The game simply calculates and enacts the actions of the NPCs so fast that it's essentially simultaneous.
I can't think of a single roguelike where the NPC actions are pre-determined/not affected by gamestate to the extent that they are thus executed simultaneously with your action (once chosen)
If you play chess against a computer and it instantly completes a move as soon as you make a move it's not a "simultaneous turn"
It's still a turn-based action sequence.

Almost all builds are much harder to get off the ground until you're in a high enough cycle to gets heaps of glory in one or two levels, in all seriousness, imo
I do think that a handful of prestiges (and more specifically, most mono-element conducts), including most of the martial+element prestiges are really hard to win with while remaining on theme.
"Remaining on theme" because of course you can always Druid+Starcult and bruteforce nearly any other heap of garbage powers/items on nearly any cycle

When I reset my save file I actually had more trouble than I expected at cycle 17-24. 32 is still the most likely to one shot you, but the mid cycles have their own challenge because you don't have as many levels to work with.
Though if the game was only cycle 1 I think it would be a pretty bad game. That's just the dev excuse telling people not to send him balance complaints.

I think you'd have more difficulty with a lot of things and a lot less options stuck at Cycle 1, for sure.
We wouldn't see a lot of builds, just because they'd be practically impossible to survive long enough to come online (or never come online at all, due to expense) no matter what order of items/enemy spawns you got.
But yeah, sure. I think that's fair. Player power goes up pretty fast until the mid-teens and then tapers off- By then though, you should also be cruising on enough game knowledge that you don't need half the glory you get to begin with (nevermind that a lot of synergies see negligible increases in power by dumping points into the powers anyways)
You can either handle 2,000 speed mobs or not, you can either handle 40k hit teleporting assholes or not and you know how to route and path better, so on.
I dunno. I think Gothi is an easier clear on higher Glory but also...

No, it's hypothetically possible.
Consider "simulturn tic-tac-toe"
You start with a grid of 9 spaces. You and your opponent both select a space. If you select separate spaces, you each get those spaces and then check for winning formations. If you and your opponent both select the same space, then you both get that space. Spaces occupied by either player can no longer be selected.
The primary difference is that your choice is not revealed and the effects of your turn are not calculated until your opponent has also taken their turn.
Very very few games function this way. Primarily, rock-paper-scissors functions this way, along with most computerized versions of the game. However, there is only one turn in that particular case.

Roguelikes look like simulturn but there is actually an order of operations under the surface, the results are just calculated and presented the moment you press that number key so it looks simultaneous.
I just realized I maybe don't really like Roguelikes
Roguelikes are "run based" games where the gameplay loop is changed each time thanks to possible upgrades obtained at the end of single runs which can then be used in the next ones
it is a genre that made use of technical limitations back in the days: few levels sometimes procedurally generated that becomes a strength thanks to this loop
they are sometimes characterized by ASCII graphics more or less simple with strong focus on inventory management
the action is turn based and most of the game relies on combat and exploration
now I did not have much experience with these games I pictured them as more arcade y if that makes sense and something that could give me a good dose of fun
honestly it did not happen like that I tried CoQ Stoneshard JHC even CDDA but these games do not click with me
I do understand though why they appeal to other people

Roguelites are strongly differentiated from roguelikes by meta-progression: Unlocking items depending on run performance metrics that can then drop in the base game.
Few edge cases exist.
ASCII being a characteristic of roguelikes is a holdover (purely because no concerted effort to contest it has been made, especially with roguelites diluting the community so deeply, imo) from when almost every tileset for a roguelike sucked AND (possibly more importantly) that many roguelikes were designed with play via telnet or similar terminal based applications on some of the earliest networks in mind- And thus setting up to display tiles rather than draw the map with ASCII characters was somewhat impractical.
This is also where the "keyboard based, no mouse controls" thing comes from and is ALSO (imo) no longer a strongly defining characteristic.
If you want something more arcadey- if you're for some reason some newb hanging around in a graveyard oldfag general still -try Dungeons of Dredmor (piracy is illegal anon)(the company went out of business years ago) or Tome4 (the supporter class/expansions are kind of mid desu, but the otherwise full featured game is free)
Or just regular Jupiter Hell. Don't fuckin start out with JHC, JHC was made to appease literal tryhard old school fanatics.
Or DCSS- You can auto-explore/tab through a lot of DCSS, play MiBe to learn the ropes more. O-Tabbing MiBe in DCSS is top-tier arcade gameplay. Same with Tome4, premium autoexplore gameplay.
No shame in just sticking to FTL or Tiny Rogues or Dead Cells if you can't handle turnbased tilebased gaybased games

Roguelikes and roguelites should reallllly be considered two separate things- But roguelikes (these little tile based turnbased things) are such a comparatively niche genre that nobody really cared to differentiate them when breakout hits like Spelunky, Slay the Spire, FTL, etc were having such AMAZING success with marketing themselves that way- A lot of people would say those should be called roguelites, for clarity (the same way we switched from "doomlike" to "FPS"): Run based permadeath, unlockables, difficult, big learning curve, finnicky and complex mechanics, procgen pseudorandom gearing and levels, etc.
Rest assured, if you search for roguelike on Steam or something, you'll 90% get what you like. 99% if you ignore anything that looks tilebased. Some few games are also tagged as "roguelite" but it's kind of hit and miss owing to aforementioned lackluster adoption efforts by normies and normie marketers.

