Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Has anyone ever tried a map with big UW provs, but less of them? So they can raid everyone and aren't DoA since they'll have a ton of choice to leech and raid. Less oceans means less of a pain to invade if you choose to fight them as a land nation with enough research. But I could see it making them suck to play if they don't have many cap ring provs and that forces them to build a certain way. Oceans probably need set spawn points and custom tagged terrain so they spawn on a kelp forest or something

I made a spreadsheet with all the weapons a few days ago, trying to work out the internal logic of the weapon stats. I've concluded there isn't any.

Not even trying for realistic. I would at least make the weapons follow a consistent internal logic. Bronze? It *always* costs more res. Weapon has multiple damage types? Attack bonus. Weapon is very short? Defense malus. Players should be able to intuit the weapon's stats just by remembering what the logic is.

Here's some examples of the retardation in the stats

An iron cudgel has +2 def. A maul has -1 defense.

A pitchfork has -1 def. A trident has +1 def.

Jotuns have their own version of every kind of axe. Some are identical to regular axe stats, while others are different.

Yaris are the only kind of spear with an attack bonus.

Quarterstaffs have +3 def, higher than anything else. But several kids of other polearms have defense maluses.

Why don't similar weapons have similar stats?

Quarterstaves kinda make sense. Lots of Dominions is based on myth and legend rather than facts, and there's old stories about great swordmen who only ever lost a duel against a peasant with a stick.
Don't know what they were smoking with the rest, but I love that adding an additional tine to your fork makes it significantly better at defending.

There might be some implicit worldbuilding or assumptions in there, too. Like, only specific units use yari instead of normal spears. Maybe they wanted to represent that these units are particularly fanatical and aggressive, but without giving *the unit* a better attack stat. Maybe they feared it'd have some unintended consequences.
With the pitchfork and trident, for example, you could say that the kind of guy who's using a pitchfork is simply not well trained for battle. It's also a working tool, so more unbalanced, and more brittle, etc. All of that flows into a worse defense value. The trident is a weapon, and an exotic one, probably wielded by creatures who know what they're doing, AND it's a proper weapon made for war, with better materials and proper balance for fighting purposes, so it warrants a bonus instead of the penalty.
Same with axes. An axe to fell trees, an axe to clear shrubbery, a throwing axe like the francisca, a huscarl axe, and a "normal" battle axe are all different weapons. It makes sense that they have different stats.
The same thing applies to the iron cudgel and maul. The cudgel is relatively light. A maul is much more unbalanced and heavier.

Essentially, Dominions is an incredibly autistic game. The reason there's 50 different variations of the same weapon is the same reason that there's 50 different variations of "spearman" instead of a single spearman unit with a single spear weapon. The variety, and representing many historical and mythological things so they can bonk each other in little battles, is the whole point. Watching a small army of low quality Ermorian infantry fighting a small army of low quality C'tissian infantry for control over a bottleneck in the early game is a lot more satisfying than watching 50 generic infantry fighting 50 identical generic infantry.

Take an awake expander, that usually scares away people without expanders.
Be proactive in writing to them and acknowledge you're cool with borders. I tend to gravitate towards killing the guy not answering messages because I assume he's gearing to kill me (because that is what I do when I wanna kill someone).
But sometimes you're just unlucky or playing a naction people hate to fight lategame and rather off asap.

I guess, if you're too weak you will get targeted, if you're too strong you will get targeted, but writing around to people rarely hurts.
If you feel you've expanded to hard you can offer to sell the land to people that will often get them off your back, or bait out a bump and just kill the first person you see. It all depends, point is just to be proactive and not reactive. Once people have set their minds to kill you they usually will go through with it, so better meet them before that happens.

I long for a domg game that uses all types of thrones. I can't remember when was the last time I've seen a 1st lvl throne in the game. Starting playing the game last week, and I'm struggling to understand what Titans are for. Why would I pick them over a monster or inanimate pretender? They get merked by monsters when awake and give less bonuses than objects when imprisoned. Raising them as dormant doesn't seem great either since they're so limited by what gear they have and how much spell research you've done. And by turn 12 you'll have what, maybe construction 3?

