There's no general consensus among Trails fans about what the best arc is. Cold Steel definitely gets a lot of flak, especially from old school purists who hate change, but it's also the most popular arc by far. For me personally it's up there with the rest of them, with CS4 and Reverie both being in my top 3.

I think part of the reason he was easy for me is because I had a ridiculous amount of speed on all my characters, I think Schera was at like 155. In the OG games you don't have enough gear options to hit anywhere near that so Loewe takes a lot more turns, but in the remake I was able to spam like 4-5 casts before he could get a turn. Speed and evasion make a massive difference, but it's definitely more rewarding to beat him the old fashioned way.

"Old-fashioned way" referring to no evasion and slogging it through Loewe taking tons of actions due to his speed advantage. Evasion wasn't exploitable until Crossbell, and while Earth Wall is very strong, it's nowhere near as broken as evasion tanking which trivializes most of the future games. You also had to spam clock up/EX and clock down a lot in FC/SC (especially for fights like Mueller), but after SC the gear options get way better and you can just roll into every fight with tons of speed without having to manage it.

But the Problem is Liberl is the most detached setting in the Trails Franchise (or should i say, they detached it themselves by having a jumping to a modern setting Zero Onwards). First Falcom have to:

Sigmund and Mariabelle aren't that hard, Mariabelle just requires a lot of patience and Sigmund is just art spam with bells. If you didn't get the wind or fire bell then yes Sigmund is very challenging but you should get at least one of those beforehand if you're doing Nightmare.
Agree on 3rd though I keep forgetting Richard just totally invalidates the back half of that game. It's been a while since I played it.
I still think Abyss Reverie should be #2 because the early-mid game in Reverie is brutal, the Matteus fight requires so much luck even if you do what little evasion stacking you can at that point in the game. It's not until after you start getting tier 2 bells that the game becomes significantly easier (I think that's around the time you beat the Emperor, so chapter 3 if memory serves).
The thing about Ao is that the game is so well-balanced even on Nightmare and actually forces you to mix up your strategies, but because of that, none of the fights feel truly unfair like Matteus or SC Prologue. So that's why I can't put it above Reverie in terms of difficulty, but it is my favorite Nightmare mode to play.

The secret is using Lone Blade and Fury. Put Lone Blade on your physical characters and Fury on your offensive mage. Against the senior bracer fight, you would want to immediately have someone cast earth wall thrn have estelle use morale. You want to chip them with something like Diamond Dust while delaying them with Flicker. Zin can use taunt while equipped with Secret Aroma then use Disable when their stun bar is near full. Only spam S Crafts when you know its either going to stun or kill atleast 2 of them. GET RID OF KURT ASAP otherwise youre never going to put a dent on their life totals. The Reverie fight is fucking dumb because of that. 1M HP then you get destroyed because Revwrie summons 4 adds while in rage.
