Kodaka likes writing thematic foils with rivalries of mutual interest. Most of the time, these characters are the same gender. He has a very impassioned way of presenting this from a lifetime of shonen manga, where this already happens regularly. The rest is history.

In short, its a happy accident of his other writing priorities. Although I can't help but feel that by the time of Hundred Line, he's a bit more cognizant of how well-received it is and is doing it more intentionally now.

Takumi and Eito feel like the first time he's done it on purpose. It's mostly fine but comes across as slightly contrived with a transparent motivation. Compared to past examples where it was a bit more organic.