Please explain why I'm a retard who doesn't know what he's talking about so I can feel justified in picking big pixel tits over big pixel snek.

They sort of do a bit of everything or have unique traits. Most of them are just really inefficient though.
The most common use for them is a dormant defender titan, which wakes up right as the first wars tend to start, and with some gear or early research can be a very good defense.
The main benefit over other chassis is they have full slots for boosters or fat lategame gear, while still being able to get a decently high dom score/scales.

Titans are practically always taken dormant for the reasons you described. Their niche is being much stronger combatants than monsters once they're kitted out with gear because many crafted weapons mog monster natural weapons and personal ironskin + high prot armor mogs monster natprot.
Problem is, being dormant means you need to either accept a worse non-incarnate bless compared to imprisoned stat stick, or use the titan on nations who can expand fine unblessed and need a rush defense that scales up with construction level and/or dormant anti-player incarnates like Magic/Unholy weapons.
This is a pretty niche use case, and it doesn't help that most of the titans, like monsters. are overshadowed or just plain bad. Sloops helps them out a lot by making new paths cost less as well as reducing their chassis costs overall.

I had an idea today. It's always annoyed me when two armies battle with flying units they just fly right past each other and go straight to their target. What if there was a second plane on the battle map for air units? So they still fly up into the next plane, move to above their target, then drop. But if they come into contact with an enemy unit in the air they get caught up in a mid-air fight. There would be some extra rules around air-fighting too, like if a Pegasus rider's mount gets a crippled wing or dies then the rider drops with the mount. For extra giggles the falling corpses should potentially injure units in the tile they fall into.

One of the easiest ways to deal with units like that is to poison them. Breath of the Dragon and the spell that enchants ranged weapons with poison damage are underrated towards this purpose. In any case, since they can just do better in melee you can adapt by throwing any kind of chaff you can afford while focusing them down with direct attack spells, debuffing/poisoning spells, and ranged units that you buff up in any way possible. Don't forget to check out if they are resistant to heat, cold, and lightning; If you can easily summon Fire Elementals and his key units have no resistance against fire damage then you are off to the races, even moreso if they do not have magic weapons. If you cannot deal with them directly, then deal with them indirectly by making big blocks of units to bog them down with while you sling everything that you can at them from relative safety.

Got ''rushed'' by MA Ulm once and didn't have much research but did manage to get Evo4 in time.
Boy howdy does that spell absolutely nuke them. My biggest complaint with it isn't even a problem of the spell itself, just how AoE spells are (only the 1st targeted area must be an enemy, all other ones are just random chosen around it) so half the time you're poisoning your own dudes as well.

Individually powerful sacreds or good scales troops with an awake expander.
Giants and cav (and a few other exceptions like chud skinshifters or nidders) let you spend the most gold per holy point and have low attrition, so they're good for a rush. If the holy point system wasn't ass there would be a lot more human sacreds who could be viable to rush with, but it is ass so there aren't.
Good scales troops + awake expander means a giga expansion that funds a powerful army and a powerful fighting god. LA Pan is one of the best examples. Many nations just lose to Grove Guard spam, even before you start buffing them.

The ingame diplomacy is there only so you can play with ai in single player.
You should never use it in mp under any circumstances, since it just gives the other guy an opportunity to reject your nap and you lose some dominion score.
Even on discord they don't use in game diplomacy. They just use the nap system that is generally agreed upon on the servers, but you can still betray a nap and not be breaking any game rules. The people playing will just remember that you are a NAP breaker if they ever end up in a game with you again, which is honestly pretty rare anyway.
Domg is anything goes, but most people here will still respect any diplomatic agreements anyway.
The only hard rule that is common everywhere is that if you agree to an item/gem trade with another player, you are absolutely expected to honor it. Having trades allows for a lot of good and interesting things to happen, and if you can't even trust another player for a trade the game is just worse off.

MAns_world admin, are you sure you want to use this number of thrones? One throne per player is okay if they are all equal, but with all lvls it stops working. I would recommend 19-9-6 thrones for a nice spread (and because lvl 1are easy enough to take them fast so they can easily be one per player).
