Big one is cost, currently the only option they have is 64gb cards which are around $13-$16 per which for a lot of companies is too much, smaller models are coming but with how supply chains are being fucking squeezed it’s gonna be slow.
Second is related to how the market works with younger people, a study was done where Nintendo platform games are the most gifted games, and that people would rather get a physical case and card as a gift over a digital card. This way they can be on shelves for that reason and allow other devs who normally wouldn’t be on store shelves to be there too
Finally read/write speeds is major one. Switch 2 has a maximum read/write speed of about 1200mbs, the MicroSD EX has a max speed of about 1000mbps with a lower end of 600mbps, and the Switch 2 cards have a speed of 400mbps.
According to a dev at Ubisoft the price of the card was never an issue, it was the speed, their game could not run of the card due to the slow speeds of it since the game was made for SSDs.

It does seem to evoke that feeling in people. Maybe that was the goal all along. I don't mind the gameplay, but for me the narrative and character changes compared to the original demonstrate a complete misunderstanding by the developers about what made FFVII memorable and what the story even is in the first place or how the characters act within it. It's hard to know if the devs are leaving "clues" with their changes or if they themselves are just clueless.

Only a fraction can fit here, there's a lot more I could say.

Overworld lighting during the daytime is just awful. Unreal Engine 4 has many, many visual shortcomings that make the game look straight up "bad" way too often. Whether it's terrible TAA and ghosting on the PS5 version or it's the lack of scale to the draw distance in the massive environment causing insane levels of pop in and very low quality shadow draw distance.....lots of visual shortcomings really keeps the artstyle from flourishing the way that it should.

Consistency and quality of NPC character models is downright atrocious. VII Remake had better, more varied NPCs that were in line with their environment of the slums of Midgar and the top plate. They had a mid century aesthetic to them as well, with most of them being somewhat retro in their style. Not so in Rebirth. Everyone in Rebirth is a trendy modern day yuppy. There are gay negroes everywhere in the backgrounds of towns, there are copy pasted generic race swapped NPCs everywhere. There are legitimate cases of NPC's who have had their heads swapped to be Black while their hands and body remains White. Some sort of DEI imperative forcing them to have 50% representation in every single area of the game. It's extremely jarring to see Black people with WHITE hands.

The game is perhaps "too developed" much like Remake was before it. You could cut at least 25% of the game out of the game and it would be better off for it. I enjoy variety of interactivity, but sometimes there's just too fucking much overdesigned shit. Chocobo catching is bad, and downright agony on a second playthrough. It's like a dedication to maximalist "game design" that puts a new mechanic in all the time when it's not necessary at all. So many things could have been straight up cutscenes or repackaged or taken out entirely, like the tower/lifespring/summon crystal and Chadley intel spam.

I filled up almost 2000 characters. If you want me to keep writing more, I can write more about many other things too.

Game is way too long, many setpieces are over indulgent in their run time. The ending of the game is almost incomprehensible in real time with things happening extremely quickly and it requires manual review. The feeling you are left with at the end when it comes to Aerith is akin to phantom limb pain, rather than some sort of all encompassing grief. I respect this and I do enjoy it, but it's not what I wanted in the moment. I thought I was going to get punched in the gut because they were killing her again, but it is more complicated than that, and so the emotional send off that I was expecting did not come to pass.

I genuinely enjoy the story so far, though I think the Zack portions are....next to pointless. I was very invested at first because once again I assumed it would be more impactful than it was, but I'm a bit disillusioned with Zack at the moment heading into part 3. They had every opportunity to knock it out of the park with playable Zack portions, but it's only at the beginning and end of the game, and there's next to zero developments the entire way. It's fun to chew on some of the ideas they are pushing with the doomed worlds or whatever.....but it's just not what I was expecting when I saw Zack walking Cloud back to Midgar. I thought we would get an "A/B" timeline sort of scenario. I was looking forward to seeing Zack/Cloud/Aerith interactions in gameplay for a small slice of the game, but that wasn't there either. A lot of this is my own expectations not being fulfilled, and so I can't hold it against the game THAT much.

These are just my personal grievances. I've got more, if you want to see it. Rebirth is still a really great game.

I played VIII when I was maybe like 11 or 12, and I didn't have any trouble understanding the Junction system. Even if a person didn't understand it, you just press a couple buttons and are able to then see what it does yourself.