Unlocking of new levels doesn't actually change the resources your character has in a particular run. If you select the same level, you get the same experience, and it is in no way easier to win any level.
While a more pure rougelike experience would not have unlockable levels/run types and would not have persistent information for the crafting of items, both manage to avoid attacking the point of the genera. The recipes are there, even if you can't look at them, and correct play is not altered based on how many levels you have unlocked.

Not so, just people being flippant with their words.
Games, even in the same genera, are not the same in the way that matters. Like, "racing game" is really conceptually easy, but there's a pretty big difference between mario cart (a simple cartoony game with random items that add chaos and violence to the game), trackmania (tiny little tracks which are different each week where people compete for the fastest possible times by repeatedly driving very tight and specific racing-paths), and Forza Horizon (realistic game with realistic cars where you collect every irl car in existence by running laps against other humans. )
The things which appeal to people about each of these games are wildly different, and so it isn't enough to see what the genera is and then decide if you like the game or not.
Finding a game you would personally like is just naturally difficult.

Hey, you don't like the rouges you've played. Remember the difference. There's still something that drew you to them in the first place, and maybe you can find that, if you keep your heart open.
There's no rush. The definitions don't rule you, but serve you instead.

Finally had the time to play some more Jupiter Hell classic and I went for the Angel of Marksmanship UV challenge.
Got a Combat Handgun on my first game, but there was a blackout and the game doesn't autosave, so I had to start again.
Got a Deagle at some point and since I was going for a Sharpshooter build, ammo wasn't much of a concern so it was viable for the rest of the game. I still had to play with a normal gun for a good amount since I wanted to keep most of my .44 ammo for the last levels.
With Sharpshooter lvl 3 you can oneshot absolutely anything with an aimed shot, and at lvl 2 you also can if you invested some P mods into your weapon. I was aiming to make a Deagle with AP3 to check out how good the Demolition Rounds assembly was, but I never found a 3rd P mod.
I think that's one of my problems with this game. It feels like a really, really small version of DoomRL. There's less special levels to gather mods or rare weapons/mods, so trying to make an assebly other than Tactical Boots is almost never a thng that happens. A shame, since Whizkid seems pretty good in this game and you could do a run around it if the game had more ways to get mods.

In any case, Sharpshooter is OP enough to carry you, even if you have some bad luck with mods.
As long as you find a .762 sidearm or a plasma gun at some point, you're good to go.
Any exotic gun is a guaranteed win, as long as you don't get spawned in the middle of a bunch of monsters, or get swarmed by revived ones. To mitigate some of that bad luck, try to get Hellrunner once you get Sharpshooter, or after Sharpshooter+Whizkid 1 if you have a couple of P mods. Always have a couple of phase devices and envirosuits in case things get dicey. And with a couple of large medkits in your inventory as a guarantee, you can easily beat the last boss without even using aimed shots, but you can use them in its last phase because you can knock it back at that point and never get hit.
Now, I'll try Angel of Berserk to see how melee was reworked/balanced.

Implementation vs presentation. The video's pegged an important factor in presentation, which is that you don't have to sit there and watch the "other side" make their moves, like you do in most turn-based games. How it works under the hood isn't all that important

Yes, I know how they work, I'm a game dev. The description he's using isn't perfect, but it's describing what the genre feels like. Most traditional turn-based games take great care to show you everything your opponents are doing, 'cause it's important.
But roguelikes have very small, granular turns, and can have huge numbers of enemies, so from a UI standpoint it's necessary to skim over the 136 ants each taking one step towards the player and get to the player's turn so he can take one step.
Sure, it's kinda stupid from a technical standpoint, but it's a wholly workable way of describing the difference in gameplay IMO

Fire Emblem falls on the wrong side of Path of Achra- Instanced battles, lots of weird control modality, player "fields units" rather than "controls (a) character(s)" and it has an excessively structured story and gameplay progression- Entering and exiting levels is rarely at the player's sole discretion, for example.
It's more of a sliding scale than a uh, categorical checklist, right? You can have "roguelike elements" and not "be a roguelike" and it doesn't have to be a gotcha moment.
This naming convention, defining genres thing is to help people figure out what games they might like. It's not some... competition. Not every game needs to be shoehorned as a "soulslike" to sell 22% more units.
I think Path of Achra is a fine example for pushing the boundaries of what a roguelike is, in fact. I think it is.

