It's annoying because Sonic 2 actually put in the effort of explaining how Robotnik managed to return after getting sent to Mushroom Hell Zone in the first movie, and it honestly reminded me of the first Iron Man movie where Tony builds the suit and the reactor with nothing but some scraps, it was cool.

The games have a scoring system and they are designed for you to get high scores. They are designed for you to complete the acts quickly while keeping your Rings, which rewards you with time bonuses and ring bonuses that add to your score. The things you mentioned are things I have thought about or even brought up in previous threads: they are flaws with how the games are designed. I still think the games are fun, but those are huge game design problems that classicfags ignore. Sonic Adventure 2 fixed the broken scoring system of the classics. The classics are designed for you to get good scores, but do nothing to incentivize it. The scoring system is badly designed and as a result most players don't engage with the level design. When I brought this up, an anon completely changed the subject to the modern games having "handholding", whatever that means.

It isn't. Nuzlocke is a made up challenge. Getting high scores was intended by the developers, and the level layouts are designed around that. The reason you even get time bonuses at all is because the game is rewarding you for being fast, which is done by finding the fastest path through the stage and executing it properly. This is the intended experience by the developers, and the fact that it completely misses so many people is proof that it is badly designed in some aspects. This is why the ranking system introduced in SA2 is better, as it makes it clear that you are supposed to pay attention to the score, and explicitly rewards you for it.
