Should? No. But it will, especially if you're doing sequels that are still related, something has to be set in stone. Dragon Age is proof of the mess it can become if you bother to account for every single choice the player has made.

No because it creates situations like BG3. It might be hard to write around previous events of prior games but that's just one of the unique challenges of making a series of games writers should just get used to. You don't want to invalidate the choices of players. Still on the topic of BG, could you imagine a BG4 where it's like
>Shadowheart canonically died on the mindflayer ship and you just got the deus ex machina box

Crpgs are honestly really easy when you have played 3-4 because they all follow the same pattern in some way
>going first is always good
>hybrid builds bad (sometimes okay if you know what you are doing)
>never spread out your characters abilities/skills/talents/levels
>martial classes carries early game
>mages/spell casters OP mid-late game but useless early
>support/buffers always makes your party strong
>never waste turns trying to CC something when you can just DPS instead
>always play aggressively
etc...

This is the only thing I commonly see that I (many thousands of hours over many CRPGs) don't necessarily agree with. I can sometimes see the point but I don't think it's always necessarily true, and even more importantly, it often ends up being a very one-dimensional way of playing which at least for me, can end up being really tedious.
But I also don't think choosing mass Hold Monster over some massive damage spell is choosing to gimp myself either. Consider the fact that now *everyone* in the party can (attempt to) coup de grace, for instance. This may end up being quite a lot more powerful than just (attempting to) spam damage.
Also if charm/dominate is considered under CC, I think it's by far the most powerful type of mechanic in CRPGs. Immediately not only reducing the enemy ranks, but also increasing your own... Is massive and even OP in many cases.
In Pillars it gets pretty interesting due to all the buff/debuff over time things that can go on, and suddenly you might accidentally be hulking out some charmed enemy who moments later will turn back against you, ... But that danger and consideration also adds to the fun. And if you're careful you can avoid it, or just deal with it.

>Should 'canon' runs exist?
I think so, yeah. Because the alternatives are
>every choice mattered and carry over
Which is really cool, but I have no doubt about it snowballing very quickly like it did for Dragon Age

or

>All of your choices are canon :^)
Which means none of them are and almost nothing can be referenced from the previous game in a way that isn't the most vague bullshit. That can be fine if it's supposed to take place somewhere or sometime where those events are barely remembered or heard of, though.

But of course then you run the risk of absolute dogshit runs being canon like BG3 with Sarevok relapsing into incest and Viconia remaining completely unchanged. (Being a Pally and cuddling the Neutral Evil out of her is the best thing in BG2)

Before I got rambling I also wanted to add to your list, focusing down on one enemy is almost always better than scattering damage around. Almost always, enemy attack potential is the same for them at full health or almost dead, so something like facing 6 almost dead enemies is considerably worse than facing 2 healthy/4 dead enemies.
I can't think of any exceptions to this off the top of my head except JA3 using Heavy Wounds which applies to enemies as well as your party.

I don't think it matters at all. What matters is your reputation in respect to your companion's alignment, but not your alignment itself. But if you want to "content max" just don't pick Cleric or Paladin, as they can lose their powers if they're not the correct alignment - but even then I wouldn't sweat over it.

I'm neutral on canon runs existing, I'd rather they didn't but they don't bother me that much. The thing that rubs me the wrong way is people treating it like that means its the "right" way to play. Who gives af whats canon, its an rpg. The whole point is to make your own story and experience.
>>536821157
I like playing evil just because the companions are more fun but it honestly doesn't matter. The game plays out pretty much the same no matter what. Good is kind of easy mode because higher reputation gives you discounts in stores and evil party members leave if your rep gets too high.

There are minor differences actually. You'll get slightly different sequences and (very minor, almost not worth mentioning) powers.
I think BG1 (and into BG2) is best played with a good amount of RP, so the 'best' is just having a solid character and really doing whatever they'd do. Don't take out-of-character options for some kind of reward or anything like that... Don't take companions that your character wouldn't, don't do quests that your character wouldn't.
I think this is the funnest way to play.
That and a couple mods...

Man, people keep repeating this but I just don't see it.
I recently replayed it and was taken aback by how little that was a thing, after that narrative going for so many years I was expecting a literal novel. No, it was on pretty much the same level as any CRPG. Maybe a little more text-heavy? But less than Disco Elysium, less than Planescape: Torment. Honestly I even felt more fatigued by the reading in RT than I did in Pillars.
I really don't understand the "THEY POUR 30,000 PAGES OF LORE ONTO YOU" thing.

I have my complaints about Pillars but it's never been the lore or amount of reading.
Sad that so many anons here didn't like it, but I also know from sitting in this thread all the time that a lot of anons have liked it, too. I enjoyed it the first time I played it and also on my replay.