And I'm really just trying to accurately describe a genre I'm intimately familiar with. Specifically I dislike simulturn because it implies a mechanical interaction that isn't there and has, as I recall, featured heavily in several "introduction to roguelikes" across forum posts, videos and even in roguelike Help files as a "common misconception" people have when they first see how most roguelikes typically play.
I'm open to working towards a compromise- Can you think of some more apt phrase to indicate that the player's turn is the central focus of the game and that enemy turns are executed quickly and without lengthy animations? And no, my game isn't in the genre. I just fucking love roguelikes. I played Rogue back when it was state of the art, I beat Larn, I ascended in Nethack.

Slowly coming together-
One of the gutsmongers at Six Day coughed up an electric generator, so now I've got my Masterwork Phasecannon Jacked up. Scrounged together the bits to fit an antimatter cell with a Radio for it, too, so I'm blasting.

After splatting for the whole day trying to beat AoB with 100% kills on UV, I've determined it's almost impossible to do it without some kind of extreme luck involved. Berserk powerups barely spawned in the first 4 levels during all of my runs, and when I was able to get the Berserk trait, I was never able to make it work. I don't really know how many times you have to hit "popcorn" (can't even call them popcorn because I was never able to kill things in a single hit, even with Brute 3) but I was only triggering it irregularly after hitting like 6 times or more without moving from the spot I was. In DoomRL it was like 4 hits to trigger it, so I hoped it would be more in that ballpark.
Talking about DoomRl, it was also pretty hard to get an UV AoB run going in there, with Hell Knights appearing in level 3 to eat all of your medpacks and your armors, but it was doable if you could trigger Berserk in the actual popcorn that did die in one hit with only Brute 2.
And if you could get to the Chained Court in level 4 you could pick up the Chainsaw at the start of the level, which was your ultimate answer to everything from there on.
In JHC you can pick up a Machete if you clear one of the special levels fully, but you have to clear them with your knife that can't oneshot anything and since powerups spawn rarely in this game, you're bound to reach those special levels badly hurt and with little to no medpacks left, so even if you somehow get the Machete at the end of the level, you're not gonna last long after that, since the Machete doesn't have the same stopping power the Chainsaw had and you're gonna fight against the equivalent of Revenants with that.
TL;DR: AoB UV seems to be unbeatable at 100% kills right now, or at least incredibly dependant on either luck or... well, just luck.
Maybe it will change in a later update, but unless you do some Stealth cheese strats, don't bother trying it now.

The point isn't that the turns are mechanically simultaneous but that they effectively are and perceived as such.
Quasimorph's missions are incredibly roguelike in most of their aspects, but multi-action turns make the game play way different and much closer to a tactical shooter like XCOM than to what most people perceive as a roguelike game.
The decision of not processing actions actually simultaneously is merely a design choice as most actions in roguelike games are instant and simply induce a "turn cooldown" on completion.
The energy systems used by modern roguelikes can easily support queued actions with activation and duration times resulting in a possibility of things happening truly simultaneously.
It's just actually implementing that in a genre with traditionally minimal visual feedback would result in nothing but frustration and confusion, hence why no one does it.
It's not anywhere close to being an actual genre-defining characteristic and neither is it an actual meaningful mechanical aspect.

My argument when taken directly and accepted, points out that the "turns appearing to be simultaneous" are genre-defining for roguelikes.
It again, retard, can be easily demonstrated by taking something like a TBS and inspecting the gameplay difference switching turns to simultaneous (i.e. asynchronous) would create.
Because, retard, it should be clear (yes, even to someone as retarded as you are), that the change would create a MASSIVE gameplay difference for a TBS.
That wouldn't change the genre, because "TBS" is an incredibly wide umbrella and the specifics of "turns" literally do not matter on that level. But it would create enough of a difference to engage or completely turn off large groups of people on that distinction alone.
Meanwhile, in a roguelike, the distinction between turns being or not being actually simultaneous will amount to noise. If you provide a way of clearly telegraphing the state of enemy actions as well as allow the player to quickly and precisely estimate the "startup" of theirs, it'd be a nearly universal improvement.
In ToME4 you can literally get killed after you make your turn that was supposed to kill or disable the enemy that ultimately killed you due to the projectile travel time I've mentioned before.
You are literally failing to comprehend how is something paramount to the gameplay experience expected from the genre happens to constitute the definition of the genre, while something that has literally no effect on the aforementioned gameplay experience expected doesn't.
I can't explain it further than that. We're hitting the point of you being required to not be retarded enough to understand what words mean.

Well, forget everything I said. It turns out you can actually win AoB UV 100% kills without extreme cheese, but the answer was to not use Berserk at all! Or at least not at the start.
Seems like the actual play was to get Angry Mofo since that trait gives you a shitload of damage, much more than getting Brute 3 and the only condition to have that massive damage is to be at half health more or less, which you're probably gonna be most of the time even if you don't want to. It also has Tough as Nails as a requisite, so you get pretty tanky even if you're at low health.
I probably should've changed to my katana for the final hit to complete the cosplay, though...

