. A graveyard. Broken vents in the ground were hotspots of radiation and glowing ones crouched around them like survivors warming up at a campfire. Reactor meltdown maybe. One bunker housed a scavenger couple and their kid. We stared each other down in silence with our hands hovering at our holsters until the woman spoke. We broke bread and I took a breather. NCR ranger skeletons and ghoul trooper corpses were piled up in a corner. I'm heading back to Jean Sky Diving.

Turns out the NCR up on that mountain were trying to combat radiation sickness. For all their efforts, experimenting on ghouls and super mutants, they've come up with these 'experimental' rad-x pills. The capsules are a single tone of yellowish off-white, not that candy red/yellow of normal rad-x. They're also not safe to take alone, but I found out that mixing them in with a few bottles of irradiated water purifies the water. The soldiers also carry syringes of a kind of sedative or something. It helps. As if I didn't already have enough reasons to take out these guys.

DUST was honestly dogshit. FROST was a vastly superior mod, and a lot of the reason for that could be boiled down to the fact DUST is just edgy to the point of retardation for the sake of being edgy.

FROST is a Total Conversion mod that turns Fallout 4 into a pseudo survival simulator. It has a refined sanity mechanic from DUST and the Settlement system, unlike in vanillla FO4, is more about actually locating allies and building communities - or, if you'd prefer, raping and pillaging everything in sight as a Raider. There isn't really a storyline, which is very much to its benefit compared to DUST but I'll touch on that in a moment, but the game's setting in a nuclear winter just after the bombs dropped feels great. Most of the characters you meet will be other survivors you can have a variety of interactions with, some being hostile, some being wary and some being friendly and willing to trade or help, or in the worst cases, cannibals. Traversing the overworld requires either a Hazmat suit, a gasmask + rad-x/radaway (both rare) or a power armor making finding fusion cores a must. Managing your sanity affects the overall difficulty of the game, but having low sanity also is fun because of the various "events" and effects it has. It basically achieves all of the gameplay features DUST wanted, but not shit, in a winter setting. The automatron patch also makes creating robot companions/settlers a viable feature and is very fun too. DUST was bleak and despite the story being told non-linearly, the game was actually laser focused on its storyline, which was effectively just masturbatory fanfiction about how Courier 6 ended the world and how every single faction was irredeemably evil anyway and deserved it. That bleakness also translated into the world and level design, which was all dark (literally) and covered in a pink fart filter. In contrast, FROST is almost colorful with how the environment pops so well with the white backdrop of the irradiated killer blizzards and the game feels almost hopeful. Like one day this world - even if you divorced it from the fallout setting and knowing how it'll end up - could get better.

I can't even tell why i'm bothering to grind the raid at this point, i have almost all the vulcan plans but don't even use the suit, my season rank is over 150 and i'm already over-encumbered from all the rewards.
Since they're ruining vats next season i probably won't be able to use the robot to grind the rank and therefore will likely never do it again. Unless that mod to lie about the vat percentages works and i can still shoot the cunt from the front, or hollow out the torso to get to the generator.

I love NV with all my heart (I still return to my first proper character periodically, just to wander around. I'm pretty autistically attached to him), but I did enjoy the gameplay of 4, hoarding junk and building, finding interesting unique items and displaying them at the base. My ironman mode Elijah character died in the Sierra Madre when he got cornered by a security hologram in the Madre's vault. It was the last one too before you reach the vault itself. A shame but at least his death was kind of fitting.

So I decided to tweak my cursed Judy head mod and now I can wear hats and whatnot with the head on. The trick was to just make a custom race with no head at all, and keep this mask on at all times. If I wear a helmet that covers the entire head, I'll just take the mask off. I've decided to try and complete a run with this character (guns, sneak, speech, good natured, small frame). 70% the normal size, faster than normal run speed to compensate for height, and a boosted jump height. I also added a basic climbing mod that scales with your agility. The gist is something like every point into AGL adds 0.2 seconds of climbing time. If you have average agility it's only really good for climbing up boxes and small rock faces. Judy has decent agility so she can shinny up a lot of the scenery. Almost died to Barton Thorn (he got me down to 1 HP) but he stepped on a bear trap while chasing me and died. A fitting death for him.

I'm operating on light Robocop rules (Serve the public trust, protect the innocent, uphold the law). I decided to make tranquilizer ammo for the .22LR guns (which the varmint rifle falls under in the Jsawyer Ultimate mod) to try and be sort-of pacifist. It's effectively re-skinned incendiary ammo, only instead of fire damage it's fatigue damage. Crafted via 16 .22 bullets and 1 med-x (gives 16 tranq rounds). Inflicts 51 fatigue damage a second for 15 seconds. Knocks enemies out in about 5 seconds, keeps em down for about 40. Someone else made a mod that lets you loot stunned/unconscious people, and combined the tranq rounds are kinda fucking broken. Just tranq, strip, headshot, repeat.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to balance it. I'm leaning towards simply requiring 1 med-x per tranquilizer round.

I feel like sniper is less like a build and more just a weapon choice. Meaning you can use sniper rifles as both an energy weapons user or a cowboy user. A really underrated cowboy perk is Quick Draw. Because your weapons reload each time you switch them, you can just take 2 revolvers with you, hotkey them, and alternate between them when you run out of ammo for the current one. I cannot believe I slept on that perk for this long. You just never stop shooting.

The prewar America of Fallout was a literal fascist state, not a redditor conception of it but an actual shadow government dictatorship. There was mass plagues, massacres of the civilian populace, scientific experimentation on civilians with new substances, etc. The “wacky 50s retro” stuff was basically limited to their propaganda and advertising to contrast against the reality of where the country had fallen. The nation itself was a shit hole that was awful to live in for most people even prior to the nuclear war. If anything it gave a chance for society to come back better. The whole story of Fallout 76 was about how fucked Appalachia was before the bombs fell. All of the shit that happened did so locally before any nukes dropped. Environmental disasters, worker oppression and class divide, man-made genocidal robotic rebellion, special interest deals with megacorporations and property developers gentrifying the population, government armed suppression. You would never have seen such unrest recorded on anything in any other Fallout game. Most of the additional damage on the surviving civilization was done so by the Raiders, Mutants, Robotic Uprising, and Scorch Beast pandemic, with unchecked pollution that gave ghoulification, but there is still records of the whole Appalachia region still populated and intact years before the player character emerged from the unlocked vault.
