Should be. For example there's little a properly built, pure Eldritch Knight couldn't handle. Often times solo builds not only are OC but also fine-tuned for the play style though. This usually means embracing stealth to generate momentum and gain more control over situations. This is the tricky part with Fighters. But again, if you're familiar with the game and don't insist on playing on Honour you shouldn't find yourself soft-locked anywhere. Solo also gives you some new content, like seeing how potential companions fare without your involvement. I'll be a tough journey (especially as non-resisting Durge is often labelled as murderhobo) but could be a rewarding one if you can embrace the challenge. This is not for first-time players nor the faint of heart.

Optimally you should start with BG1 and work your way through the trilogy. It's a great low-level adventure that tends to be underrated as it lives in the shadow of a genre classic. If you need a more practical consideration playing the series in release order is recommended as it'll be hard to go back once you experienced the improvements in the sequel.

I was going to recommend Warlock just as >>543994135 said. At it's core it's all about Booming Blade in melee and Eldritch Blast in ranged. Those are all cantrips, so you can spam them all you want. The two Eldritch Invocations that's empowers your Blast is highly recommended, Devil's Sight is also great (especially if you play a race without Darkvision and/or plan to use the Darkness spell) and I also love the one that grants you free Mage Armour. There will be a fantastic robe in Act 2 (only available if you sided with the Grove/Tieflings in Act 1) that alone worth going without armor. Pact Weapon ensures you'll land hits often and your spells are more about crowd control (like the magnificent Hunger of Hadar) and they often occupy the Concentration slot. This, coupled with the fact that you have much less slots than a full caster (even if it recharges on Short Rest) means spellcasting for a Warlock is more about timing and impact. So it's a very flexible yet powerful class whose gameplay loop is simple and fits your needs. The only downside is that the game has a Warlock/Fiend companion already.

No! I played BG1 7 years ago and it was shit. No dialogues with companions after their recruitment. Just some quips when they move or attack. Fallout was released earlier and it was a real RPG. It would be pure garbage in 2025. Didn't even bother with BG2.

In short, you can kiss goodbye to Karlach, Wyll, Halsin and potentially Gale too. Obviously no Tieflings in the future acts either, so any quest they're involved in is gone and same goes for the unique items they might sell. A common criticism with BG3 is that not being a goody two-shoes locks you out of content and the game doesn't support the evil routes with exclusive (or at least alternative) content/NPCs. I recommend saving Minthara for a dedicated evil run as it doesn't tank her Approval. Same goes for Astarion and if you want to round out your party Lae'zel or Dark Justiciar Shart is an option.

This is because Astarion is forced to self-reflect on what freedom is worth to him and what his worth is, consider what kind of eternity he wants for himself once Cazador is dead, and what kind of person he really is. None of these requires love as a catalyst, and entangling himself with Tav risks turning their relationship into an emotional crutch that stifles both his growth and agency. How can he separate "this is what I want for myself" and "I owe this to my dear savior" once a Tav who romances him becomes part of the equation - allows him to bite her on a nightly basis, teaches him to trust again, kills his master for him, becomes the one he owes an eternal debt? None of the other romances have this dependency angle to them. Romance enriches their characters without feeling like a burden. Both unromanced Astarion and romanced Astarion have to wrestle with difficult questions at some point, but the former is free to do so without the weight of feeling like he manipulated someone or was manipulated. Unromanced Astarion doesn't have to bat his eyelashes at Tav or start another coy request with "Darling..." He would have nothing to offer. He would have nothing to bargain, plea, or promise. He would have nothing to owe. His independence would be the first step of his liberation. The sister will argue that romance is an important part of his healing process (missionary with him over his grave), and that Tav as a lover helps him confront his trauma, and that it is beautiful and poignant that way. Maybe she's right. Or maybe his trauma is a different matter altogether, and he can only truly start to face it, on his own terms, once he has earned his freedom. You're already answering your question, but there are ways to differentiate two Clerics even beyond picking a different domain. For a duo, you might assign the role of healer/protector to one (this fits the Selûnite better) and striker/frontliner to the other. The first one can be either Life or Light domain and support their allies with Bless, Warding Flare, Warding Bond, and spells like Guardian of Faith that can soak up damage. This doesn't require any special gear, although the adamantine splint and healing-based items obviously pair well with Life. The other (Shadowheart) can be of any domain and just equip the Luminous set (https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Luminous_set) to focus on damage with Spirit Guardians, damage spells, and even melee strikes.

Lae'zel is not strictly necessary for those story beats, but the original question was whether missing a companion can result in the story feeling incomplete. You don't need Lae'zel for the crèche, but narratively, she's the reason you would even go there in the first place. In the time of races meaning shit for stats it was a STR/CHA option but even on the tabletop they had to basically revise the race to have subraces in a later splatbook and 2024 returned to one unified race but buffed the hell out of it. Also iirc larian actually nerfed the breath weapon. That said race barely matters in BG3 anyway so might as well look cool doing it. Like I don't play halflings because of halfling luck, I play em because short races are inherently funny doubly so if they're trying to look cool with martial arts or other fancy fighting styles

It's still a wizard so strong last I checked but the gish elements help a fair bit. Last coop run I did was a bladesinger, hexblade, and arcane archer(Me) all of us chose to be monoclass. The bladesinger was pulling more than enough weight with me the AA usually being the least vital factor in our combat wins

It's not like you're always going to have the right elixir prepared, and even if you did you could have something that actually improves your ability to fight instead. That said unless it's a fire, acid, or poison one I doubt it will have paid off much over the course of the game.
Even in the tabletop it was a shit race though. There's basically an extremely small window in terms of character level where the breath attack isn't a waste of a race feature.