The trick to survive the first levels is to throw knives at everything from a corner, then you punch them when they come near you and then you recover your knife. Use your adrenaline if there's a lot of enemies or if you're trying to punch a Reaver. Rinse and repeat.
If you reach the Valhalla Command or the Millitary Barracks, you can camp one of the starting doors, drop a used armor at the door and bait zombies into trying to pick it up to get them in meee range so you don't get completely obliterated by going into the open field yourself.
After getting the Machete, you're probably gonna be good to go for whatever traits you want. I didn't even need the Master Trait during that run but I had to commit to the cosplay.
I had like 20 large medpacks at the end of that run, probably could've used a couple of them at some points but I was greedy.

It's good for stuff like demonic crawlers who are immune to toxic radiance, just spam it until they're dead. Currently desperately trying to level my skills to get crystal spear and spellforged servitor online. Even with Vehumet it's taking forever to get them cashable.
I had ran a disco wizard awhile back who had toxic radiance, ignite posion, and noxious bog. Noxious bog is water, and since he was a merfolk it gave him a huge boost to EV, and then on top of that I had an amulet of acrobatics that I wore the entire game. One of the most overpowered characters I've ever run, basically every encounter was trivial, sit in middle of box, keep moving back and forth for the acrobatics + merfolk tail EV boost, toxic radiance for the enemies who wouldn't enter the bog and stood on the edges, and ignite posion just as a final "Fuck you" to anything still standing.
He died in a Vaults: 4 desolation of salt portal after getting overwhelmed by enemies.

...I think ether is just a griefclock. Get yourself potions of antibodies when you can- they restock in the dwarf workshop if you can find medals (only replenishable from farming silver bells I think, use poison to delete them through their high turncount), for a moderate price in casinos (max out the throwing game and you can earn one every three throws), the strange little girl sells for a nice influence price and uh... Ecopo shop, at a higher price.
Abuse all of these and you should be able to power through all your mutations, 2 or 3 at a time. The ether potions delete the most recent 2 (3 if blessed) I think, so if you stay with no mutations when you get one of the good ones (if you want wings, for example) you can let the next two mutations build up and save your good ones
This is what you get for playing a 20 year old "eternal development(erectile dysfunction)" game.

Cleared spider and shoals like nothing. Ended up getting fulsome fulminade which literally made it ez mode since i got the version of Shoals: 4 where the enemies all tightly packed in small vaults with single doorways. Just opened door, cast fulsome, and then watched the carnage unfold.
Mostly through Vaults now, fought all the extremely powerful uniques and almost died several times because of the uniques.
What is really annoying has been trying to get a good spell for my spell forged servitor. First I used frozen clouds but he would often not cast it on enemies, especially fast ones, because it won't hit itself or me.
Then tried permafrost eruption, that was even worse, he would maybe cast 1 time before the enemy got too close then he just sat there doing nothing.
Now I have him using orb of destruction. This is EXTREMELY effective but also EXTREMELY risky. Its fucking scary!! He shoots the orbs like a fucking machine gun, and he doesn't care about me at all. He aims it at an enemy even if I'm behind them, in a narrow 2x hallway he shot 2 of them at once towards me and I also couldn't blink or move due translocation miscast effect. I had to just tank the hit. I have a amulet of reflect but that isn't guaranteed to save me. It is really fun watching him turn the entire screen into exploding red mist but I'm almost certain it's only a matter of time before he explodes me.
I am so close to crystal spear being castable now. To be fair that can also miss an enemy and hit me, but I think it's less likely for him to friendly fire with crystal spear compared to orb of destruction.

...This has been a known bug for 8 months, on maybe the best melee weapon in the game- Certainly the premier answer for ridiculously high AV enemies, which the lategame is full of. Hate the Qud devs for whatever you want, so long as you hate them for this.

Sometimes the game decides it REALLY wants to kill you and starts pulling shit like that. Feels like borderline cheating. Like a DM who openly despises you and doesn't even try to be subtle. It's especially rough in early game up until the end of both S branches. In newer versions BS/unavoidable deaths occur significantly more frequently.
I haven't looked at the code but I suspect there is some sort of calculation that will trigger in some circumstances and cause the game to throw more high threat situations at you.
For example, twice in the last few games I had "Malevolant Force" trigger 2 and even 3 times in the span of 5 or 6 turns. This leads me to believe it isn't truly random.
There was a pretty sizeable leap in the amount of early game deaths across all games played. This trend started with the introduction of Attacks of Opportunity and has continued ever since. I've seen some of the most talented speedrunners and winning streamers who said they lose far more often in Dungeon and Lair branches than ever before.