In my first playthrough when it came out, towards the end, after a restart or two, I eventually just put it down to Easy to cruise through.
In my recent playthrough I think I knew to expect the bad encounter design, so I didn't mind it as much? It's still bad and something they did better with Deadfire. But, I was more able to just accept it and try a few different tactics or something, or just accept it as a short little grind. A few areas in the White March gave me a hell of a time, but mostly the challenge was right about perfect for me on PotD and my preferred unoptimal way of playing.

Not in the WH40k universe, because there's no nuance or depth to it. Demons bad, always, without an exception. It makes them okay as a constantly looming background threat but you can't make an interesting story out of it since it will always be "oh cultists pop up, but as we all know demons bad, so we kill everyone and won't even bother including a cultist perspective into this story because why bother when demons bad" or just straight up horror in the vein of "demons are doing scary demon things niggerman save me".

>Why is Chaos considered the big bad of 40k again?
It really isn't. It just has a lot of exposure, same deal with Marines. Until recently Chaos was stuck in a small space asshole too. Tyranids are the biggest threat, since they are here it means that they devoured and absorbed at least one galaxy (their own) and so it's essentially another galaxy worth of Nids invading Milky Way. Necrons are right after with reality cheats and science defying understanding. Nobody managed to genocide Orks for 60 000 000 years and they were a constant threat to everyone and forming their empires all the time. Unlike whfb where Chaos is actually some eldritch, primordial threat, In 40k Chaos are just some nascent godlings created by space Elves, godlings which only really came to power not even 10k years ago and only really due to Imperium. Even background weird aliens are a bigger threat, like Enslavers, which actually killed the most powerful species in galaxy and scoured almost entire galaxy of life.

Living Saints are the ones with glowing halos and fire shooting out of their weapons, but your regular SoB can still perform what they call Acts of Faith, which can mean anything from bending a bullet away from vital organs to having the Emperor guide their weapon so it's more accurate and making their sword hit harder. Exile is irrelevant gal and dies like a jobber.

Revan was about to kill the emperor, but the Sith turncoat that worked with him gets a vision that someone else will truly finish the emperor(MC of SWTOR) and backstabs Revan, remains in Emperor's service.
Revan was imprisoned and tortured by the emperor.
He escapes and tries to do a plan to kill the emperor, gets merked in a low level SWTOR raid. He gets split in light and dark halves, light half helps your team to stop dark half in post game raid.
He is finally dead, achieving nothing

As in 'sudden confession dialogue option out of nowhere' or 'you did my companion quest so let's go to bed together' or 'you killed the goblins so we're all going to offer you sex right now despite having shown no prior interest.'

Any romance path should require multiple checks (including charisma checks for most characters), a chance of outright failure and a decent bit of time and effort behind a lot of prior dialogue and events to succeed. Otherwise the writers are just shitting on their own characters.

You'd weight the difficulty such that playing 100% puritan is effectively a challenge run and that some compromise with Chaos is near-essential. That way you get most players in a 'shades-of-grey' rather than a binary mindset about it. Then you make the rewards of Chaos corruption extremely attractive while constantly dangling the notion that you can always 'get away with' a little more corruption without going full heretic. Then, later on, actually falling to Chaos yourself becomes a serious threat and something which is harder to avoid the more corruption you've allowed. There's loads of interesting stuff you could do with this concept.

Player character kiss the love interest, they do a fistbump and say
>Finally, Anon is going to win! Yes, Anon, kiss that pretty dolly! You're the best! You're the main character!
Or, do they instead say

No, I'm saying that what you're saying is what's interesting about the Ordo Malleus is literally what Calcazar spent the whole time in RT doing, as an Ordo Xenos inquisitor. Which just drives back to the point of why Ordo Xenos is way more popular and won, because Ordo Xenos has infinitely more variety in the amount of scenarios you might deal with, including the sole scenario you can picture for Ordo Malleus which is "accept a little bit of corruption for other benefits".

Also even that scenario sounds like something more proper of the Ordo Hereticus than the Malleus. Ordo Malleus are very rarely going to see demons offering them deals.

Sure, but what's I'm describing is one of the core tropes of 40k which hasn't seen a decent implementation in a game yet. You should really feel like you are fighting in a severely weakened state as a full puritan. DoW II tried this a little bit in the expansion but the mechanic was barely there.

I'm saying that instead of observing the temptation/corruption process in a side character, you could actually build the game around it happening to the player. And the advantage of Ordo Malleus is that it's all about the insidious influence of the unknown, daemons beyond your comprehension and all that. Xenos is where 'doing deals' (yet another precarious alliance with the Eldar) happens in nu-40k, and Hereticus would probably be more about joining or taking over an existing cult than something novel centred around the PC

That should actually be the most narratively engaging path to take where your character is torn between one extreme and the other, but it always results in you just missing out on stuff.

