It's still my most-favorite IP from Compa, even moreso than Neps. It is a great thrill ride if you are going in completely blind. As the first two games have been out for a while, it's easy to run into spoilers, but back when I played it for the first time, the story was of something that kept me going and constantly wondering what will happen next. Lots of choices and decisions to make throughout the story that will result in instant Game Overs (hence the "Death End" in the title) but it's not annoyingly implemented; you can save at any time during the VN segments (except right after a boss fight or if you're locked into a Death End) so you can get right back to where you were. Some of the Death Ends are raw and brutal, depending on your tolerance. I still remember the two-day PTSD I got from the Spiders ending.

The gameplay is a little rough, not bad, but it has its moments like most Compile Heart games where it will filter players who don't stick with it or learn the mechanics. The first real dungeon is actually a filter in itself for how non-linear the required path to take is, but if you can make it past that, then nothing else in the game should frustrate you.

I guess I'm playing DERQ then. Might be a refreshing experience from all the zoomer slop and gacha slop.

I am. That advice is good, by the way. Stick with it, 2 is meant to be played first if you haven't played the original (Vita) Nightmares.
2 is an alternate timeline. Cinderella is a loli there because before the main story started, an incident caused by a (possible) misunderstanding caused her to enter Blood Skelter and leave the Dawn to wander the Jail. She remains in Blood Skelter for like a decade or more before the part finds and rescues her, and as you find out, Blood Skelter halts the normal aging process, so she never developed over all those years. This becomes even more relevant later as it also prevents corpses from decomposing. In Nightmares/Finale, this doesn't happen to her and she develops normally into an adult.
Also, if you like (you) pandering, Nightmares and Finale will be a treat to you as it is much more prominent there, being elevated to quasi dating sim mechanics. There's even two side VNs that completely focus on romancing the Blood Maidens as Jack, and True End even lets you marry the Skelter of your choice (of the original 10).

You can play the original game that is on steam/VITA if you want, the story is the same up until you beat the final boss. The original was remade because it had fuck huge maps filled with nothing, so they decreased the size of the maps in the remake and tweaked some game play stuff. If you do decide to play the original the remake has a little quiz that if you answer the question correctly it drops you off at the end so you can see the post game stuff they added that ties the game into finale.

It is genuinely worth it playing that way, shockingly Compa planned it pretty well and it all clicks as you go making Nightmares pretty satisfying.
Gameplay wise it's the only dungeon crawler I've ever played but I thought it was decently fun. Plenty of party members to experiment with and stuff, difficulty is adjustable too.

Finally passed the next chapter and saved Lily. The Glitch Girls all hate each other and fight to settle their differences. Hot.

Tow chapters in so far, this game is being difficult to swallow. The unpredictability of the RNG-based everything, from the randomly generated dungeons to the placement of enemies, traps and necessary items, it's a slog to go through. Even for me being a big fan of DERQ as a whole and enjoying all the interactions between the characters, new and old, this game is quite annoying when it comes to the actual gameplay. No amount of skill or strategy is going to save you, just get lucky that you get all you need en route to your objective, then you have to actually get OUT of the dungeon, even if you have to go down all the various floors to find an exit, hoping one of the Glitch Girls don't destroy the nearest one.

Thank goodness Normal difficulty is a thing, which keeps all your progression intact, that being experience and levels, currency and any acquired items. Plus your Death Ends accumulate for points you can spend on permanent buffs, annoying as it is to keep dying in order to strengthen your character. Not a fan of that, especially since there's so many factors that can work against you to accelerate death.

Not a surprised to see the mixed reception and Meh/Bad reviews the game has received. We'll see if I don't become ironic and hack a Cheat Engine table, or just look up a playthrough, to see the end of the game.

This is almost all roguelike/roguelite games, and probably the single biggest reason why I hate them. Even Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, as lenient as it is, can still fuck you over for no reason and then you lose everything you had, no way to get it back other than the same way you got it the first time. Omega Labyrinth Life has a system called GPS Straps where you pay a small fee to attach them to your equipment and if they're lost from you dying in a dungeon, they appear at the shop for you to buy them back. Even then, depending on how high-level your equipment was, it can be ridiculously expensive, and there are ways that enemies can destroy your equipment that prevent you from getting it back via GPS Straps. And all of these games tend to have absolutely fucktarded 99-floor postgame dungeons that start you at level 1 with no items or equipment and you're just expected to pray that RNG blesses you with good items and doesn't fuck you over to get through, and if not, there goes hours of playtime for nothing. If I could go back in time, I'd fucking strangle the retard who made Rogue for starting this shit.

Additionally there were plenty of Ether Codes this time so my Sanity gauge was kept in check.