Some brands add flat damage. Also some races and mutations get auxiliary attacks that have a % chance to activate on every attack. Short blades are the fastest weapons and have low skill requirements so they are good to activate effects like that.
Plus if you only have to put 10 or 14 levels into your weapon skill, you can still afford to max out other skills. You didn't spend a ton of experience to get a moderately effective weapon.

I sometimes get the urge to play Frog, but the mid to endgame is SUCH a slog. Almost glad I got wrecked.
Most fights later on are: did I get hit by something dangerous? -> use ?phase and_healing. Did the enemy summon? _tele or -teleother. And you're often at risk of getting two-shotted so you can't really relax either. Whew!
Samurai was pretty rad though, got all four books and enjoyed the samurai skills. was thinking of trying "vanilla" angband for a change but I'm fed up with *band gameplay after this nine hour sojourn into Frog

Apparently starting "in the middle of nowhere" placed me on the grounds of the church faction and gave an achievement on turn zero. Kinda weird.
Doing Slime for the first time. My understanding is there's basically no reason to explore the first 4 levels, right? I've been just diving straight down immediately upon finding a stair, only killing enemies in the immediate vicinity of the stairways and giving myself a path down and back up. AFAIK there's no items anywhere in Slime outside of the final vault. I guess the experience I'd get from clearing the entire branch is desirable since I'm close to having a level 9 spell at a good success rate, but the odds of malmutation seem to make it not worth the risk. I actually have equipped one of the few sources of rMut left in modern DCSS, the hat of the alchemist, but that only decreases the odds of getting malmutated, it does not completely prevent it. I already got 1 negative mutation just from being in sight of a shining eye for a single turn so it definitely isn't foolproof.
Thankfully I got the version of wizlab with the flesh walls and abominations where the end vault had 25 mutation potions, so I'm able to make a lot of mutation roulette rolls. Unfortunately I already used a lot of them earlier, so I only have 10 left.
Not sure of branch order at this point either.
I've cleared all of Dungeon, Depths, Lair, S branches, Orc, Elf, Vaults, and Depths. Not sure if it's better to do Zot 1 - 4 first before Slime. Also not sure when I should do Abyss. I'm planning to do extended, I've never survived long in extended. Furthest I've ever progressed was clearing the vestibule of hell, proceeded to get absolutely raped by hell effects

It looks like the you only ever match a side with a 1 to a side with another 1 (do not rotate the tiles)
Take the centerpiece, all 0s, no walls. You wouldn't want to connect half of a wall right up against the border- And you can see all the other sides that are 0 on the other tiles fit without doing that.
I'm fairly sure this is how they're arranged they're doing because of:

Take these 4 picrel and examine how the other tiles would connect to them, or how they can/can't connect to each other.
There are other, more robust implementations of this, I'm sure. This is just something that works for these devs, it just makes sure they're keeping the next tiles wall on the right side. Connecting a 1 to a 2 would put the wall on the north or west instead of south or east.

One issue with this I see is that this can end up creating a disconnected area (take the last 4 pieces in the picture, they create a cavity that cannot be connected to anything else). This means the underlying algorithm has retries, which makes its performance very predictable.
The way they handle this can be generalized to something solvable with the Wave Function Collapse procgen, don't ask me about the name, but that algorithm is its own can of worm.
I like Torchlight 2 and the areas it generates, but this definitely isn't something I can use.

Since it's turn based you're not abusing the enemy's attack animation by darting in and out like Grimrock will let you do- You're just (or you would be) making the enemy follow you to a more advantageous location.
When you step out of their attack range, they have to step to follow you, and that's their action. You do eventually have to stand and deliver or fully exfiltrate (consumable, stairs, etc).
Adding in a telegraphed "MMO" style attack is a specific and somewhat rare design choice; If you're making the player dodge red circles you've decided to let them avoid damage already.
The only combat use case is if you use a higher natural speed (typically hard to get) to get a "double turn" and let the enemy step in to you, hit them and continue kiting (takes a lot of space, abuse is largely solve by semi-randomized energy gain, makes sense if you've invested a in speed) OR if you run in circles around a pillar to let your natural regen refill you- it's great if you're up against a monster that can ALMOST oneshot you. Just fight it on a pillar and play ring around the rosie any time it gets through your dodge. Kind of cheesy, a little pathetic, sure... But a viable tactic, right? Humans are exhaustion predators baby! Let's go, fuck yeah! Rope-a-dope an out-of-depth run-ender, makes sense.
But noooooooo, that's not "realistic" and so now every monster can catch your tailfeathers and gets to attack while chasing you (You can't do the same to enemy types that flee and kite, btw), because run-enders HAVE TO BE RUN-ENDERS

I think most procgens that we have nowadays are massively iterated on- I've seen dozens of changelogs where small tweaks are done to make procgen behave a little bit better once undesirable behavior (like say if you make a horseshoe map by accident too often, by adding a single-tunnel-connection to cavities).
I bet if you get something working you'll have a better idea playing around with generated levels what your implementation needs.

