Can I have a push in the right direction please, this fight is impossible. I've already killed the other 2, I think I was supposed to lure them away/near the grove to make it easy, but ended up just fighting the Drow and having someone appear and kill the priestess. His little band of goblins are somehow hitting me for insane damage from the ground. I only have Shadowheart and Orc lady atm. I left Haslin because I don't want to fight the entire area if I can avoid it. I'm planning on using him for the windmill fight, that's another one where I have no chance. Yes, that would be it. All the major fights in Act 1 can pose a challenge before you get your first feat at level 4. Also, you make it sound like you're fighting him with 3 party members. You don't have anyone else? That's a bit odd and would definitely make things harder. If you aren't adverse to cheesing, try blowing him up with the various smokepowder barrels in the goblin camp. There's a cache of them behind the midget trader "Roah Moonglow" towards the entrance.

Random thoughts about the Moonrise Assault and beyond. Unsorted spoilers ahead obviously.

- Two party approach FTW. 3 companions for the surface, another 3 for down below. Varied, fun, refreshing. It felt like a true team effort.
- Prone from our Ice didn't trigger the Harpers, making it an excellent tardwrangler.
- Sleet Storn is underrated. Perfect Ice surface creator for those w/o access to Ray of Frost (Halsin) and it bothers enemy casters.
- Ice Arrow works with the 4.5 Cold AoE ring. Bloodlust Astarion was enough to keep most Harpers at bay.
- Dryad was an MVP candidate. Free Spike Growth re-cast at every turn is a Swiss Army knife. Just keep her away from trouble.
- Enemies seem to fear spikes. At least Absolute Paladins wasted turns b/c of it.
- Gnolls feed on corpses if they miraculously survive the battle.
- Ice doesn't count as Difficult Terrain. Test run for Force Conduit Lae'zel delayed.
- Lann Tarv fighting means free Dwarven Splintmail, Halberd of Vigilance and Enraging Heart Garb. That's 3360G (base price) you don't need to spend.
- Jaheira comes with only 5 spells but 12 slots. Letting the AI control her is a huge waste.
- Blessing of Selune (Resistance to magical Necro) meant surprisngly little.
- Disarmed Ketheric still wields a Warhammer in cutscenes but switches to a Myrkul Flail (and drops it on his death) in the 2nd phase.
- Big K's Achilles' heel must be Ice (surface) from a high Spell DC caster. He's like a... pig on ice?!
- Resonance Stone felt like a noob trap there. Psychic vulnerability in a Mind Flayer colony? C'mon now.
- Mind-Archive Interface was a 5 star idea. Right in the feels!
- Aylin's AI is like a puppy who think she's a direwolf when not distracted by a dandelion.
- The best post-assault dialogue belongs to Art.

Despite the flaws, I think bg3 does qualify. It was made by sincere and talented people who just wanted to make a fun game. We can nitpick various flaws all day, but it does meet those fundamental qualifications.

A few other games that come to mind that meet those qualifications are bg1, bg2, planescape torment, deus ex 1, and vtm:bloodlines.

However, it's easy to just list the best games ever made that have already stood the test of time, so to name a few contemporary games that were made by sincere and talented people that just wanted to make a fun/good game that I think will stand the test of time in the future, Expedition 33 comes to mind.

I think the single most important aspect of this is the sincerity part. So many young people are afraid of sincerity. You see it all the time, in how they behave, and what they create. If you're sincere about something, that opens you up to criticism. But if everything you do is ironic, then you can just say "you didn't get it, it was ironic" if someone criticizes your work. Someone who is actually sincere and passionate stands out these days.

There's a second layer to sincerity too. Corporate lawyer mandated policies, focus group determined decision making, MBA's involved in the large scale decision making process of an artistic endeavor, and other such modern day industry issues are examples of things that lead to an insincere product. This is why I like to mention Ex33, because that game is the result of a group of Ubisoft (one of the worst companies about that list of things) devs getting fed up with that process and striking out on their own, where a small group of 30 people had complete creative control from start to finish, brainstorming to publication. That is sincerity.

Sincerity is so important. Even if someone isn't talented or intelligent, if they're sincere, they will at least make art. Ubisoft and other megacorps don't make art anymore.

I forgot to post this. 4 Harpers, 3 Gnolls, 1 Absolute Zealot. The 4 Iron Fist on the right stood back in the Prison, so while they were included on the action queue the game just auto-skipped their turns. That Absolutist was the last enemy alive and out of curiosity I wanted to see how long it takes for our allies to kill him. I shit you not: all 7 of them Missed then one Harper got smitten to death by the Paladin. This shit was the reason I turned the Main Hall into an ice skating ring at the start of the battle. Long story short they were only able to finish that badly outnumbered Zealot at 40% HP during their 4th attempt, and I had to soften him up with a sneaky Bone Chill first. I was aware of the numbers (and the bugs) behind friends and foes but this level of incompetence greatly surprised me. You can chalk it up to a streak of bad rolls but this shit was criminal.