On a related point, I don't get why they didn't give Greybor a much more monstrous point buy at least, given how late you get him. Throwing companions at you late in the game runs counter to how most people play these games, like once you have an established party and got used to it for 50-60 hours why would you change anything up unless the companion had huge mechanical benefits and/or was very compelling. Greybor is talked up as a super efficient assassin, but he's just a shitty, squishy dwarf deep into a class that can't really be pivoted into anything else.

Or here's another idea. Combine this with what I was describing in the last thread about a proper 40k plot involving humanity fighting a losing battle. Have a Puritan party steadily get weaker over time, relatively speaking, as resources, map areas, and companions fall to Chaos. That way you need to succumb to some level of corruption just to 'stand still' against the difficulty curve. Maybe later enemies have abilities that can only be countered, defended against, or weaknesses which can only be exploited via some degree of daemonic corruption.

The biggest problem I'd see is giving the player compelling mechanical/non-narrative reasons to toe the line as a Radical instead of diving in full heretic.

They also probably just wanted to showcase the monk class but couldn't find any other fitting companion for it; it's weird they didn't make a cavalier companion as well to showcase mounted combat, but Seelah already fits the "valorous soldier" archetype and she's an iconic so her class is locked
Funnily enough your observations apply to Trevor as well (and kinda Galfrey), but at least in KM the very last companion you get (Nok-Nok) is perfectly viable from the get-go

Not quite. I did romance both and I ended up disappointed with Wendu for expecting her to be like Vic. Wendu is deeply insecure about her power and doesn't mind playing second fiddle to the strongest so long as it gets her an upperhand, so much so that after Act 2 she just turns into Starscream until Act 4 or 5, when she gets the chance to try and one-up you, or convert you into being retarded like she is, which is survival brain in overdrive. I still like her, and did romance her, but she's a lot "sneakier" than Viconia.

As for Vic herself, she's the "once bitten, twice shy", but she's been bitten 30 times over. She grew up being the alpha bitch, like Wendu, but she legit, deep down, wanted to create a real connection with someone and not just obtain more power. She thought she had it with her family in the Underdark, but she was betrayed. Then she fled to the surface, befriended two farmers (a dad and his son) and then when they found out she was a Drow they immediately tried to kill her. So she is disillusioned and jaded, but you can pull her out of her shell.

They've said that most of the game will take place on the planet but there will be portions of the game where you go somewhere else. I can imagine something similar to Commorragh, Alushinyrra or an epilogue chapter.
>thats inherently smaller scale than the RT galavanting around the kronous expanse
I mean, size wise yes but not necessarily scope wise. There could easily be something you discover/investigate on the planet could threaten multiple star systems. Like finding something similar a c'tan shard hidden deep inside the planet could very well happen.

I can't imagine a world in where the stakes for the Imperium in Dark Heresy aren't as high as Rogue Trader. RT's stakes required High Inquisitor to personally intervene and in this game you'll become the Inquisitor so the stakes will be higher.

Two ranks.
You're either an inquisitor or an inquisitor's bitch.
If you're an inquisitor then the more friends you have the weight your words have.
If you're an inquisitor's bitch then the longer you survive the more you're valued.

Eventually inquisitors will kill each other for being too pure or not pure enough and then they'll promote their bitches.

>Interrogator
an Acolyte given more authority, basically officially recognized as a likely future Inquisitor. They can be part of the Inquisitor's personal retinue or they might lead their own retinues of Acolytes, like Interrogator Rannick does in Darktide. They sometimes carry the Inquisitor's Rosette and act directly with his authority.

Imperial politics are actually pretty interesting and like in reality are not this straightforward.
Inquisitors claim their authority directly from the Emperor and view themselves as as the highest active authority but in reality barely have any control over the High Lords, Mechanicus, Astartes, Navigators or Custodes.
Custodes are formally an Adeptus but carry an ancient legal right known as Magisterium Lex Ultima that makes them pretty equivalent to the Inquisition. Imperial religion also makes them so super duper holy that Inquisitor Genocidium Maximus can't rely on fear of the Inquisition overtaking the orgamic religious bliss a crowd would experience upon seeing one.
The Mechanicus was demoted to an Adeptus due to the leadership of the Mechanicum turning against Terra during the Heresy but they are still practically a separate empire that polices itself. Inquisitors can't do much about them, the Fabricator General is the second most powerful High Lord and they have concentrated much more power under a single leader than any other section of the Imperium.
The Master of the Administratum is the most powerful High Lord by far, powerful enough that many of his direct subordinates are also High Lords giving him the majority vote in most situations. They even have their own pet space marine chapter they give all the relics and geneseed they want so they can stomp down on other chapters when necessary.
The Navis Nobilite have an outsized amount of influence despite their "low" station due to having direct control over all military traffic and long distance Warp travel despite being despicable mutants. They are richer than Rogue Traders and usually have a spot at the High Lords.