My goal is to create a procgen that treads the ground between the traditional algorithms and the ARPG ones (which are more like chunk combiners) nicely. I'm on my way there but I just remembered about Torchlight 2 having modding tools so I took some time out to check it out.
The issue with procgen I see is that there are often a lot of trade off. Fix up solutions (creating paths in shut-in areas) tend to ruin pretty premade areas. Probabilistic combiners have the issue of being very complex to develop on beyond very basic generation, since additional constraints can result in higher failure/retry rate and unless you never update the game, any change in the generation can have escalating changes with highly undesirable effects. Traditional algorithms are often too simple to create relationships on (such as a basic lock and key dungeon). Using a graph as a base now turns the problem toward planar embedding, which either generates very ugly dungeons or takes forever.
Anyway, I have a sort of personal solution. It's going to be limited to the scope of my game, and it won't try to achieve everything, but just enough in-between to make it work.

Eh I'd say the armor isn't an issue for shapeshitters. They've got lots of other problems, but there are several forms that either give shitloads of AC or else let you wear armor anyway.
The real fuckery is that shapeshitters get like zero gear and dcss is a gear simulator.
The average lategame character is walking around with artefact weapon/armor/shield/hat/boots/gloves/cloak and a shapeshifter is larping as an octopode with only two fingers.
It's defacto the class for weird freak species to unfreak themselves and a shitter trap for everyone else.

I have lost control of my life. My lack of discipline is slowly but steadily causing my world to crumble around me. My surroundings are in a state of disrepair and clutter, my health, sanity, and morality are deteriorating, my hygiene is poor, everything is on a downward spiral and the trajectory I'm on is unsustainable. But for now I am just barely functioning on the most important things to make it from one day to the next such as working and eating and paying the most important expenses to not get evicted. I play roguelikes obsessively I just ignore the problems in my life as the trash literally piles up around me blocking the doorways and smelling horrible the floors are covered in filth, food and dried puddles of cat urine and the legs and ripped up segments of dead spiders and cockroaches, old takeout Chinese bags, and piles of clothes. But I just focus on getting the orb of Zot and everything is okay. Oops I splatted in Vaults: 4, oh no I died in Zot: 1, whoops another stupid death in Swamp: 2. Inventory. Scoreboard. The screen turns dark and briefly I see my reflection looking back at me in the immense silence. My hair is an overgrown mess. I haven't brushed my teeth in days, i havent shaved in weeks. I feel a sudden nagging awareness of the huge mess surrounding the computer desk. Only the low hum of the computer fans and the monotonous squeaking of a ceiling fan penetrate the suffocating silence which engulfs me. "No one at work talks to me anymore", the thought interrupts the comfortable trance and threatens to drag me back to awareness. The main menu appears once more. Perhaps I'll do an octopode ice elementalist this time...

Did another run of JHC, now an Angel of Shotgunnery UV 100% kills one.
The most difficult part of this challenge was actually finishing it with enough bullets to kill the final boss. Shells just stop spawning completely before the last 12 levels and boxes only give you 12 shells every now and then.
This game has a pretty noticeable problem with ammo for some weapons, and I don't think using 3+ levels trying to get Ammo Surplus is a solution to it, seeing how low the amount of ammo dropped by that trait is too.

Disagree. Making turns non-deterministic was, in my estimation, a change that was diametrically opposed to the spirit of Nethack.
If you figured out your current speed and the monster's speed and counted turns to dance out of the way of his attacks, being able to neutralize his threat (so long as it's only 1v1)) was your reward for careful observation and learning the game mechanics. To go in and say "no, that's not fair, let's make it so you get hit anyway" is a "balance" change that makes it more like other games in the genre, and less like itself.
Nethack is (was) all about figuring out how things work and playing cautiously, carefully, and smartly to make Mr. Random Chance have to suck it up. Other games can and should do the "no, that's not fair, we have to nerf it so the player can't escape the RNG" because that's their thing, but it wasn't Nethack's thing, not for the first couple of decades.

Partly why I enjoy games like Tome/Qud more, even though I load up DCSS or IA more often.
When you beat Tome there's zero fucking doubt you built a character to fucking curbstomp the challenge you faced.
If you scrape out a win in Nethack, you're not really sure if /you/ won or if you just got lucky getting over the hump. I think part of it is because Nethack is more checklisty, sorting out blessed gear and dealing with alignments and instant death triggers. When you win it's so formulaic that you can just go "Would I have still won that if I had to deal with X that got removed" or "Am I just crutching on Zin? Is 3 rune a REAL win?"