Other than hex to make eldritch blast slightly better or counter spell to just be useful in general, there's not a lot that make a huge difference. Hellfire rebuke is fun at lower levels, but not really worth a slot at higher ones
Darkness and Hunger of Hadar are both extremely useful for slightly different reasons with that darkvision invocation
Create undead is probably the best mystic arcanum since you'll actually bother using it in a fight and it doesn't take turns away from eldritch blasting
Otherwise it doesn't really matter. In theory control spells with a variety of different saves would be the best choices leveling up, but you may as well just pick utility shit outside of those

A Warlock primarily casts Concentration CC spells (Hunger of Hadar, Darkness, Confusion, Hold Person/Monster etc.) for me. He also serves as another source for Counterspell and has Fire-based DD spells that he only casts if it can truly turn the tides of the battle. Honestly a lot depends on if I'm using the Warlock next to a full caster with actual spell slots, or in pair with a half-caster as an alternative for that full caster.

As long as you don't have hefty expectations sure. Rogue as a class is underwhelming compared to the alternatives but it still have useful aspects. AT is just like that. The core issue is that it only gets Magical Ambush at level 9 and you're pretty much restricted to self-casting before that. By the time you actually reach MA you'll have enough equipment to maximize your spell DC one way or another, too bad all this only come together by the last third of Act 2. So just adjust your expectations and you'll be okay.

Now that the Transmog and Spelltheft mod is on console, I've been testing out different characters on companions. And I must say, having Astarion look like Dragonborn Durge feels quite fitting. While the mouth barely opens for animations, it makes him feel more powerful and threatning. Mostly because he's a Dragonborn vampire. Also, it allows me to technically have Durge as a party member, so it feels like a win!

As an aside, now I'm thinking of using the custom companion mod as a Durge, to make two companions as aides during his time among the Absolute. One to represent Bane, and the other Myrkul. I'm thinking of making one of them Arthas to represent Myrkul, but I'm stuck between either Tav or Alfira for Bane. Mostly because I really want Alfira as a companion.

I wouldn't consider going completely without a weapon until later in the game anyway. Until you get those boots from the Githyanki ambush between acts 2 and 3 you're basically just as well off with a weapon with the flawed helldusk gloves.

A lot of these characters grow on you. They aren't necessarily meant to come across as likable when you first meet them. Gale, for example, is written to be your insufferable know-it-all wizard, but eventually learns to let go of some of that attitude. It might not always work - Astarion will probably test your patience the most - and it's entirely fine if you don't have the patience for any of them, but they are more than what they appear to be at first.

Just give them time and remember to converse them on the regular. You don't necessarily have to exhaust every options at once. I tend to do this in the camp before Long Rests as developments in the story or finishing certain quests might give them new materials to talk about. Be aware that Open Hand Monk with TB and STR Elixir is straight up broken. The said Elixir circumvents the whole thing and catapults you into the top tier without any sacrifices (as relying on it means you can just dump STR at char creation). TB is probably the game's most OP Feat to begin with but this is just the perfect storm for EZ mode.

That being said DEX Monk is powerful on it's own. It's just nobody plays it due to the combination above. OTOH is definitely the best Monk subclass but that doesn't mean the others are weak. Shadow is a steady #2 and it gives you a new approach (though you'll likely use Stealth with any Monk in different capabilities as it just makes sense, Shadow elevates it to another level) and we have sporadic Elemental Monk lovers here and there but it's mostly a niche thing. Drunken Master is a disappointment altogether unless you're an avid Jackie Chan fan.

I would argue that Minthara is a little hypocritical, but not inconsistent. The idea of Minthara caring more for either Shadowheart or Lae'zel, which might explain the perceived inconsistency, feels a little off. The way I see it, what she disapproves of isn't necessarily Lae'zel's renouncing of her lich queen - the similarity to her renouncing of Lolth would be immediately apparent - but openly defying Vlaakith and essentially throwing oil on the fire, inviting danger. It's the recklessness of it that she calls childish, not the admirable idea of going against a (would-be) goddess. Drow are ruthless like gith but also no strangers to subterfuge and deception like Sharrans, so it's amusing to me that Minthara has a bit of Lae'zel and Shadowheart in her.

Isn't that the point? While we have meta knowledge that no Sharran assassins will attack us in game, Minthara can't see into the future. Pissing off one of the most powerful and petty gods in the pantheon seems unwise. Attacking her cloister in Baldur's Gate seems even more unwise. Shar loves to hold grudges and she can hold one for an eternity.

It truly does highlight her hypocrisy when she reacts to Lae'zel. Shar is undoubtedly a worse enemy to have in comparison to Vlaakith.

I really loved playing as Seldarine Drow (Faerie Fire goes brrr), Spore Druid/Way of the four elements Monk .Extra attacks+Symbiotic Entity for that sweet extra necrotic damage, Halo of Spores as reaction; plus, you will take control of the battlefield with lots of mobility, AoE spells like Cloudkill, ranged spell attacks, being able to raise corpses as Fungal Zombies; speak with animals its just a fun spell to have, and you can become a healer too if your party needs it.