Don't murder people or do overtly evil things because that ruins your ranger oath or something.
Dex is your stat for hitting things.
Con gives you more hp and since you're a warrior the hp gains don't cap out at 16 like other classes.
Strength is nice for equipping compound bows but doesn't do much else.

I don't think spiders are a good racial enemy. You really don't need hit bonuses against them. Better options would be demons or vampires or even dragons since those are the things you need the bonus for.

trying out NWN1 for the first time, I wanted to do a dwarven weapon master/defender who specializes in the Dwarven Waraxe, starting with Shadows of Undrentide because I hear the wailing death is dogshit. I went into the smithy in the starting village to buy some waraxes and she doesn't have any in stock, and when I checked online to see where I could get an early one I learned they were added in the Hordes of the Underdark, does that mean there are no dwarven waraxes at all in Shadows? if so I might need to remake my character, both my starting feats as fighter went into exotic weapon proficiency and weapon focus for the waraxes, which is really strange I can even do that if the weapons aren't present in this campaign at all

Nobody promised that the world was going to rain magic dwarven waraxes during his adventure! Is he really going to give up just because he is only skilled with this special weapon that he doesn't have? Is that all it takes for evil to triumph, for good men to surrender their agency, for democracy to fail?
My Kingmaker playthrough I made a paladin/aldori swordlord starting with coordinated maneuvers and coordinated defense, and not once did I realise I was supposed to use the dueling sword without a shield nor that NONE of the swordlords traits would transfer to other weapons. >Red and orange routes result in a battle most of the time.
I meant that you're not warp jumping that often. Red is a guaranteed battle (unless you pay with cargo) while Orange is chance based. Orange paths are actually worse than Red because they sometimes require you to give up cargo or take unavoidable ship damage while Red has no downsides if you pick the fight.
>You don't need to farm reputation since everything is gated behind profit factor
Profit factor was always a non-issue - outside the very early part of act 2 - while reputation was the limiting factor. I struggled to max out all the factions while playing, it's very doable but you have to use your resources in a smart way and choose the correct colony projects and events
>you don't need to farm party XP because the game isn't difficult enough.

I disagree that Viconia's romance would be unpopular if it was released today. She's literally lying about being a slut, and she has a happy ending and marriage with the player character. She dies soon after the game from Lolth assassins, that would be the thing people complained about. It's a tragic ending. Her lying to you in order to try to drive you away when she realities she's starting to fall in love would not be an issue. There might be a handful of people who lack media literacy so they take her literally and think it's true, they might complain about her being a slut, but unintelligent people with low media literacy is a problem regardless of decade.

Meanwhile, you have tons of games that don't have romance at all, or the romance options are bad, or you have the romance option start talking about their previous lovers during your intimate moments (it's funny that this is very specific, yet applies to multiple games from multiple developers).

Nay, Viconia would be popular if released today. So would Aerie and Jaheira.

Cassia won't call you a fucking priveledged man who should be glad he gets to starve away his life being a nobody in the Koronus expanse because he can join the imperial guard and die for Ultramar if he doesn't like the state of things.
Like I don't know is it too much to ask for a girlfriend that isn't a cold fucking cynical piece of shit that is so "practically minded" that the very concept of success and achievement is an anathema unless it is held by someone from the statistically insignificant portion of humanity that have it already?! haven't played it, no interest sorry
also I never will because it reminds me of playing Vampire: The Masquerade with my friends in a basement and it embarrasses me even to remember
This is a role I will never play.

You can jump right in, I did. I enjoyed it but the biggest thing that isn't a spoiler is that you want everyone to be highly specialized. No 'hack of all trades' at all.
Also they recommend starting 2 characters but there's no reactivity, feel free to make your own but again: pick a lane and stick to it, with everyone.

It's a very decent game, but two things really annoy me:
>basic human cultists are way too sturdy
I get that plaguemarines might be able to fight grey knights as equals, but puny little humans should've been a pure cannon fodder.
>a lot of mission feel very samey
Maybe it's maps, maybe it's objectives, maybe it's enemies, maybe everything at once.

I'm learning about "IVR" (Interactive Voice Response) and I'm finding out it's like $1/mo for a phone number and twilio is actually super easy
So like, not promising anything, but if you want to make a vocaroo about some tip about your favorite CRPG.
"Press 2 for tips about Planescape: Torment" idk whatever
it's an awful idea, simply terrible.