The whole thing is because it's made from the wrong direction. You should START with a basic set of endings, even if it's just a placeholder character with a textbox that says "Congratulations, you won!" and then go back from there and add more shit in the middle. That way when you peter out or get side tracked it doesn't fuck the whole game.
Instead they went in linear order leaving the game without a purpose for it's entire existence, and when they FINALLY get around to making a few endings it's all on a single linear quest path with massively over written self insert OCs.
Like objectively it would take only a couple hours to write down a list of endings for each faction and a list of tasks to unlock that ending, and then dump them in as barebones questline skeletons.
Then you can take your times swapping out "give me ten bear asses" to something more interesting. Maybe put in basic faction warfare, they've already got reputation, make each faction ending require your to attack other factions or something.

I had CoQ sitting in a folder unattended for a year or two now, it feels like.
Don't think I'll bother giving it a replay, though. Not without major content. Truekin really lets you see most all of the game- I know what it's like to play around with most mutation powers, better than most mutants given that my willpower and ego both were closing in on 40 towards the end.
I've had a chance to sample the different weapons and everything. I really do just only wish that the last third or so of the game hadn't felt like chewing paper.
Fuck do I play next, tho? Can't imagine anything hits the same after that; For all its faults it's probably the most immersive roguelike to ever exist. What do you do after that? Maybe the TOME expansions, I guess? Only ever beat the main campaign, may as well yeah?

Probably now is a good time since you're already powerful enough, but you really shouldn't go farther than floor 3 unless you're a war god because you're gonna get quickly surrounded permanently by a mob from floor 4 onwards.
You might want to clear the vestibule of hell or the crypts if you want to have full piety to find the rune more easily, but that's probably not needed.

Mutations and cybernetics can boost your strength. I think strength requirements are reduced a point or two with higher skill, but that might have been a mod?
If you've got a lot of dex you may want firearms or other dex-based ranged weapons. Also strength is only melee damage with default combat, there are martial arts that tie damage to dex or even int, though if you're playing DDA those may have been removed for being too fun.

Probably Tome. Nevermind that they push the "soft permadeath" (Start with 2-3 extra lives, gain an extra one every... Prime number?) mode as default, or the easily acquirable extra lives even in roguelike mode (you can score 2, 3 with some finagling).
Most all of the information is plainly presented to the player and, beyond that, none of the monsters are ever... Creative? Or like... Dangerous outside of how well they bump or if they apply a few commonly dangerous effects.
Other roguelikes will steal your items and destroy them and burn you through the floor while getting digested by an ooze, send invisible nasties at you, execute powerful spells with complex effects, and so on
Tome4? Look out, that guy's got a 100% damage reflect shield on 2/3rds of the time and 20x your health. He can stun you every 10 turns, hope you found a 9 turn or less stun cleanse by now.

You can get really far just by investing everything in a sword summoner and/or cooldown ring, but actually winning like that is hard. Might want to check the wiki to figure out the optimal scroll use between those items.

Alright, so at some point a shortbow moved from minimum-strength 4 to 8, and the answer here is that I use a selfbow in order to avoid throwing this character away.
Unfortunatly, a selfbow with field or even crude arrows will simply reflect off the hide of a zombie, meaning I require higher-level ammunition in order to start as an archer.
Sure, I COULD use pistols with bullets to kill every zombie, but at that point I will have trained up my gun skills and used guns to clear the whole early game only to switch over to a bow and pretend I'm a bow man. Reaching the late game IS most of the game.
Bionics require... seems like they require more than they used to, though I'll still be praying for the eventual +2 strength. Mutations are unreliable by nature and require late game material to manipulate intentionally.
Meanwhile, I'm just trying to get access to the town's resources so I can start crafting stuff at all and secure water.
I've run out of wood splinters from the benches in the evac shelter, and run out of clean water. Any electric answer to the water issue requires clearing the town first, even praying for water tablets.
water+food+better arrows is the goal, and that requires survival skill+fabrication+archery for the arrows.
A pit clears town for easy zombies, and a digging stick is easy to make from a stick, but it turns out it just makes shallow pits, which don't do damage. A wood shovel requires wood-chiselling 1 to craft. A stone chissel needs gravel, and also 17 hours of work to craft. That and the shovel is 24 hours of crafting, at which point I will be dying of thirst.
I foraged for food. It's spring. The items I got need cooking-quality 3 to prepare, and my cast iron frying pan isn't enough for that. A clay canning pot required clay, but also requires fire to make, so it is fire-locked and holes are time-locked which requires water so I can get more time and therefore is fire-locked.

Archery is very much skill dependent to do damage. Archers form proficiency drops strength requirements and is necessary, similarity you need to have proficiency in the enemy. Principles of biology and all its related proficiency is a requirement to do damage with any bow, since bows damage was nerfed into the ground with the idea that they get an 8x crit dmg multiplier for hitting weaknesses or a "good hit" compared to guns getting a 2x crit dmg multiplier.
It was designed to be dogshit unless you create a character already good at it.
I'm tempted to ask about the gameplay differences between DDA/BN (besides le furry troon pills)
But I'm also very scared now.

Big one for me is that melee combat in BN is still viable and fun. It was my favorite part of Cataclysm: DDA until the Realism Brigade nerfed it into nigh uselessness. You had a huge number of different martial arts and weapons you could use, making for fun and varied combat, and then they ripped out a bunch of the martial arts, nerfed others, made enemy armor stronger, gave you an exhaustion mechanic so your fighting ability tanks rapidly, and made enemy grab attempts practically a death sentence, so you just shouldn't do melee in DDA anymore.
Bright Nights doesn't hate fun, so over there it's still a great option. And there's stuff all across the board like that, where DDA took out something that was interesting or fun or well-liked and replaced it with something dull or samey or tedious and grindy.

I played it to try it out. I posted about it here too, if I remember right. The game is basically, just an inferior, more random version of ADoM without the german autism. And ADoM, all things considered, already fucking sucks.
There's no information, so you're playing it like an oldstyle roguelike. But unlike an oldstyle roguelike, it doesn't really have 30 years of autism behind it.
I did both a bit of the dungeon at the bottom right corner of isen dun and the grave, and for some reason the blacksmith gave me an artifact hammer so I started using that. Later on I realized that I could trade it with the crone to get literacy, because I couldn't read.
I was just bashing everyone's head in murderhobo style maxing out combat, detection and carrying.
Then I just wandered in the absolutely gigantic and empty overmap for half an hour.
Apparently I had killed enough unique monsters (which I imagine were all the named @s in the dungeon SW of the fishing village) by going down trying to understand if I was meant to reach -1000', that when I stumbled upon the charred village in the middle of the sea and talked to the only NPC he gave me Bloodsinger, which at least in theory sounded like a better weapon than Ironsword, the sword I got by clearing a vault full of high DL enemies that is just one step away from the starting town.
Wandered some more before finding the minotaur cavern. I wiped the floor with everyone there but some sort of nether bolt sorcerer/lich ended up petrifying me. Potions did nothing, died.
later on I found a 5 year old guide to the game that explained that if you go in a specific small island and do a specific quest, you can endgame weapon at like, XL3 and steamroll the game with it. Also all the villages are empty placeholder full of nothing, and you're not meant to know that.
My winner stumbled upon the 1 level deep engame dungeon by accident and killed the BBEG without knowing.
Everything's all over the place and WIP. It's bad.

I'm having an issue with blood loss causing anemia and therefore tiredness. This basically lost me a day, but did not let me sleep for 24 hours in a row. I simply was still tired when I woke up.
So, you may have a medical condition, which you can see by pressing "N". I suspect your iron is low, but I don't know if that health concern is implemented. If this were real life, I would suspect that the car noise and vibrations were making your rest worse, and so it is possible that some punishment for sleeping near noise is causing your sleep to yield net-zero restfullness, but I again don't actually know if something like that is implemented. Parasites may also steal your health and energy.
Regardless of what the issue is, you may be letting it get worse while sleeping, and so you may need to solve it before the game will let you actually get restful sleep.

While I'd stay away from it just the same, steam review is not anymore useful than any modern review system.
Recently I played a game there and the top reviews (at the time was) were
>a chatgpt post (with all the emdash) and hallucinated information about the game

>posts from people with like 1-2h telling people not to trust the negative reviews
Occasionally I see some attempts at writing a helpful review where the writer tries to come up with an average by rating the graphic, music and gameplay and ... let's just say I prefer lobotomy to acknowledging those kinds of posts.

I've started using emdashes a lot in my writing after seeing schizos like ^^
I tried out current DCSS after not playing since .19 to try out shapeshifters but went with Djinni for my first game and IMO they way overdid the "Spells shouldn't be basic, they should have gimmicks" part. Maybe it's just me but the Fire Elementalist start feels worse than old one, you don't have 1 straightforward spell all are gimmicky. This was true for some other spells I got too
I haven't tested shapeshifting yet so idk if equipping multiple medals is possible but the way all medals show which part they meld makes me think it might be in the future. Would be interesting if they end up like Igor from Frog, I thought they were disappointing
I've stopped playing at Lair 4, I'll continue some other time but so far IMO old versions were better, even Djinni's gimmick which is great disappointed me because of spells

Conjurer is the closest to direct basic spells, and even it's a little janky.
You've got magic dart that's just a single target blast, searing ray which is a multi turn line, prism which is a relayed explosion, and blast which is a close range knockback.
Flame elementalist is just the "get rF or blow yourself up" class, everything is straightforward and easy to use if you're not afraid of killing yourself by accident.

Amazingly they made half the shapeshifting forms gimmicky too because that's just what the devs do. Hope you enjoy swapping places with your orb to heal it and attacking multiple times to charge up an AoE attack that is centered on your orb not you.

This has to be the worst unrand I've ever seen, but I guess you could actually make good use of it to clear the Lair. I think I remember reading the devs wanted to start making these kind of shit unrands dropping at the early game so you can drop them once you find something actually useful.
